    Description

The Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) is conducted in partnership with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Department of Energy to better understand the characteristics and use of trucks on our nation's roads. The survey universe for the VIUS includes all private and commercial trucks registered (or licensed) in the United States. This includes: pickups; minivans, other light vans, and sport utility vehicles; other light single-unit trucks (GVW = 26,000 lbs.); and truck tractors. The VIUS sample excludes vehicles owned by federal, state, and local governments; ambulances; buses; motor homes; farm tractors; unpowered trailer units; and trucks reported to have been disposed of prior to January 1 of the survey year. VIUS provides data on the physical and operational characteristics of the nation's truck population. Its primary goal is to produce estimates of the total number of trucks and truck miles. This dataset provides national and state-level summary statistics for in-scope vehicles that were in use.

    Description

As of November 2023, it would have taken over 128 days for the Jeep vehicle stock to run out in the United States, with sales remaining constant. The brand was followed by Infiniti, which counted some 120 days of supply. By contrast, Toyota and Honda recorded the lowest supplies, at 32 and 40 days of supply respectively. Supply and demand The issue of supply and demand in the automotive industry during the last few years has been nothing but dynamic. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer needs shifted and there was a sharp drop in light vehicle sales. Although sales increased from 14.5 million in 2020 to 15.5 million units in 2023, they were still below pre-pandemic levels. During this period, motor vehicle production had almost fully recovered from pre-pandemic dips, reaching about 10.6 million units in 2023. The light vehicle sales do not account for all motor vehicles sold, and even then, as both sales and vehicle production rose, production still could not account for all the rising demand. This is further indicated by an inventory-to-sales ratio of about 0.65 in the U.S. automotive industry at the start of 2023. In the face of production disruptions and shifting consumer desires, alternatives such as electric vehicles have gained popularity.
The allure of electricity Prior to the pandemic in 2020, there were already many concerns regarding the CO2 emissions caused by motor vehicles. As of 2023, the share of the transportation sector in the overall CO2 emissions of the US was greater than any other source. Further after the pandemic in 2020, gas prices began to climb. Due to the mounting pressures, the popularity of electric vehicles began to grow, shifting motor vehicle production to cater to this increased popularity. This is seen in ever increasing global electric vehicle sales.

    Description

This dataset details vehicle types and ages for transit agencies reporting to the National Transit Database in the 2022 and 2023 report years. Vehicle types describe the vehicles employed in direct operation or support of transit service.

NTD Data Tables organize and summarize data from the 2022 and 2023 National Transit Database in a manner that is more useful for quick reference and summary analysis. This dataset is based on the 2022 and 2023 Revenue Vehicle Inventory and Service Vehicle Inventory database files.

Rural reporters that operate in more than one state report their vehicles in only one of their states.

In years 2015-2021, you can find this data in the "Vehicles" data table on NTD Program website, at https://transit.dot.gov/ntd/ntd-data.

If you have any other questions about this table, please contact the NTD Help Desk at NTDHelp@dot.gov.
