For many years, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has collected land use data throughout the state and used this information to develop water use estimates for statewide and regional planning efforts, including water use projections, water use efficiency evaluation, groundwater model development, and water transfers. These data are essential for regional analysis and decision making, which has become increasingly important as DWR and other state agencies seek to address resource management issues, regulatory compliance issues, environmental impacts, ecosystem services, urban and economic development, and other issues. Increased availability of digital satellite imagery, aerial photography and new analytical tools make remote sensing based land use surveys possible at a field scale that is comparable to that of DWR’s historical on the ground field surveys. Current technologies allow accurate, large-scale crop and land use identification to be performed at desired time increments, and make possible more frequent and comprehensive statewide land use information. Responding to this need, DWR sought expertise and support for identifying crop types and other land uses and quantifying crop acreages statewide using remotely sensed imagery and associated analytical techniques. Currently, Statewide Crop Maps are available for the Water Years 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and PROVISIONALLY for 2022. December 6, 2023 (Final DWR Data) The 2018 Legislation required DWR to provide or otherwise identify data regarding the unique local conditions to support the calculation of an urban water use objective (CWC 10609. (b)(2) (C)). The urban water use objective (UWUO) is an estimate of aggregate efficient water use for the previous year based on adopted water use efficiency standards and local service area characteristics for that year. UWUO is calculated as the sum of efficient indoor residential water use, efficient outdoor residential water use, efficient outdoor irrigation of landscape areas with dedicated irrigation meter for Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional (CII) water use, efficient water losses, and an estimated water use in accordance with variances, as appropriate. The datasets provided in the links below enable urban retail water suppliers calculate efficient outdoor water uses (both residential and CII), agricultural variances, variances for significant uses of water for dust control for horse corals, and temporary provisions for water use for existing pools (as stated in Water Boards’ draft regulation). DWR will provide technical assistance for estimating the remaining UWUO components, as needed. Data for calculating outdoor water uses include: • Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) – ETo is evaporation plant and soil surface plus transpiration through the leaves of standardized grass surfaces over which weather stations stand. Standardization of the surfaces is required because evapotranspiration (ET) depends on combinations of several factors, making it impractical to take measurements under all sets of conditions. Plant factors, known as crop coefficients (Kc) or landscape coefficients (KL), are used to convert ETo to actual water use by specific crop/plant. The ETo data that DWR provides to urban retail water suppliers for urban water use objective calculation purposes is derived from the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS) program (https://cimis.water.ca.gov/). CIMIS is a network of over 150 automated weather stations throughout the state that measure weather data that are used to estimate ETo. CIMIS also provides daily maps of ETo at 2-km grid using the Spatial CIMIS modeling approach that couples satellite data with point measurements. The ETo data provided below for each urban retail water supplier is an area weighted average value from the Spatial CIMIS ETo. • Effective precipitation (Peff) - Peff is the portion of total precipitation which becomes available for plant growth. Peff is affected by soil type, slope, land cover type, and intensity and duration of rainfall. DWR is using a soil water balance model, known as Cal-SIMETAW, to estimate daily Peff at 4-km grid and an area weighted average value is calculated at the service area level. Cal-SIMETAW is a model that was developed by UC Davis and DWR and it is widely used to quantify agricultural, and to some extent urban, water uses for the publication of DWR’s Water Plan Update. Peff from Cal-SIMETAW is capped at 25% of total precipitation to account for potential uncertainties in its estimation. Daily Peff at each grid point is aggregated to produce weighted average annual or seasonal Peff at the service area level. The total precipitation that Cal-SIMETAW uses to estimate Peff comes from the Parameter-elevation Relationships on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM), which is a climate mapping model developed by the PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University. • Residential Landscape Area Measurement (LAM) – The 2018 Legislation required DWR to provide each urban retail water supplier with data regarding the area of residential irrigable lands in a manner that can reasonably be applied to the standards (CWC 10609.6.(b)). DWR delivered the LAM data to all retail water suppliers, and a tabular summary of selected data types will be provided here. The data summary that is provided in this file contains irrigable-irrigated (II), irrigable-not-irrigated (INI), and not irrigable (NI) irrigation status classes, as well as horse corral areas (HCL_area), agricultural areas (Ag_area), and pool areas (Pool_area) for all retail suppliers.
Excel Application Tool for Agricultural Water Use Data 1998 - 2005 Department of water resources, Water Use Efficiency Branch, Water Use Unit program, has developed an Excel application tool, which calculates annual estimates of irrigated crop area (ICA), crop evapotranspiration (ETc), effective precipitation (Ep), evapotranspiration of applied water (ETaw), consumed fraction (CF), and applied water (AW) for 20 crop categories by combinations of detailed analysis unit and county (DAUCo) over California. The 1998 – 2005 agricultural water use data were developed by all 4 DWR’s Regional Offices (Northern Region Office, North Central Region Office, South Central Region Office, and Southern Region Office) using California Ag Water Use model for updating the information in the California Water Plan Updates-2003 & 2009. Therefore, this current Excel application tool just covers agricultural water use data from the period of 1998 - 2005 water years. It should also be mentioned that there are 2 other similar Excel application tools that cover 2006 - 2010 and 2011 - 2015 agricultural water use data for the California Water plan Updates - 2013 and 2018, respectively. Outputs data provided from this Excel application include ICA in acres, EP, both in unit values (Acre feet per acre) & volume (acre feet), ETc both in unit values (acre feet per acre), & volume (acre feet), ETaw, both in unit value (acre feet per acre), & volume (acre feet), AW, both in unit value (acre feet per acre) & volume (acre feet), CF (in percentage %) for WYs 1998 – 2005 at Detailed Analysis Unit by County (DAUCO), Detailed Analysis Unit (DAU), County, Planning Area (PA), Hydrological Region (HR), and Statewide spatial scales using the dropdown menu. Furthermore, throughout the whole process numerous computations and aggregation equations in various worksheets were included in this Excel application. And for obvious reasons all worksheets in this Excel application are hidden and password protected. So, accidentally they won’t be tampered with or changed/revised. Following are definitions of terminology and listing of 20 crop categories used in this Excel application. Study Area Maps The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) subdivided California into study areas for planning purposes. The largest study areas are the ten hydrologic regions (HR), The next level of delineation is the planning area (PAS), which are composed of multiple detailed analysis units (DAU). The DAUs are often split by county boundaries, so the smallest study areas used by DWR is DAU/County. Many planning studies begin at the Dau or PA level, and the results are aggregated into hydrologic regions for presentation. Irrigated Crop Area (ICA) in acres The total amount of land irrigated for the purpose of growing a crop (includes multi-cropping acres) Multi-cropping (MC) in acres A section of land that has more than one crop grown on it in a year, this included one crop being planted more than once in a season in the same field. Evapotranspiration (ET) Combination of soil evaporation and transpiration is referred to as evapotranspiration or ET. The rate of evapotranspiration from the plant-soil environment is primarily dependent on the energy available from solar radiation but is also dependent on relative humidity, temperature, cloud cover, and wind speed. It is an indication for how much your crops, lawn, garden, and trees need for healthy growth and productivity. Reference Evapotranspiration (ETo) Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is an estimate of the evapotranspiration of a 10-15 cm tall cool season grass and not lacking for water. The daily Standardized Reference Evapotranspiration for short canopies is calculated using the Penman-Monteith (PM) equation (Monteith, 1965) as presented in the United Nations FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper (FAO 56) by Allen et al. (1988). Penman-Monteith Equation (PM) Equation is used to estimate ETo when daily solar radiation, maximum and minimum air temperature, dew point temperature, and wind speed data are available. It is recommended by both the America Society of Civil Engineers and United Nations FAO for estimating ETo. Crop Evapotranspiration (ETc), both in unit value (acre feet per acre), & volume (acre feet) Commonly known as potential evapotranspiration, which is the amount of water used by plants in transpiration and evaporation of water from adjacent plants and soil surfaces during a specific time period. ETc is computed as the product of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and a crop coefficient (Kc) value, i.e., ETc = ETo x Kc. One Acre foot equals about 325851 gallons, or enough water to cover an acre of land about the size of a football field, one foot deep. Crop Coefficient (Kc) Relates ET of a given crop at a specific time in its growth stage to a reference ET. Incorporates effects of crop growth state, crop density, and other cultural factors affecting ET. The reference condition has been termed "potential" and relates to grass. The main sources of Kc information are the FAO 24 (Doorenbos and Pruitt 1977) and FAO 56 (Allen et al. 1988) papers on evapotranspiration. Effective Precipitation (Ep), both in unit value (acre feet per acre), & volume (acre feet) Fraction of rainfall effectively used by a crop, rather than mobilized as runoff or deep percolation Evapotranspiration of Applied Water (ETaw), both in unit value (acre feet per acre), & volume (acre feet) Net amount of irrigation water needed to produce a crop (not including irrigation application efficiency). As included in this EnviroAtlas dataset, community level domestic water demand is calculated using locally available water use data per capita in gallons of water per day (GPD), distributed dasymetrically, and summarized by Census block group. Domestic water use, as defined in this case, is intended to represent residential indoor and outdoor water use (e.g., cooking, hygiene, landscaping, pools, etc.) for primary residences (i.e., excluding second homes and tourism rentals). For the purposes of this metric, these publicly-supplied estimates are also applied and considered representative of local self-supplied water use. Specific to San Diego, CA, Urban Water Management Plans (available via data.ca.gov and individual providers) and an average of available Residential Gallons Per Capita per Day (R-GPCD) data (available through the California State Water Resources Control Board (CSWRCB)) were used. Within the EnviroAtlas community boundary, provider estimates range from 61 to 362 GPD. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. The USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Downloadable Data Collection from The National Map (TNM) is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that encodes information about naturally occurring and constructed bodies of surface water (lakes, ponds, and reservoirs), paths through which water flows (canals, ditches, streams, and rivers), and related entities such as point features (springs, wells, stream gages, and dams). The information encoded about these features includes classification and other characteristics, delineation, geographic name, position and related measures, a "reach code" through which other information can be related to the NHD, and the direction of water flow. The network of reach codes delineating water and transported material flow allows users to trace movement in upstream and downstream directions. In addition to this geographic information, the dataset contains metadata that supports the exchange of future updates and improvements to the data. The NHD supports many applications, such as making maps, geocoding observations, flow modeling, data maintenance, and stewardship. DWR was the steward for NHD and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) in California. We worked with other organizations to edit and improve NHD and WBD, using the business rules for California. California's NHD improvements were sent to USGS for incorporation into the national database. The most up-to-date products are accessible from the USGS website. In September 2022, USGS officially notified DWR that the NHD would become static as USGS resources will be devoted to the transition to the new 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP). 3DHP will consist of LiDAR-derived hydrography at a higher resolution than NHD. Upon completion, 3DHP data will be easier to maintain, based on a modern data model and architecture, and better meet the requirements of users that were documented in the Hydrography Requirements and Benefits Study (2016). The initial releases of 3DHP will be the NHD data cross-walked into the 3DHP data model. It will take several years for the 3DHP to be built out for California. Please refer to the resources on this page for more information.

The California State Water Resources Control Board is currently in the process of improving the functionality and accessibility of information residing in their Water Quality Control Plans (aka Basin Plans). In order to achieve this, the data (i.e. statewide water quality objectives, beneficial uses, applicable TMDLs, etc.), are being transferred to a standardized digital format and linked to applicable surface water features. This dataset is limited to the beneficial uses data, while the water quality objectives, applicable TMDLs, etc. will be released at a later date. Data formats will include GIS data layers and numerous nonspatial data tables. The GIS layers contain hydrography features derived from a 2012 snapshot of the high-resolution (1:24000 scale) National Hydrography Dataset with added attribution. Nonspatial tables will contain various textual and numeric data from the Regional Basin and State Plans. The extent of the dataset covers the state of California and the non-spatial tables reflect the information and elements from the various plans used up to 2020. The GIS layers and associated attribution will enable the future integration of the various elements of the Basin Plans to ensure that all applicable Basin Plan requirements for a particular waterbody can be determined in a quick and precise manner across different modern mediums. The data are being managed and the project implemented by State and Regional Water Board staff using ESRI's ArcGIS Server and ArcSDE technology.
This dataset consists of raster geotiff outputs of annual map projections of land use and land cover for the California Central Valley for the period 2011-2101 across 5 future scenarios. Four of the scenarios were developed as part of the Central Valley Landscape Conservation Project. The 4 original scenarios include a Bad-Business-As-Usual (BBAU; high water availability, poor management), California Dreamin’ (DREAM; high water availability, good management), Central Valley Dustbowl (DUST; low water availability, poor management), and Everyone Equally Miserable (EEM; low water availability, good management). These scenarios represent alternative plausible futures, capturing a range of climate variability, land management activities, and habitat restoration goals. We parameterized our models based on close interpretation of these four scenario narratives to best reflect stakeholder interests, adding a baseline Historical Business-As-Usual scenario (HBAU) for comparison. For these future map projections, the model was initialized in 2011 and run forward on an annual time step to 2101. Each filename has the associated scenario ID (scn418 = DUST, scn419 = DREAM, scn420 = HBAU, scn421 = BBAU, and scn426 = EEM), State Class identification as “sc”, model iteration (= it1 in all cases as only 1 Monte Carlo simulation was modeled), and timestep as “ts” information embedded in the file naming convention. For example, the filename scn418.sc.it1.ts2027.tif represents the DUST scenario (scn418), state class information (sc), iteration 1 (it1), for the 2027 model year (ts2027). The full methods and results of this research are described in detail in the parent manuscript "Integrated modeling of climate, land use, and water availability scenarios and their impacts on managed wetland habitat: A case study from California’s Central Valley" (2021).
USGS researchers with the Patterns in the Landscape – Analyses of Cause and Effect (PLACE) project are releasing a collection of high-frequency surface water map composites derived from daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery. Using Google Earth Engine, the team developed customized image processing steps and adapted the Dynamic Surface Water Extent (DSWE) to generate surface water map composites in California for 2003-2019 at a 250-m pixel resolution. Daily maps were merged to create 6, 3, 2, and 1 composite(s) per month corresponding to approximately 5-day, 10-day, 15-day, and monthly products, respectively. The resulting maps are available as downloadable files for each year. Each file includes 72, 36, 24, or 12 bands that coincide with the number of maps generated in the 5-day, 10-day, 15-day, and monthly products, respectively. The bands are ordered chronologically, with the first band representing the beginning of the calendar year and the last band representing the end of the year. Each set of maps is labeled according to year and product type. There are 17 GeoTIF (.tif) raster data files for each composite product.

(1) Small Water Suppliers: In total, 2,419 small water suppliers were examined for their relative risk of drought and water shortage. Of these, 2,244 are community water systems. The remaining 175 systems analyzed are small non-community non-transient water systems that serve schools for which there is available spatial information. This dataset contains the final risk score and individual risk factors for each supplier examined. Spatial boundaries of water suppliers' service areas were used to calculate the extent and severity of each suppliers' exposure to projected climate changes (temperature, wildfire, and sea level rise) and to current environmental conditions and events. Communities with a record of one or more domestic well installed within the past 50 years are included in the analysis. Each community examined received a numeric risk score, which is derived from a set of indicators developed from a stakeholder process. Indicators used to estimate risk represented three key components: (1) the exposure of suppliers and communities to hazardous conditions and events, (2) the physical and social vulnerability of communities to the exposure, and (3) recent history of shortage and drought impacts. The unit of analysis for the rural communities, also referred to as "self-supplied communities" is U.S. Census Block Groups (ACS 2012-2016 Tiger Shapefile). The Census Block Groups do not necessarily represent socially-defined communities, but they do cover areas where population resides. Using this spatial unit for this analysis allows us to access demographic information that is otherwise not available in small geographic units.
The aquifer risk map is being developed to fulfill requirements of SB-200 and is intended to help prioritize areas where domestic wells and state small water systems may be accessing groundwater that does not meet primary drinking water standards (maximum contaminant level or MCL). In accordance with SB-200, the risk map is to be made available to the public and is to be updated annually starting January 1, 2021. The Fund Expenditure Plan states the risk map will be used by Water Boards staff to help prioritize areas for available SAFER funding. This layer contains summarized water quality risk per census block group, square mile section, and well point. The overall census block group water quality risk is based on five risk factors (1. the count of chemicals with a long-term average (20 year) or recent result (within 2 years) above the MCL, 2. the count of chemicals with a long-term average (20 year) or recent result (within 2 years) within 80% of the MCL, 3. the average magnitude or results above the MCL, 4. the percent area with chemicals above the MCL, and 5. the percent area with chemicals within 80% of the MCL). The specific chemicals that contribute to these risk factors are listed as well. Higher values for each individual risk factor contribute to a higher overall score. The scores are converted to percentiles to normalize the results. Higher percentiles indicate higher water quality risk. The water quality data is based on depth-filtered, de-clustered water quality results from public and domestic supply wells, collected following a similar methodology as the Domestic Well Needs Assessment White Paper. This digital dataset is comprised of three separate data files that contain total dissolved solids, well construction, and well identifying information for 3,546 water wells used to map salinity in and around 31 southern and central California oil fields. Salinity mapping was done for 27 fields located in the southern San Joaquin Valley of Kern County (North Belridge, South Belridge, Canfield Ranch, North Coles Levee, South Coles Levee, Cymric, Edison, Elk Hills, Fruitvale, Greely, Jasmin, Kern Bluff, Kern Front, Kern River, Lost Hills, Mount Poso, Mountain View, Poso Creek, Rio Bravo, Rosedale, Rosedale Ranch, Round Mountain, San Emidio Nose, Tejon, Ten Section, Wheeler Ridge, and Yowlumne), 3 fields in the LA Basin of Los Angeles County (Montebello, Santa Fe Springs, and Wilmington), and 1 field in the central coast area of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties (Santa Maria Valley). Unlike petroleum wells, water wells both within and adjacent to oil fields of interest were used for salinity mapping. Water wells within an area (buffer) of 2-miles from the administrative field boundaries, with the exception of the Wilmington oil field with a buffer of 1-mile, were used for salinity mapping. Water wells located within overlapping buffer areas of adjacent oil fields were assigned to multiple fields for the purpose of being able to map salinity on a field-by-field basis. The dataset includes total dissolved solids (TDS) analyses from 1927 to 2016. Many of the analyses represent TDS concentrations that were calculated, as part of the salinity mapping, from specific conductance (SC) in lieu of reported TDS concentrations. Approximately 30 percent of the mapped water wells are wholly or partially derived from SC. In addition, approximately 50 percent of the water wells have TDS or SC analyses from more than one unique sample date. For wells having multiple analyses TDS represents the median value for the entire period of record, irrespective of whether it is from reported, calculated, or a combination of both TDS types. This dataset also includes ancillary data in the form of bottom perforation depth, well depth, or hole depth, land-surface elevation at the well head, and well location and identifier information. Bottom perforation depth was missing for about 65 percent of all water wells used for salinity mapping and were assigned a alternative value for plotting purposes. Where available, well depth or hole depth were used in lieu of bottom perforation depth. For water wells lacking bottom perforation, well depth, or hole depth (40 percent), the bottom perforation was estimated based on screen length when available (5 percent), or when the median bottom perforation or median well depth for all wells associated with an individual field is provided as an approximation for the purpose of vertical plotting (35 percent). Summary data about each well used for salinity mapping is contained in the file called Water_Wells_Summary_Data. Detailed information about all individual TDS values including those used for determining median TDS values, are contained in the file called Water_Wells_All_Data. Data used for the development of linear regression equations for calculating TDS from specific conductance in lieu of reported TDS values are contained in the file called Water_Wells_Regress_Data.

The Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) is a seamless, national hydrologic unit dataset. Hydrologic units represent the area of the landscape that drains to a portion of the stream network. (https://www.usgs.gov/national-hydrography/watershed-boundary-dataset) It is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in partnership with the states. The Department of Water Resources is the steward for the California portion of this dataset.
The hydrologic units (HU) in the WBD form a standardized system for organizing, collecting, managing, and reporting hydrologic information for the nation. The HUs in the WBD are arranged in a nested, hierarchical system with each HU in the system identified using a unique code. Hydrologic unit codes (HUC) are developed using a progressive two-digit system where each successively smaller areal unit is identified by adding two digits to the identifying code the smaller unit is nested within. WBD contains eight levels of progressive hydrologic units identified by unique 2- to 16-digit codes. The dataset is complete for the United States to the 12-digit hydrologic unit. The 8-digit level unit is often referred to as HUC8 and is a commonly used reference framework for planning and environmental assessment.
This particular version of the dataset was created by downloading the CA State extract of the National Hydrography Dataset from the USGS website https://www.usgs.gov/national-hydrography/access-national-hydrography-products and then performing a geoprocessing operation in ArcGIS Pro software to clip the HUC8s at the state of California political boundary. (https://data.cnra.ca.gov/dataset/california-county-boundaries2). A web map service was created with this dataset, but at it's original digitized resolution it can take a long time to render in a web map application. This dataset is a simplified version, created by use of the ArcGIS Simplify Polygon tool with the Douglas-Peucker Line simplification algorithm, reducing the vertex count from 1,095,449 to 9108. This dataset was reprojected from the original NAD 83 Geographic Coordinate System to WGS 1984 Web Mercator auxiliary sphere for use in web map applications. The program supports a large number of coastal-zone- and ocean-management issues, including the California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) (California Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2008), which requires information about the distribution of ecosystems as part of the design and proposal process for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas. A focus of CSMP is to map California’s State Waters with consistent methods at a consistent scale. The CSMP approach is to create highly detailed seafloor maps through collection, integration, interpretation, and visualization of swath sonar data (the undersea equivalent of satellite remote-sensing data in terrestrial mapping), acoustic backscatter, seafloor video, seafloor photography, high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles, and bottom-sediment sampling data. The map products display seafloor morphology and character, identify potential marine benthic habitats, and illustrate both the surficial seafloor geology and shallow (to about 100 m) subsurface geology. It is emphasized that the more interpretive habitat and geology data rely on the integration of multiple, new high-resolution datasets and that mapping at small scales would not be possible without such data. The distribution and thickness of young sediment (deposited over the past about 21,000 years, during the most recent sea-level rise) is interpreted on the basis of the seismic-reflection data. The geologic polygons merge onshore geologic mapping (compiled from existing maps by the California Geological Survey) and new offshore geologic mapping that is based on integration of high-resolution bathymetry and backscatter imagery seafloor-sediment and rock samplesdigital camera and video imagery, and high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles. The information provided by the map sheets, pamphlet, and data catalog has a broad range of applications. High-resolution bathymetry, acoustic backscatter, ground-truth-surveying imagery, and habitat mapping all contribute to habitat characterization and ecosystem-based management by providing essential data for delineation of marine protected areas and ecosystem restoration. Many of the maps provide high-resolution baselines that will be critical for monitoring environmental change associated with climate change, coastal development, or other forcings. High-resolution bathymetry is a critical component for modeling coastal flooding caused by storms and tsunamis, as well as inundation associated with longer term sea-level rise. Seismic-reflection and bathymetric data help characterize earthquake and tsunami sources, critical for natural-hazard assessments of coastal zones. Information on sediment distribution and thickness is essential to the understanding of local and regional sediment transport, as well as the development of regional sediment-management plans. In addition, siting of any new offshore infrastructure (for example, pipelines, cables, or renewable-energy facilities) will depend on high-resolution mapping. Finally, this mapping will both stimulate and enable new scientific research and also raise public awareness of, and education about, coastal environments and issues. Web services were created using an ArcGIS service definition file. The ArcGIS REST service and OGC WMS service include all Offshore of Santa Cruz map area data layers. Data layers are symbolized as shown on the associated map sheets.
For many years, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has collected land use data throughout the state and used this information to develop water use estimates for statewide and regional planning efforts, including water use projections, water use efficiency evaluation, groundwater model development, and water transfers. These data are essential for regional analysis and decision making, which has become increasingly important as DWR and other state agencies seek to address resource management issues, regulatory compliance issues, environmental impacts, ecosystem services, urban and economic development, and other issues. Increased availability of digital satellite imagery, aerial photography and new analytical tools make remote sensing based land use surveys possible at a field scale that is comparable to that of DWR’s historical on the ground field surveys. Current technologies allow accurate, large-scale crop and land use identification to be performed at desired time increments, and make possible more frequent and comprehensive statewide land use information. Responding to this need, DWR sought expertise and support for identifying crop types and other land uses and quantifying crop acreages statewide using remotely sensed imagery and associated analytical techniques. Currently, Statewide Crop Maps are available for the Water Years 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and PROVISIONALLY for 2022.
