The Canada Basemap Transportation (CBMT) is a raster tile service that provides spatial reference context with an emphasis on transportation networks across Canada. It is designed especially for use as a background layer in a web mapping application or geographic information system (GIS). Access: Access is free of charge under the terms of the Open Government Licence - Canada. Data Sources: Data for the CBMT is sourced from the following datasets: - Topographic data of Canada – CanVec Series - Official names from the Canadian Geographical Names Database (CGNDB). Projections: - Data is provided in the EPSG:3978 (NAD83 Canada Atlas Lambert) projected coordinate system. - Data is provided in the EPSG:3857 (WGS84 Pseudo-Mercator) projected coordinate system. Geographic Coverage: - The CBMT in the EPSG:3857 has complete coverage of the world, with full datasets in Canada and only partial data in other parts of the world including boundaries, Country Names, and major cities. - The CBMT in the EPSG:3978 covers the entire geographic area of Canada and some major transportation routes and cities in the northern States of the USA. Additional Versions: - The CBMT is available as a dynamic service (WMS) or a tiled service (ESRI REST and WMTS). - A geometry-only version (CBMT GEOM) and a text-only version (CBMT TXT) are available. - French versions of the basemap are accessible via the Carte de base du Canada - Transport (CBCT).
This map is designed to be used as a basemap by GIS professionals and as a reference map by anyone. The map includes cities, water features, physiographic features, parks, landmarks, highways, roads, railways, airports, and administrative boundaries, overlaid on land cover and shaded relief imagery for added context. Alignment of boundaries is a presentation of the feature provided by our data vendors and does not imply endorsement by Esri or any governing authority. The map provides coverage for the world down to a scale of ~1:72k. Coverage is provided down to ~1:4k for the following areas: Africa, Australia and New Zealand; Europe and Russia; India; the continental United States and Hawaii; Canada; Mexico; most of the Middle East; Pacific Island nations; South America and Central America. Coverage down to ~1:1k and ~1:2k is available in select urban areas. This basemap was compiled from a variety of best available sources from several data providers, including the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , U.S. National Park Service (NPS), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), GeoBase, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, DeLorme, HERE, and Esri. Data for Africa and Pacific Island nations from ~1:288k to ~1:4k (~1:1k in select areas) was sourced from OpenStreetMap contributors. Specific country list and documentation of Esri's process for including OSM data is available to view. The data for the World Topographic Map is provided by the GIS community. You can contribute your data to this service and have it served by Esri. For details on the coverage in this map and the users who contributed data for this map via the Community Maps Program, view the list of Contributors for the World Topographic Map.Feedback: Have you ever seen a problem in the Esri World Topographic Map community basemap that you wanted to see fixed? You can use the Topographic Map Feedback web map to provide feedback on issues or errors that you see in the Esri World Topographic Map. The feedback will be reviewed by the ArcGIS Online team and considered for one of our updates.

The Canada Base Map - Transportation (CBMT) web mapping services of the Earth Sciences Sector at Natural Resources Canada, are intended primarily for online mapping application users and developers. These services are available in multiple formats and projections including: WMS, WMTS, ESRI REST, SOAP, Lambert Conformal Conic (ESPG:3978), Web Mercator (EPSG:3857), etc. These services can be accessed at no cost and without restrictions according to the terms of the license at https://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/geogratis/en/licence.jsp.This collection of base map services have been created to provide locational context with an emphasis on transportation networks over which thematic information can be overlaid. Cartography (colour, symbology, etc.) of the base map has been specifically designed so that thematic information will be more prominent than the locational information. The range of viewing scales for this service is between 1:200,000,000 and 1:1,000. Features from the following datasets are used by the CBMT service: CanVec, GeoBase, the National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) and base data from the Atlas of Canada National Scale datasets.
The Canada Transportation Base Map (CBMT) web map service of the Earth Sciences Sector at Natural Resources Canada, is an Internet service which is intended primarily for online map application users and developers. This service is compatible with OpenGIS® Consortium (OGC) (http://www.opengeospatial.org/) Web Map Service (WMS) standards and specifications, version 1.1.1. This base map service has been created to provide locational context with an emphasis on transportation networks over which thematic information can be overlaid. Cartography (colour, symbology, etc.) of the base map has been specifically designed so that thematic information will be more prominent than the locational context information. The range of viewing scales for this service is between 1:60,000,000 and 1:10,000. Features from the following data sets are used by the CBMT service: CanVec, GeoBase, the National Topographic Data Base and base data from the Atlas of Canada National Scale datasets.
The dataset offers Canadian coverge based on the VMAP0 data product which is a global digital dataset produced and maintained by the United States National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA http://www.nima.mil) at a nominal scale of 1:1 000 000. The Atlas of Canada, in wanting to choose an international global digital map base, has adapted the VMAP0 for use as a base from which other, smaller map scales can be created and to which thematic layers can be added.
The VMAP0 data was first released as the DCW (Digital Chart of the World) dataset. The DCW has been widely used and has proved to be very useful because it was the first global multitheme dataset at such a scale in the public domain. Despite its success, the DCW dataset is widely known to have had some deficiencies. The revision 4 data for North America was much better in quality, but still must be improved before it would be suitable for use by the Atlas of Canada.

This cartographic digital product is derived from the Atlas of Canada's wall map "The World" (MCR 0046) and "Le monde" (MCR 0046F) published in 2021. The World is a general reference political map focused on the names and international boundaries of sovereign and non-sovereign countries. The information is portrayed using the Winkel II projection at a scale of 1:29 000 000. The dataset includes international boundaries, populated places, and labelled major hydrographic and physical features. In the geodatabase the representation of political boundaries do not necessarily reflect the position of the Government of Canada on all international issues of recognition, sovereignty or jurisdiction; some of the populated places have seasonal populations, while others are research or military bases with no permanent populations; and, there are no attribute information in the geodatabase for the labelled hydrographic and physical features.
Contained within the Atlas of Canada's Reference Map Series, 1961 to 2010, is the latest version of a regularly-updated map of the National Atlas of Canada Base Map Series. Each version shows the World at an equatorial scale of 1: 35 000 000. The map is a general reference sheet focusing on showing the name and status of all sovereign countries and dependencies, and showing major cities. The 2005 version has two new additions: one is showing shaded relief for land areas; the other is showing bathymetric contours and colours for all marine areas.

Many geometrical schemes - or map projections - are used to represent the curved surface of the Earth on map sheets. Canada uses the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system. It is called transverse because the strips run north-south rather than east-west along the equator. This data class shows a 10 km x 10 km coordinate system based on the UTM projection using the North American Datum 83 (NAD83) grid. It includes: * Military Grid Reference- identifies a specific military grid reference system grid cell * Fire Base Map identifier- five digit identifier used by MNR's Aviation and Forest Fire Management Program to identify a fire basemap * Atlas identifier - identifies a specific grid cell * UTM Map Sheet Number - ID number of a UTM mapsheet This product requires the use of GIS software. UTM Grid - Map Projections *[NAD83]: North American Datum 83 *[UTM]: Universal Transverse Mercator
