Alberta is the largest natural gas producing province in Canada. In 2020, over 121 billion cubic meters of natural gas were sourced from gas fields in Alberta. This was nearly double the amount extracted in British Columbia, which ranked second.

This data set provides historical monthly marketable natural gas production by province from the beginning of 2000 to the most current available month for each province. Canadian natural gas consumption is highly variable and is dependent on weather. While Canada is the world’s fifth largest producer of natural gas, production is centralized in Western Canada (primarily in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan). Eastern Canada is connected to production sources via pipelines. In addition to pipeline flows (inter-provincial or to the U.S.), Canada also imports natural gas in liquefied form (LNG), and to a lesser extent exports LNG. When natural gas is cooled to approximately -162° Celsius, it becomes a liquid and significantly shrinks in volume. This process is utilized to transport natural gas via specialized water-borne tankers around the world. Canada has one large LNG import terminal, Canaport, located in Saint John, New Brunswick. Canada also exports and imports LNG via other land-based and water-based ports. In these instances LNG is stored in specialized modular containers. Canada Energy Regulator regulates the export and import of natural gas. Orders or licenses are required to export or import natural gas to and from Canada, including LNG. Holders of these authorizations report monthly on their activities to CER. LNG import and export activities are available by terminal from 2009 to present. Data is delayed by approximately 2 months.

Canadian Marketable Natural Gas Production, The Energy Market Assessment, Short-term Canadian Natural Gas Deliverability 2016-2018, provides an estimate of the amount of marketable natural gas by gas grouping and by province from the beginning of 2016 to the end of 2018. The outlook presents three distinct cases, a Higher Price Case, Mid-Range Price Case, and a Lower Price Case, each of which are based on a set of assumptions, which are described in detail at: http://www.neb-one.gc.ca/nrg/sttstc/ntrlgs/rprt/2016-2018ntrlgsdlvrblty/index-eng.html. The dataset also provides monthly historical production by Western Canada gas grouping from the beginning of 1998 to the end of 2015. Description

This dataset comprises a single .csv file containing monthly time-series crude oil production data for all of Canada. The months for which data is available range from January of 2016 to June of 2024. Measurements are available in cubic metres and in barrels. The file also contains Western Canada Select (WCS) and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) average monthly price data.

Canada has significant proven reserves of crude oil (178 billion barrels), second only to those of Saudi Arabia. Canadian natural gas reserves were 58 trillion cubic feet as of year-end 2006. These resources are found in the country’s seven major sedimentary basins. The primary petroleum-producing sedimentary basin is the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB), which extends from the Canadian Shield to the Rocky Mountains through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and northeastern British Columbia. There are also producing basins in southern Ontario, offshore Newfoundland, and the Scotian Shelf. Potential reserves are also found in Northern Canada, where an estimated 30 per cent of Canada’s conventional oil resources are located. The map shows the major petroleum-producing fields (or pools) of conventional natural gas, crude oil and the oil sands, as well as the extensive pipeline network.
