The consumption of cement in the United States has steadily increased over the past decade, reaching an estimated 110 million metric tons in 2024. Similarly, cement prices in the U.S. have also increased in recent years, amounting to 160 U.S. dollars per metric ton that same year. Cement consumption is often heavily linked to the demand from the construction industry. U.S. cement production The production of cement in the United States was estimated at 86 million metric tons in 2024. Despite having registered a decrease from the previous year, cement production in the North American country has been on a mostly upward trend since 2010. Over the last decade, production figures reached a high of 91.2 million metric tons in 2022. What is cement? Cement is a powdery substance made from a combination of limestone, clay, shale, sand, and iron ore. Rarely used on its own, when mixed with water and aggregates – such as sand, gravel, or crushed stone – it serves as a binding agent, forming a paste that hardens to produce mortar or concrete. The most commonly used cement in construction is Portland cement, which is a type of hydraulic cement. While hydraulic cement sets in the presence of water, non-hydraulic cement does not set in wet conditions, but through a process of carbonation which involves exposure to CO₂ from the air. China has by far the largest cement production capacity in the world, with the U.S. ranking in fourth place.

In 2024, approximately 110 million metric tons of cement were shipped to final customers in the United States. This represents a 55 percent increase compared to 2010 when the amount shipped stood at 71 million metric tons of cement. Cement pricing and production dynamics Along with shipments, the cement prices showed an increasing trend, reaching an estimated 160 U.S. dollars per metric ton in 2024. This price point is the highest in recent years, surpassing pre-recession levels and demonstrating the industry's economic recovery. The U.S. maintains a strong domestic production capacity of Portland and masonry cement, with an estimated 86 million metric tons in 2024. Despite the high production capacity, the country still relies on imports, with hydraulic cement imports totalling 24 million metric tons in the same year. Cement industry structure and employment Major players in the industry include Lehigh Hanson, a subsidiary of Heidelberg Cement, which operated 19 cement production plants in the U.S. as of 2023, and Holcim, a Swiss company, with 13 plants. The industry's growth is also reflected in its workforce, with an estimated 13,000 people employed in cement production in 2024, marking the highest employment figure in recent years.
