The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2020 provides both spatial and textual information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for Australia, in both the marine and terrestrial environments. This dataset is for terrestrial data only. State, Territory and the large NGO conservation agencies supplied data current for 30 June 2020. This is the eleventh version of the terrestrial database, with previous versions released in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.The Department also publishes protected areas data for the marine environment. "CAPAD 2020 - Marine" contains spatial and text information about offshore protected areas, for both State and Commonwealth waters. Previous versions of CAPAD marine information have been published in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area: "A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values." (IUCN Definition 2008).The department publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/nrs/science/capad.CAPAD 2020 is available for use through the CC-BY 4.0 licencing model. The main attributes of Terrestrial CAPAD 2020 are described below. For more information please refer to the CAPAD Technical Specification document.CAPAD 2020 Attributes:PA_ID: A unique code for the protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. In most cases this number will be generated by the DAWE, and is generally based on the RES_NUMBER provided by the data custodian.PA_PID: A unique code for a parcel or zone within a protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. For example, a protected area with two zones share the same PA_ID and are assigned PA_PID values of PA_ID_a and PA_ID_b. If a protected area does not have multiple parts/zones then the PA_PID is by default the same as the PA_ID.NAME: The official (gazetted) name of a protected area. Gazetted PAs with no name are flagged as "Unnamed" with a reserve number. e.g. Unnamed HA1207.TYPE: The type of protected area according to the establishment mechanism. eg. Due to the change in ENVIRON based categorisation rules in the 2016/2018 versions of CAPAD, it has been noted in the COMMENTS field of marine CAPAD if a record was previously included in terrestrial CAPAD. ENVIRON: The code denotes the environment type conserved in the protected area as described by the data custodian. A protected area can assigned an ENVIRON value of terrestrial, marine or both. T = Terrestrial - Generally includes land and or water above high water mark including aquatic ecosystems. B = Both - Includes land and water both above and below the high water mark. M = Marine - Generally includes land and or water below high water mark and may include islands and reefs above high water mark. Terrestrial CAPAD contains 'T' and 'B' protected areas. Marine CAPAD contains 'M' and 'B' protected areas. If a protected area is coded as 'B' by the data provider, DAWE calculates the proportional representation of marine and terrestrial areas within the protected area (all component polygons combined). If 70% or more of the protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the marine CAPAD dataset. If less than 70% protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the terrestrial CAPAD dataset. Prior to CAPAD 2016 only ENVIRON ='M' records were

The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2018 provides both spatial and textual information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for Australia, in both the marine and terrestrial environments. This dataset is the marine component of the CAPAD only. Marine CAPAD provides information about off-shore protected areas in both state and Commonwealth waters. State and Territory conservation agencies supplied data current to 30 June 2018. This is the ninth version of the marine database, with previous versions released in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.The Department also publishes protected areas data for the terrestrial environment. The terrestrial component of the database has been previously released in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area: "A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values." (IUCN Definition 2008).The department publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/nrs/science/capad.CAPAD 2018 is available for use through the CC-BY 4.0 licencing model. The main attributes of Marine CAPAD 2018 are described below. For more information please refer to the CAPAD Technical Specification document.Marine CAPAD 2018 Attributes:PA_ID: A unique three digit code for the protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. For marine reserves refer to the document “Guidelines for Establishing the National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas (NRSMPA)Y = Yes. The sea has been assessed as a protected area that meets the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA.N = No. The sea has been assessed as not meeting the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA. It is managed for nature conservation without meeting the NRSMPA standard.ND = Not Determined. The sea is managed for nature conservation although it has not been assessed to determine if it meets the standard for inclusion in the NRSMPA.Note that for the calculation of area statistics only protected areas with an NRS_PA value of 'Y' or 'I' are included.GAZ_AREA: area in hectares as described in the nomination document (e.g. parliamentary gazettal), to the nearest hectare. Some protected areas do not have a specific area in the designation.GIS_AREA: The area of a protected area based on current spatial data in the Albers Equal Area projection calculated by DoEE using ArcGIS software. It is this field that is used to calculate the statistics provided in spreadsheets at: www.environment.gov.au/capad/GAZ_DATE: Gazettal date of the original proclamation that established any form of protected area.LATEST_GAZ: The date of the most recent gazettal or proclamation to amend the protected area. It can be the same as the GAZ_DATE if there have been no changes or additions to the protected area.STATE: The CODE for the State or Territory in which the Protected Area is located. Joint management arrangements are recognised by a management board, agreement (e.g. ILUA) or other formal arrangement.P = Private - Private protected areas where land and resource owners hold decision-making authority, responsibility and accountability.COMMENTS: Extra information jurisdictions elect to supply. Due to the change in ENVIRON based categorisation rules in the 2016/2018 versions of CAPAD, it has been noted in the COMMENTS field of marine CAPAD if a record was previously included in terrestrial CAPAD.ENVIRON: The code denotes the environment type conserved in the protected area as described by the data custodian. A protected area can assigned an ENVIRON value of terrestrial, marine or both.T = Terrestrial - Generally includes land and or water above high water mark including aquatic ecosystems.B = Both - Includes land and water both above and below the high water mark.M = Marine - Generally includes land and or water below high water mark and may include islands and reefs above high water mark.Terrestrial CAPAD contains 'T' and 'B' protected areas. Marine CAPAD contains 'M' and 'B' protected areas. If a protected area is coded as 'B' by the data provider, DoEE calculates the proportional representation of marine and terrestrial areas within the protected area (all component polygons combined). If 70% or more of the protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the marine CAPAD dataset. If less than 70% protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the terrestrial CAPAD dataset.Prior to CAPAD 2016 only ENVIRON ='M' records were included in Marine CAPAD, all ENVIRON = 'T' or 'B' records were included in Terrestrial CAPAD. The method described above for managing ENVIRON = 'B' areas was introduced in CAPAD 2016 (and revised slightly in CAPAD 2018).MGT_PLAN: The CODE for the status of the management plan for the protected

The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2004 provides both spatial and attribute information about government and privately funded protected areas (PAs) both continental and off-shore PA's. Data were contributed by State/Territory nature and conservation agencies and also increasingly through privately funded organisations. This is the 5th version of the database, with previous versions released in 1997,1999, 2000 and 2002. CAPAD provides a snapshot of reserves that are meeting the IUCN standard of a reserve as described by:
"A protected area is an area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means" (IUCN 1994).
The CAPAD spatial data is reported in the biennial publication "Terrestrial and Marine Protected Areas In Australia", located on The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy and Water resources (DEW) website at http://www.environment.gov.au/capad
Two spatial datasets are available for download from the Discover Information Geographically (FED) website. - CAPAD Terrestrial (includes terrestrial protected areas and all unrestricted private protected areas). - CAPAD Marine and external territories (includes only marine and external protected areas).
This version of the datasets is a combined version of the terrestrial and marine and external territories. Note, South Australia Heritage Agreement protected areas are included in the dataset.
Main attributes in the database include:
NAME: official (gazetted) name of a PA or unofficial name. Gazetted PAs with no name are flagged as "Unnamed".
TYPE: official gazetted designation of the PA.
REPT_AREA: area of PA as reported in the report "Terrestrial and Marine Protected Areas of Australia". In most cases the area reported is the same as the GAZ_AREA. In some instances the reported area is made up of a gazettal area and also other areas that have not been included as part of the gazettal at the time of publication.
GAZ_AREA: area of PA described in the nomination document (eg. parliamentary gazettal), to the nearest hectare.
GIS_AREA: area of PA based on current spatial data. Where PA's are made up of multiple polygons (parts) the gis_area is the sum of all the polygons.
IUCN: the IUCN protected area category ascribed by the Managing authority, as outlined in the publication: CNPPA/WCMC "Guidelines for Protected Area management categories". Gland: IUCN, 1994. (ISBN: 2-8317-0201-1).
Definitions include: IA Strict Nature Reserve: PA managed mainly for science; IB Wilderness Area: PA managed mainly for wilderness protection; II National Park: PA managed mainly for ecosystem protection; III Natural Monument: PA managed mainly for conservation of specific natural features; IV Habitat / Species Management Area: PA managed mainly for conservation through management intervention; V Protected Landscape / Seascape: PA managed mainly for landscape/seascape conservation and recreation; VI Managed Resource Protected Area: PA managed mainly for the sustainable use of natural ecosystems.
GAZ_DATE - original gazettal/ proclamation date.
LATEST_GAZ - Date of most recent gazetted amendment or verification.
Other attributes include: STATE, AUTHORITY (eg.DEH) and COMMENTS (ancillary information, such as data source)
ENVIRON: A PA gazetted as terrestrial may have a marine component and vice versa. A PA can be 'T' terrestrial, marine 'M' and both 'B'CC - Attribution (CC BY) This data has been licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia Licence. More information can be found at http://www.ausgoal.gov.au/creative-commons. The data is supplied to the Commonwealth for compilation by States and Territories of Australia and custodianship rests with the following agencies. A list of the agencies is available in the acknowledgements section of the metadata entry.
The CAPAD data is supplied to the Commonwealth for compilation over a 6 month time frame and many months may pass before it is published and thus is not up-to-date at the time of publication and release by the Commonwealth.
It is the responsibility of the person using the CAPAD dataset to always check the metadata for the currency date within each jurisdiction and if required seek advice from the individual agencies on details of more recent gazettals of protected areas.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MARINE USERS – TRANSITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS The process for developing management plans has been completed for the five Commonwealth marine reserve networks declared around Australia and the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve. Until the new management plans come into effect transitional management arrangements are in place. Under these transitional arrangements, there are no changes "on the water" for users in the new areas added to the Commonwealth marine reserve estate. If people hold an existing approval to undertake activities within Commonwealth marine reserves or the now-revoked Coral Sea Conservation Zone, they are able to continue to operate under the terms of the existing approval. No additional administrative requirements apply. The management plan for the South-east Network came into effect on 1 July 2013, while the management plans for the South-west, North-west, North and Temperate East Networks and the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve are under review. The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2008 provides both spatial and text information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for continental Australia. State and Territory conservation agencies supplied data current for various dates between October 2008 and January 2009. This is the seventh version of the database, with previous versions released in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area:
"A protected area is an area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means" (IUCN 1994).
The department publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at http://www.environment.gov.au/capad
Main attributes in the database include:
NAME: the name of the protected area. Gazetted PAs with no name are flagged as "Unnamed" with a reserve number.

The CAPAD data is supplied to the Commonwealth for compilation over a 6-12 month time frame and many months may pass before it is published and thus is not up-to-date at the time of publication and release by the Commonwealth.
It is the responsibility of the person using the CAPAD dataset to always check the metadata for the currency date within each jurisdiction and if required seek advice from the individual agencies on details of more recent gazettals of protected areas.
Due to privacy issues in relation to some covenants on private lands, these data in some jurisdictions are not included in the spatial data, but are included in the published CAPAD summary statistics. The National Reserve System Section can advise in which bioregions this is likely to be an issue.

Previous versions of CAPAD marine information have been published in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area: "A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values." For more information please refer to the CAPAD Technical Specification document.CAPAD 2020 Attributes:PA_ID: A unique code for the protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. Gazetted PAs with no name are flagged as "Unnamed" with a reserve number. e.g. Unnamed HA1207.TYPE: The type of protected area according to the establishment mechanism. eg.
