    The Canadian Disaster Database is a publicly accessible web-based repository of historical information about natural and man-made disasters that have taken place since 1900 in Canada or abroad that have directly affected Canadians. The database contains information on over 1000 events and can be used to support research, academic activities and decision-making across a breadth of fields including earth sciences, agriculture, climate change, biology and epidemiology, land use planning, insurance, investment, and the anthropological and sociological aspects of community resilience, among many others. Canada endeavours to provide the best information possible; however, the information contained in the Canadian Disaster Database (CDD) is based on information that is sourced from outside parties and may not be accurate. Canada makes no representations, warranties, or guarantees, express or implied, that the data contained in the CDD may be relied upon for any use whatsoever.     This database contains summary information on 168 Canadian flood disasters that occurred between 1900 and June 1997. The database is not, by sany means, a complete list of flood events in Canada since the vast majority of the floods did not cause disasters. All mentions of damage costs have not been corrected for inflation. The database also is biased towards the more densely populated areas of Canada where floods are more likely to impact humans.

    Flood extent polygons for the past three months throughout Canada as monitored by Natural Resources Canada using satellite imagery for emergency response. In response to large flood events, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), for the provision of emergency geomatics services, may be activated by Canada’s emergency management protocols. As new satellite imagery becomes available, NRCan will extract flood extent polygons and update the dataset in near real time (4 hours). This item contains the flood products generated in the past year. For any data relating to previous years, please refer to the Floods in Canada – Archive entry. Please note that the web mapping service may not display data if flood polygons have not been published by the EGS for the current year. The flood products generated are validated on a best effort basis. Various factors may affect the quality of the flood polygons. These factors include, but are not limited to, sensor type, image resolution, cloud cover or limitations of the flood polygon extraction method. In this layer, where possible, a symbology is applied to the flood polygons based on the underlying land use classification, or is simply unclassified and shows the raw flood extent. When using Web mapping services, to display a specific product, filter by date (UTC Date) and area of interest (AOI). Also, a link to download each product is available in the Resources section. This prepackaged and compressed product contains a Shape file, a PDF file and a KMZ file. Disclaimer : Emergency response authorities are the primary users of these satellite-derived open water flood extent map products. These products are generated to provide analysis and emergency response situational awareness and to facilitate decision-making during major flood events. The open water flood extent products are generated rapidly and limited time is available for editing and validation. The flood products reflect the open water flood conditions at the date/time of acquisition. While efforts are made to produce high quality products, near-real time products may contain errors due to the limited time available for vector editing and validation.     Données related to the monitoring of the 2019 floods in Quebec Attention: water extent data is a near real-time interpretation of satellite data; they were produced in operational mode and are provided as is without exhaustive validation. The product may contain errors, especially in urban areas. ## #Liste of available data: * the monitoring of flood and landslide events between April 14, 2019 and May 28, 2019 in geolocated points (web service and download), * municipalities affected by flood events between April 14, 2019 and May 28, 2019, updated in real time with the event layer (web service); * the boundaries of extent of open waters generated by Natural Resources Canada, derived from data Radarsat 2 satellites or other radar satellites and those generated by Dromedaire Géo-Innovations, derived from Sentinel satellite data (web service and download), * flood limits for the Chaudière River sector derived from heliborne data (web service and download) * satellite images in the visible and near infrared on the most severely affected areas (web service and download when possible). * acquired oblique images on April 29 on the Ottawa River and the greater region of Montreal as part of the National Aerial Surveillance Program (link to the application of the Federal Government Operations Center) All data are also available on an interactive map based on IGO2. ## #Note: Radarsat-2 satellite acquisitions are planned in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada. Access to radar satellites from other Canadian space agencies is possible thanks to the activation of the International Space and Major Disaster Charter. It is activated by Public Safety Canada. The images obtained via the international charter are processed by the emergency geomatics services of Natural Resources Canada as soon as possible and then the open water polygons are disseminated as open data on Data Canada and on Data Quebec. Other optical or radar acquisitions may have been obtained by the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) from private suppliers. The Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 acquisitions released in open data by the European Space Agency (ESA) were processed by the firm Dromadaire-Geo-Innovations.This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).

    Flood extent polygons from the last three days in selected Canadian regions that have been designated for observation, monitored by Natural Resources Canada using satellite imagery for emergency response. Coverage is not comprehensive nationwide. In response to large flood events, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), for the provision of emergency geomatics services, may be activated by Canada’s emergency management protocols. As new satellite imagery becomes available, NRCan will extract flood extent polygons and update the dataset in near real time (4 hours). This item contains the latest flood products generated in the past three days. For any data older than 72 hours, please refer to the Floods in Canada - Current Year entry. Note that the web mapping service may not display data if flood polygons have not been published by the EGS in the past three days. The flood products generated are validated on a best effort basis. Various factors may affect the quality of the flood polygons. These factors include, but are not limited to, sensor type, image resolution, cloud cover or limitations of the flood polygon extraction method. In this layer, where possible, a symbology is applied to the flood polygons based on the underlying land use classification, or is simply unclassified and shows the raw flood extent. When using Web mapping services, to display a specific product, filter by date (UTC Date) and area of interest (AOI). Also, a link to download each product directly is available in the Resources section. This prepackaged and compressed product contains a Shape file, a PDF file and a KMZ file.     Hurricane Evacuation Routes in North Carolina A hurricane evacuation route is a designated route used to direct traffic inland in case of a hurricane threat. This dataset is based on supplied data from gulf coast and Atlantic seaboard states. Each state was contacted by TGS to determine an official source for hurricane evacuation routes. GIS data was gathered from states willing to share such data. In cases where states were unable or unwilling to share data in this format, TGS requested that the states provide a source for identifying hurricane evacuation routes. The states usually identified a website that made this data available to the public. Hurricane evacuation routes depicted on non-GIS maps were digitized using aerial ortho imagery while referencing supplied maps and NAVTEQ_Streets_2006_Q3. Shape files that depicted hurricane evacuation routes were edge matched and merged with the digitized evacuation routes. All routes identified as primary hurricane evacuation routes were included in this dataset. If a state also designated secondary hurricane evacuation routes, they were included as well. Routes depicted in this dataset are dependent upon what each state identified as a hurricane evacuation route. Criteria used to identify these routes may vary from state to state. Homeland Security Use Cases: Use cases describe how the data may be used and help to define and clarify requirements. 1) A resource for emergency route planning purposes. 2) A resource for situational awareness planning and response for federal government events. 3) A portion of an evacuation route may be rendered unusable due to natural or man made disaster and rerouting of traffic is necessary. 4) An incident has occurred during an evacuation and first responders must quickly deploy to the area. 5) Public awareness.

    Description

    With the changing climate conditions, marine traffic along Canada’s coastal regions has increased over the past couple of decades and the need to improve our state of preparedness for oil-spill-related emergencies is critical. Baseline coastal information, such as shoreline form, substrate, and vegetation type, is required for prioritizing operations, coordinating onsite spill response activities (i.e. Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique [SCAT]), and providing information for wildlife and ecosystem management. Between 2010 and 2019, georeferenced high-definition videography and photos were collected for various study sites across coastal Canada. The study areas include Beaufort Sea, Mackenzie Delta channels and Banks Island in the western Canadian Arctic; James Bay, Hudson Bay, Nunavik, Resolute Bay, Victoria Strait, Baffin Island and Coronation Gulf in the eastern Canadian Arctic; Labrador, Bay of Fundy and Chedabucto Bay in Atlantic Canada and Kitimat, Haida Gwaii, North Vancouver Island, Mainland BC and Burrard Inlet in the northern Pacific. Data was collected during ice-free and low tide conditions (where applicable) between July and September. Low-altitude helicopter surveys were conducted at each study site to capture video of the shoreline characteristics. In addition to acquiring videography, ground-based observations were recorded in several locations for validation. Shoreline segmentation was then carried out by manual interpretation of the oblique videography and the photos aided by ancillary data. This involved splitting and classifying the shoreline vectors based on homogeneity of the upper intertidal zone. Detailed geomorphological information (i.e. shoreline type, substrate, slope, height, accessibility etc.) describing the upper intertidal, lower intertidal, supratidal and backshore zones was extracted from the video and entered into a geospatial database using a customized data collection form. In addition, biological characteristics like biobands, water features, fauna, human use etc. observed along the coast were recorded. The data was also validated through ground samples (when available) and a second interpreter QA (quality analysis) was performed on each dataset (excluding Nunavik) to ensure high quality and consistency. The final dataset contains segments ranging in length from 150 m to 2500 m (except Nunavik). The minimum segment length is 45 m for study areas in the west coast that were surveyed in 2018-2019. In total, about 33,700 km of shoreline were segmented within all the survey zones.

The Canadian Disaster Database is a publicly accessible web-based repository of historical information about natural and man-made disasters that have taken place since 1900 in Canada or abroad that have directly affected Canadians. The database contains information on over 1000 events and can be used to support research, academic activities and decision-making across a breadth of fields including earth sciences, agriculture, climate change, biology and epidemiology, land use planning, insurance, investment, and the anthropological and sociological aspects of community resilience, among many others. Canada endeavours to provide the best information possible; however, the information contained in the Canadian Disaster Database (CDD) is based on information that is sourced from outside parties and may not be accurate.
