    Description

As of January 2022, approximately ***** million motor vehicles were registered in Australia, the majority of which were passenger vehicles. The source also revealed that New South Wales was the leading state in terms of vehicle registrations that year, accounting for almost ** percent of Australia’s total registered vehicles. The future of electric vehicle (EV) in Australia? As personal cars remain Australia’s prominent means of transportation, electric vehicles, a cleaner alternative, propose a potential solution to help the country cut down emissions from cars, which are projected to reach nearly ** million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030. Whereas EV sales in Australia have seen growth for the past decade, the EV market share was minimal, accounting for less than *** percent of Australian automotive market in 2020. From the perspective of Australian consumers Nonetheless, Australia’s low electric vehicle uptake does not seem to mirror public interest. Many Australian consumers have switched to electric vehicles for their lower environmental footprint compared to conventional fuel vehicles. While EV initial purchase costs may have refrained consumers from buying, their lower running and maintenance costs, which prove to be more beneficial in the long run, also appeal to many Australians. On the other hand, government incentives, such as subsidies and policies regarding charging infrastructure will also likely encourage EV consumption and thus help smooth the transition to electric vehicles.

That year, the number of passenger vehicles in Australia amounted to approximately ***** million. Light commercial vehicles, which accounted for about **** million, came next. Vehicle industry in Australia In recent times, Australia's automotive sector has experienced notable transformations. Global trends are reflected in the market's increasing popularity of SUVs and electric automobiles. Australia saw ***** electric car sales in the first half of 2021, demonstrating an impressive level of resilience in electric vehicle sales in the face of the ongoing worldwide coronavirus pandemic and overall trends in new vehicle sales. Furthermore, environmental concerns have impacted the car industry, resulting in an increased emphasis on emission limits and the integration of cleaner technologies. Projected car emissions in Australia are expected to decrease from approximately ** million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030 to ** million in 2035. Overall, transport emissions are also set to slightly decrease from *** million metric tons in 2030 to ** million in 2035. Australian electric vehicle sector For several reasons, the switch to electric vehicles has been gaining popularity in Australia. Many people are choosing electric vehicles as they become more aware of their carbon footprint and want to lessen their reliance on fossil fuels and air pollution. The increasing availability of charging infrastructure across the country also makes EVs a practical and viable option for many Australians. Investments in public electric vehicle charging infrastructure persist, and the number of charging stations has experienced substantial growth since 2020.

    Description

The Automotive industry has endured unpredictable conditions over the past five years. Companies throughout the industry, including manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and repairers, downsized operations after pandemic restrictions caused temporary facility closures. Global supply chain disruptions led to shortages of critical inputs, particularly semiconductors. Reduced motor vehicle imports amid these disruptions weakened wholesalers' and retailers’ sales. However, on the back of these disruptions, demand for motor vehicles surpassed supply over the three years through 2022-23, enabling wholesalers and retailers to pass on inflated costs to consumers through heightened motor vehicle prices, supporting the industry. Strong uptake of EVs and the recent shift in consumer preferences towards SUVs and EVs have helped industry businesses recover their profit margins by catering towards these trends. This also supported the industry’s recovery from severe semiconductor supply shortages, elevating industry revenue over the two years through 2023-24. Intense competition in the Automotive industry has encouraged more companies to pursue differentiation strategies. Competitively priced imports have increased while industry exports have dipped, pressuring manufacturers to sustain revenue and profit by manufacturing value-added products to avoid price wars. Stable growth in the domestic freight task has supported sales for industry companies, from manufacturers of components, parts and accessories to truck and bus producers to repairers. Fluctuating consumer sentiment and real household discretionary income have been constraining the industry’s performance, contributing to an anticipated 0.8% revenue slip in 2024-25. Overall, revenue is expected to have climbed at an annualised 1.4% over the five years through 2024-25 to $183.4 billion. An improving trading landscape is set to stimulate the Automotive industry. Easing cost-of-living pressures and rising real household discretionary income will raise revenue from households. A forecast hike in imports can benefit wholesalers and retailers, while a rebound in exports will help elevate manufacturers’ sales. Ongoing electric vehicle uptake is set to fuel new vehicle purchases, supporting forecast annualised growth in revenue of 1.5% over the five years through 2029-30 to $198.0 billion.

    Description

The Motor Vehicle Manufacturing industry has suffered from a turbulent economy over the past few years. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global supply chain and global semiconductor chip shortages have slowed production. Motor vehicle manufacturers have faced intense competition from low-cost imports. Continuous growth in Australia’s domestic freight task has supported motor vehicle manufacturers’ sales, yet the shrinking Australian motor vehicle market has eroded industry revenue. Motor vehicle manufacturers enjoyed robust sales in 2022-23 thanks to pent-up demand and recovering global supply chains. However, business confidence and consumer sentiment have since weakened, weighing on motor vehicle sales. Overall, revenue is expected to have decreased at an annualised 1.1% over the five years through 2024-25, to $5.4 billion. Despite the difficult operating conditions, major manufacturers like Volvo and PACCAR have displayed strong sales in the heavy-duty vehicles segment and continue to dominate the industry. Commodity prices like crude oil, as well as raw material costs including steel and rubber, have fluctuated, elevating manufacturers’ purchase costs. Industry profit has climbed over the past five years thanks to solid demand, technological advancements and economic recovery following the pandemic. Motor vehicle manufacturers' revenue is expected to drop by 0.6% in 2024-25 in the wake of weak business confidence because of interest hikes and slowed economic growth. In the coming years, an expansion in the domestic freight task and recovering business confidence is set to raise the Motor Vehicle Manufacturing industry’s revenue. Revenue is anticipated to climb at an annualised 1.4% over the five years through 2029-30, to total $5.7 billion. Growing public concern over environmental issues is set to accelerate the shift towards vehicles with lower emissions, like electric vehicles. Manufacturers that embrace growing sustainability trends may boost sales by attracting new, eco-conscious customers.

    Description

The Motor Vehicle Wholesaling industry has endured turbulent conditions over recent years, primarily because of global supply chain disruptions triggered by the pandemic. International automobile production slowed with shortages of key inputs, like microprocessors, limiting the volume of cars wholesalers could import and distribute to dealerships. However, high levels of government stimulus in 2020-21 strengthened real household discretionary income, and a low cash rate reduced borrowing costs for major purchases like cars. Meanwhile, international travel restrictions encouraged consumers to redirect unused holiday funds towards domestic luxuries and local trips that require motor vehicles. With a shortage of new cars on the market, spending drifted towards used cars instead. Overall, industry revenue is expected to plunge at an annualised 6.0% over the five years through 2024-25, to $34.5 billion, as the heightened cost of living limits demand. This includes a 2.8% dip in revenue in 2024-25, driven by weakened consumer demand. With consumer demand for cars surpassing supply during the pandemic, wholesalers could pass on increased costs to dealerships. These higher car prices were then passed on to consumers. Bigger models like SUVs carry higher margins, and domestic consumers have demonstrated a healthy appetite for these vehicles, which has helped wholesalers improve profitability. Sales of electric vehicles (EVs), including plug-in hybrids, have boomed. Government incentives and improving EV charging infrastructure have accelerated EV uptake in Australia. An expanding range of EV models and brands in the Australian market has strengthened consumer interest, supporting demand from dealerships for these vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Wholesaling industry is forecast to expand as the supply of new vehicles improves and EV uptake accelerates. A climb in motor vehicle prices may weigh on customers' willingness to purchase cars. However, a return to positive consumer sentiment and higher discretionary income may reinforce sales. Overall, revenue is forecast to climb at an annualised 1.3% through 2029-30 to $36.7 billion.
