    Description

The Surveying and Mapping Services industry in Canada has weathered uncertain conditions as downstream industries including residential, commercial, industrial construction and government authorities, fared with volatility brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry's performance is largely tied to developments in residential and nonresidential construction markets, which fuel both private- and public-sector spending. As Canadian oil, gas and mining companies cut back spending on exploration and development projects in response to falling commodity prices, and construction stalled in resource-rich provinces, demand for surveying and mapping services for these projects fell. While growth from the residential construction market helped offset some losses, rising interest intended to offset rising inflation have hampered residential demand. Thus, even as energy prices came roaring back, many surveyors saw a reduction in demand. Over the five years to 2023, industry revenue has been contracting at a CAGR of 1.7% and is expected to reach $1.7 billion, including an expected drop of 3.2% over the current year. The return to growth of downstream construction markets will likely keep industry demand afloat moving forward. In addition to solid demand from industrial building construction as commodity prices remain high, housing market expansion will stimulate demand for cadastral, property line and construction surveying. The continued adoption of new technology will also enable companies to realize new efficiencies and improve the quality of their services, expanding sizable profit margins further. Industry revenue is forecast to rise at a CAGR of 1.2% to $1.8 billion over the five years to 2028.

    Description

Revenue for the Surveying and Mapping Services industry has been volatile in the years since the pandemic. As the economy emerged from a short-lived downturn, surveyors were buoyed by strong residential construction resulting from record-low interest rates. Investment from the commercial sector also expanded as corporate profit soared. However, as the Federal Reserve raised the cost of borrowing to combat high inflation, homebuying and existing home improvements declined, severely inhibiting the residential sector and prompting a multi-year revenue decline for the industry. While interest rates have remained elevated, the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has pumped millions of dollars into highway construction, civil engineering, mineral surveying and geospatial data processing, rewarding select surveying and mapping companies with hefty contracts. Thus, industry revenue is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 2.0% through 2025, even as interest rates remain elevated. In 2025, the industry is projected to grow 1.8% with revenue totalling $11.5 billion.Advances in technology are revolutionizing surveying by enabling faster, more accurate data collection and processing. Mobile mapping tools, UAVs, 3D laser scanning and AI-driven analytics are streamlining workflows, reducing field time and expanding the range of services companies offer. These innovations are supporting complex projects in construction, infrastructure and smart city planning, while cloud-based GIS and automation are improving productivity. As these tools are becoming industry standards, companies that have been quick to adopt them have gained a competitive edge. This increased competition has left laggards behind, making innovation incumbent to sustaining profitability. The industry will continue to see modest expansion as steady economic growth will increase demand from the nonresidential sector. However, economic uncertainty and the expectation of conservative monetary policy by the Federal Reserve will continue to keep interest rates elevated, tempering the residential housing market. Still, surveyors will benefit from new home construction that is expected to rise above historical averages, especially in regions where job growth will support relocation. Through 2030, industry revenue is forecast to expand at a CAGR of 1.1% to reach $12.2 billion.

    Description

Companies in the Surveying and Mapping Services industry have struggled with volatile downstream demand over the past few years. Demand for surveying services fluctuates in response to construction activity, as surveyors are a necessity for construction projects. Although demand for surveying services has risen in areas like heavy and civil engineering construction, as well as exploration, these gains haven’t been enough to counterbalance a drop in demand from residential building construction. Slow growth in the number of surveyors has constrained the market’s size, as more experienced surveyors are retiring while fewer young people are interested in pursuing surveying as a career. Overall, revenue is expected to have contracted at an annualised 3.9% over the five years through 2024-25 to $4.0 billion, including an anticipated plummet of 7.1% in 2024-25. Technological advancements in surveying and mapping services have influenced the industry’s performance. Cost-effective drone surveying technology with fast processing speeds has allowed some companies to provide value-added products that appeal to time-sensitive clients. However, some downstream clients with large capital resources have bypassed third-party surveying service providers, even though they can offer specialised services, and developed in-house surveying capabilities for cost efficiency, limiting surveyors’ pricing ability. Some large-scale surveyors have capitalised on a flurry of high-profile projects to build stronger reputations and expand their market share. Over the coming years, a recovery in key downstream sectors, including residential housing construction, as interest rates ease will improve the industry’s performance. As softening interest rates improve downstream conditions, surveyors working in construction markets will be in a better position to capitalise on improved downstream conditions. Investment in apartment and townhouse construction will also rally, driven by government efforts to solve housing supply shortages over the coming years. Industry revenue is projected to climb at an annualised 2.2% over the five years through 2029-30 to $4.1 billion.

description: Minnesota's original public land survey plat maps were created between 1848 and 1907 during the first government land survey of the state by the U.S. Surveyor General's Office. This collection of more than 3,600 maps includes later General Land Office (GLO) and Bureau of Land Management maps up through 2001. Scanned images of the maps are available in several digital formats and most have been georeferenced. The survey plat maps, and the accompanying survey field notes, serve as the fundamental legal records for real estate in Minnesota; all property titles and descriptions stem from them. They also are an essential resource for surveyors and provide a record of the state's physical geography prior to European settlement. Finally, they testify to many years of hard work by the surveying community, often under very challenging conditions. The deteriorating physical condition of the older maps (drawn on paper, linen, and other similar materials) and the need to provide wider public access to the maps, made handling the original records increasingly impractical. To meet this challenge, the Office of the Secretary of State (SOS), the State Archives of the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS), the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), MnGeo (formerly the Land Management Information Center - LMIC) and the Minnesota Association of County Surveyors collaborated in a digitization project which produced high quality (800 dpi), 24-bit color images of the maps in standard TIFF, JPEG and PDF formats - nearly 1.5 terabytes of data. Funding was provided by MnDOT. In 2010-11, most of the JPEG plat map images were georeferenced. The intent was to locate the plat images to coincide with statewide geographic data without appreciably altering (warping) the image. This increases the value of the images in mapping software where they can be used as a background layer.; abstract: Minnesota's original public land survey plat maps were created between 1848 and 1907 during the first government land survey of the state by the U.S. Surveyor General's Office. Description

Taken from sections of the Report:

The purpose of the 1998/99 Antarctic survey season was to provide survey control around Davis, Beaver Lake and the Prince Charles Mountains in support of the ANARE mapping program (ANAREMAGIP) as well as providing survey support for other ANARE science programs.

Surveyors Matt King and Rachael Manson from the Centre for Spatial Information Science, University of Tasmania, already travelling to Davis as part of a ASAC project, were appointed as surveyors for the 1998/99 season.

The Royal Australian Army provided Cartographer/Surveyor Lee Palfrey to assist with the survey program in the Davis region.

The Antarctic Division's Brief to Surveyors which outlines the details of the program is included in Appendix A. The survey program consisted of the following major areas:

    • Photo control

      • Vestfold Hills (Platcha, Ellis Narrows and Marine Plain)

      • Larsemann Hills

      • Beaver Lake, Pagodroma Gorge and Soyuz station

    • Field checking of photogrammetric plotting

      • Davis station digital map

      • Vestfold Hills

      • Larsemann Hills

    • Providing GPS coordinates for all uncoordinated survey marks in the Vestfold Hills.

    • Completion of various tasks relating to the Davis tide gauge

      • Downloading and retrieval of the existing tide gauge at Davis.

      • Installation of the new tide gauge at Davis.

      • Timed water-level measurements.

      • Precise levelling connection of the tide gauge bench marks with the ARGN GPS site at Davis.

      • Third order levelling to connect the current tide gauge bench marks to those previously used by the Royal Australian Navy.*

    • Lake levels within the Vestfold Hills.

    • Installation of a new tide pole for Deep Lake.

    • Engineering surveys at Davis

    • Aerial photography of penguin colonies along the coast near Davis.*

    • These tasks were not included in the original brief but were carried out at the request of the Mapping Officer during the season.

Flight lines and photo centres representing the aerial photography of penguin colonies were later created in the Australian Antarctic Data Centre. This data has Dataset_id 24 and is included in the the aerial photography data available for download (see URL below).

GIS data was also created from data resulting from Matt King's survey of some features at Davis. The features include a fuel tank, some aerials, some electrical cables, some buildings, the SHIRE box (Physics apparatus) and a concrete pad. This GIS data has Dataset_id 24 and is included in the Davis GIS data available for download (see URL below).

    Recommendations

Several recommendations can be made from our experiences over the summer.

We recommend a complete inventory of all GPS base station observations be taken and summarised. After observing NMVS 4, HBM 1 and HBM 2 we found that these marks had already been observed during the 1997/98 season (Note: the latitude of NMVS4 is listed incorrectly on page 24 of the 1997/98 report). It has been proposed by the Mapping Officer that all GPS data over 2 hours in length be made available on CDROM in the future.

We further recommend that the various height datums in use in the Vestfold Hills be combined into the one datum. A least-squares adjustment of all height measurements made in the region would be a reasonably simple process (if all the data can be found!).

It is our understanding that the current differential GPS transmitter (for real time GPS corrections) at Davis is of poor quality and broadcasts broadband noise, interfering with other radio sources. As a result, the communications technicians are loathe to place the transmitter on a large antenna tower, thus significantly limiting the usefulness of real time differential GPS at Davis. If it is envisaged that real-time GPS corrections will be required in the future at Davis (or even the Vestfold Hills), this transmitter will need to be replaced.

It is widely held around station that significant errors exist in the current 1:50000 Vestfold Hills map. We are glad to hear that a new generation map is nearing completion.

Having used the Davis Science digital camera during the season, we recommend that a digital camera be regarded as an essential component of future mapping programs. It may prove beneficial if ANAREMAGIP were to purchase such a camera.

    Description

Background and Data Limitations The Massachusetts 1830 map series represents a unique data source that depicts land cover and cultural features during the historical period of widespread land clearing for agricultural. To our knowledge, Massachusetts is the only state in the US where detailed land cover information was comprehensively mapped at such an early date. As a result, these maps provide unusual insight into land cover and cultural patterns in 19th century New England. However, as with any historical data, the limitations and appropriate uses of these data must be recognized: (1) These maps were originally developed by many different surveyors across the state, with varying levels of effort and accuracy. (2) It is apparent that original mapping did not follow consistent surveying or drafting protocols; for instance, no consistent minimum mapping unit was identified or used by different surveyors; as a result, whereas some maps depict only large forest blocks, others also depict small wooded areas, suggesting that numerous smaller woodlands may have gone unmapped in many towns. Surveyors also were apparently not consistent in what they mapped as ‘woodlands’: comparison with independently collected tax valuation data from the same time period indicates substantial lack of consistency among towns in the relative amounts of ‘woodlands’, ‘unimproved’ lands, and ‘unimproveable’ lands that were mapped as ‘woodlands’ on the 1830 maps. In some instances, the lack of consistent mapping protocols resulted in substantially different patterns of forest cover being depicted on maps from adjoining towns that may in fact have had relatively similar forest patterns or in woodlands that ‘end’ at a town boundary. (3) The degree to which these maps represent approximations of ‘primary’ woodlands (i.e., areas that were never cleared for agriculture during the historical period, but were generally logged for wood products) varies considerably from town to town, depending on whether agricultural land clearing peaked prior to, during, or substantially after 1830. (4) Despite our efforts to accurately geo-reference and digitize these maps, a variety of additional sources of error were introduced in converting the mapped information to electronic data files (see detailed methods below). Thus, we urge considerable caution in interpreting these maps. Despite these limitations, the 1830 maps present an incredible wealth of information about land cover patterns and cultural features during the early 19th century, a period that continues to exert strong influence on the natural and cultural landscapes of the region.
