    Description

Cement production reached an estimated ** million metric tons in the United States in 2024, the lowest production volume since 2017. That same year, **** billion metric tons of cement was produced worldwide. Concrete vs cement Cement is manufactured through the high temperature heating of materials like silica, alumina, and iron, which results in a material called “clinker”, which is then ground and mixed with limestone and gypsum to produce concrete. Concrete is essentially a mix of aggregates (sand and gravel or crushed stone) and paste (water and cement). Portland cement is a generic term to describe the type of cement used in almost all concretes. Cement production in the United States The production of cement clinker in the U.S. reached about ** million metric tons in 2024. Overall, U.S. cement production remains under the 2005 record due to idle production plants, underutilized capacity at other plants, disruptions due to plant improvements, as well as the decreased costs of importing cement.

    Description

The total volume of cement production worldwide amounted to an estimated ************ tons in 2024. Back in 1995, the total global production of cement amounted to just **** billion tons, an indication of the extent to which the construction industry has grown since then. Leading cement producers China was by far the leading cement producing country in 2024, with production reaching nearly *** billion metric tons. India ranked a distant second that year, producing *** million metric tons. Unsurprisingly, Chinese and Indian firms are among the leading cement manufacturers in terms of revenue, however the Swiss based company Holcim topped the list in 2024. Cement industry emissions The production of cement requires the heating of a mixture of minerals to temperatures of more than 1400 degrees Celsius in a kiln. This step requires vast amounts of energy, which makes cement production one of the leading causes of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Carbon dioxide emissions from cement production have increased nearly continuously for several decades, reaching **** billion metric tons in 2023.

    Description

The consumption of cement in the United States has steadily increased over the past decade, reaching an estimated *** million metric tons in 2024. Similarly, cement prices in the U.S. have also increased in recent years, amounting to *** U.S. dollars per metric ton that same year. Cement consumption is often heavily linked to the demand from the construction industry. U.S. cement production The production of cement in the United States was estimated at ** million metric tons in 2024. Despite having registered a decrease from the previous year, cement production in the North American country has been on a mostly upward trend since 2010. Over the last decade, production figures reached a high of **** million metric tons in 2022. What is cement? Cement is a powdery substance made from a combination of limestone, clay, shale, sand, and iron ore. Rarely used on its own, when mixed with water and aggregates – such as sand, gravel, or crushed stone – it serves as a binding agent, forming a paste that hardens to produce mortar or concrete. The most commonly used cement in construction is Portland cement, which is a type of hydraulic cement. While hydraulic cement sets in the presence of water, non-hydraulic cement does not set in wet conditions, but through a process of carbonation which involves exposure to CO₂ from the air. China has by far the largest cement production capacity in the world, with the U.S. ranking in fourth place.

Different types of cement In 2024, the United States' imports of hydraulic cement amounted to ** million metric tons. One of the most common types of hydraulic cement is known as Portland cement. It is used in concrete, mortar, stucco, as well as grout. The U.S. produced an estimated ** million metric tons of Portland cement and masonry cement in 2024. Cement price recovery from the great recession In 2016, cement prices finally surpassed pre-recession prices, which was about *** U.S. dollars per metric ton the year prior to the global recession. By 2024, U.S. cement had increased further to an estimated price of *** U.S. dollars per metric ton. The cement price per ton relies heavily on demand from the construction industry. Global cement production may reach as much as *** billion metric tons by 2050. In 2023, France’s Saint-Gobain, one of the leading manufacturers of construction materials worldwide, reported sales totaling nearly ** billion U.S. dollars.

In July 2025, China produced about *** million metric tons of cement, around **** percent less than in the same period of 2024.The cement leaderAs a common construction material that is used to bind other materials together, cement belongs to the essential materials that make modern life possible. Few construction projects can take place without the use of cement. Cement is especially important for fast-growing economies. Since 2000, China's cement production had experienced a remarkable growth. In 2010, the second-largest economy in the world accounted for more than half of global cement production. China has by far the largest cement industry in the world. The driving forcesThe explosive growth in cement production correlates with China’s economic expansion. While industrialization and urbanization advanced in the country, the demand of cement rose sharply. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the net output of the construction industry grew constantly in the previous decade. Houses, roads and bridges had been built here with phenomenal speed over the past three decades. Infrastructure is the keySince extensive roads and railways are indispensable for a modern economy, installing and upgrading physical infrastructure were intensive n China. Over the last decade, the total length of public roads in China was expanding gradually. A major benefit, particularly for rural areas, has been the modernization of domestic transportation infrastructure. To counteract sluggish economic growth, Chinese local and central government also boosted public investment on infrastructure.
