    Description

The National Travel Survey (NTS) was developed to fully replace the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC record number 3810) and replace the Canadian resident component of the International Travel Survey (ITS record number 3152). The National Travel Survey collects information about the domestic and international travel of Canadian residents. The National Travel Survey provides statistics on the activities of Canadian residents related to domestic and international tourism. It was developed to measure the volume, the characteristics and the economic impact of tourism. For the Canadian System of National Accounts, NTS measures the size of domestic travel in Canada from the demand side.

The NTS collects information about the domestic and international travel of Canadian residents. The trip file contains trip characteristics, for example, the origin, the main destination, the reason of the trip, the spending, etc. For each respondent on the person file, there is a trip record for every trip reported. If a respondent did not report any trips, there would be no trip records for that respondent on the trip file.

This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Note that the distribution contact is different for the general public than for Government of Alberta ministries. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. The National Topographic System of Canada (NTS) is a national mapping reference grid defined by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) that is based on degrees of latitude and longitude. Starting at the Prime Meridian and at the Equator, the 1:50 000 grid is formed by intersecting every 1/8 degree of the meridians with every 1/4 degrees of parallels. It is also true that the standard 1:20 000 NTS block is broken down into 4 1:20 000 blocks that are labelled by quadrant. Each polygon in the grid is designated with a two digit number. a single letter. two additional numbers and a two letter quadrant value (Example 83H08NE). The 1:20 000 NTS grid was developed to support the Provincial Digital Base Mapping Project and is not part of the formal NRCan NTS program. The province of Alberta is covered by 2838 complete and 269 partially complete 1:20 000 NTS blocks.

Topographic maps produced by Natural Resources Canada conform to the National Topographic System (NTS) of Canada. Indexes are available in three standard scales: 1:1,000,000, 1:250,000 and 1:50,000. The area covered by a given mapsheet is determined by its latitude and longitude. 1:1,000,000 mapsheets are identified by a combination of three numbers (e.g. 098). 1:250,000 mapsheets are identified by a combination of numbers, and letters ranging from A through P (e.g. 098C). Sixteen smaller segments (1 to 16) form blocks used for 1:50,000 mapping (e.g. 098C03).

    Description

The National Travel Survey, sponsored by Statistics Canada, aims to measure the characteristics and the economic impact of the tourism activities of Canadian residents. The objectives of the survey are to provide information about the number of trips and expenditures by Canadian residents by trip origin, destination, duration, type of accommodation used, trip reason, mode of travel, etc.; to provide information on travel incidence and to provide the socio-demographic profile of travellers and non-travellers. From a macroeconomic point of view, the NTS measures the domestic and international tourism demand by Canadian residents. The National Travel Survey was developed to fully replace the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (record number 3810) and replace the Canadian resident component of the International Travel Survey (record number 3152). The National Travel Survey collects information about the domestic and international travel of Canadian residents.

Contained within the 4th Edition (1974) of the Atlas of Canada is a set of three maps. The main map shows areas for which there are 1:50 000 scale National Topographic System (NTS) map sheet coverages up to October 1970. This map also denotes whether the NTS sheets were published maps or advanced prints. The second map shows areas for which there are 1:25 000 scale NTS map sheet coverages up to October 1970. The 1:25 000 scale NTS map sheets are all denoted as being published maps. The third map shows areas covered by the 1:1 000 000 International Map of the World (IMW). The IMW sheets are also denoted as being published maps or advance prints. A supplementary text providing additional information on topographic map coverage of Canada up to October 1970 accompanies this map set.

The Canadian Digital Elevation Model (CDEM) is part of Natural Resources Canada's altimetry system designed to better meet the users' needs for elevation data and products. The CDEM stems from the existing Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED). In these data, elevations can be either ground or reflective surface elevations. A CDEM mosaic can be obtained for a pre-defined or user-defined extent. The coverage and resolution of a mosaic varies according to latitude and to the extent of the requested area. Derived products such as slope, shaded relief and colour shaded relief maps can also be generated on demand. The pre-packaged GeoTif datasets are based on the National Topographic System of Canada (NTS) at the 1:250 000 scale; the NTS index file is available in the Data Resources section(Shape, KML).

Detailed estimates for international visitors are not available at the provincial and tourism regional level due to small sample sizes and limited data from the Visitor Travel Survey (VTS). Description

This is a legacy product that is no longer supported. It may not meet current government standards.

The Canadian Digital Surface Model (CDSM) is part of Natural Resources Canada's altimetry system designed to better meet the users' needs for elevation data and products. The 0.75-second (~20 m) CDSM consists of a derived product from the original 1-second (30 m) Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) digital surface model (DSM). In these data, the elevations are captured at the top of buildings, trees, structures, and other objects rather than at ground level.

A CDSM mosaic can be obtained for a pre-defined or user-defined extent. The coverage and resolution of a mosaic varies according to the extent of the requested area.

Derived products such as slope, shaded relief and colour shaded relief maps can also be generated on demand by using the Geospatial-Data Extraction tool. Data can then be saved in many formats.

The pre-packaged GeoTiff datasets are based on the National Topographic System of Canada (NTS) at the 1:50 000 scale; the NTS index file is available in the Resources section in many formats.
