In 2021, most of the car buyers in the United States self-identified as white. This included both the new and used car markets, where this ethnic group made up over four-fifths of the buyers. Contrastingly, respondents self-identifying as Hispanic made up 12 percent of the new car buyers.

This data set provides a count and percentage of the number of cars owned by households sampled in obtaining data for the ACT Household Travel Survey. This shows the number of vehicles that were registered by Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) each month. The data is separated by county for passenger vehicles and trucks. DOL integrates National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel efficiency ratings with DOL titling and registration data to create this information.

The car owner's statistics by vehicle type and gender

There is a sharp increase in vehicle ownership once income surpasses 50,000 U.S. dollars. The high running costs of owning a car makes it very difficult for low income earners to have their own vehicle. The annual salary of those in the lowest income group shown would not cover the cost of the average second hand car.

This table contains figures on traffic performance (vehicle-kilometres) of passenger cars, delivery vans, lorries, semi-trailers, special purpose vehicles and buses. Vehicle-kilometres of Dutch vehicles have been broken down by Dutch vehicles on Dutch territory and Dutch vehicles on foreign territory.

In addition, there are figures on the total distance covered on Dutch territory. A distinction is made between kilometres covered by Dutch vehicles and kilometres by foreign vehicles.

The vehicle population used to estimate the kilometres is based on the vehicle fleet statistics. The population of the figures in this table is based on the new selection method of the vehicle fleet. The difference between the old and the new selection method is described in a methodological report, see paragraph 4. The data series of vehicle kilometres estimated for the new population is available starting from 2018. The data series based on the old population ends with 2020. The way in which the vehicle kilometres are estimated has not changed, only the population.

For the 2020 data a correction factor was implemented to correct for the ‘smoothing effect’ caused by the method. The smoothing effect smoothes out yearly variation in the data and this results in a distorted picture of periods of time when mobility patterns suddenly change drastically, like happened in 2020 due to COVID-19.

The Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) is conducted in partnership with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Department of Energy to better understand the characteristics and use of trucks on our nation's roads. The survey universe for the VIUS includes all private and commercial trucks registered (or licensed) in the United States. This includes: pickups; minivans, other light vans, and sport utility vehicles; other light single-unit trucks (GVW = 26,000 lbs.); and truck tractors. The VIUS sample excludes vehicles owned by federal, state, and local governments; ambulances; buses; motor homes; farm tractors; unpowered trailer units; and trucks reported to have been disposed of prior to January 1 of the survey year. VIUS provides data on the physical and operational characteristics of the nation's truck population. Its primary goal is to produce estimates of the total number of trucks and truck miles. This dataset provides national and state-level summary statistics for in-scope vehicles, excluding pickups, SUVs, minivans, and other light vans, that were in use.

The data set contains registered vehicle population count by various criteria such as vehicle class, vehicle status, vechicle make, vehicle model, vehicle year, plate class, plate declaration, county, weight related class and other vehicle decriptors.

Outright car purchase is becoming less popular among consumers in the United States, according to a July 2023 survey. Over half of respondents mentioned their current vehicle had been an outright purchase, but just over 40 percent considered it likely that they would obtain their next car through the same ownership method. In contrast, car subscriptions and car leasing represented a slightly higher share of future ownership compared to current ownership.
