    Description

The Economic Census is the U.S. Government's official five-year measure of American business and the economy. It is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, and response is required by law. In October through December of the census year, forms are sent out to nearly 4 million businesses, including large, medium and small companies representing all U.S. locations and industries. Respondents were asked to provide a range of operational and performance data for their companies. This dataset presents company, establishments, value of shipments, value of product shipments, percentage of product shipments of the total value of shipments, and percentage of distribution of value of product shipments.

This layer contains data on the number of establishments, total employment, and total annual payroll for for 20 selected 4- and 5-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. This is shown by county and state boundaries. The full CBP data set (available at census.gov) is updated annually to contain the most currently released CBP data. This layer is symbolized to show the total number of establishments depicted by size, and the average annual pay per employee, depicted by color.

    Current Vintage: 2017

About this Program Data Technical Documentation News & Updates

This ready-to-use layer can be used within ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, its configurable apps, dashboards, Story Maps, custom apps, and mobile apps. Data can also be exported for offline workflows. Please cite the Census Bureau and CBP when using this data.

Data Processing Notes: Boundaries come from the US Census Bureau TIGER geodatabases. Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census Bureau. These are Census Bureau boundaries with water and/or coastlines clipped for cartographic purposes. For census tracts, the water cutouts are derived from a subset of the 2010 AWATER (Area Water) boundaries offered by TIGER. For state and county boundaries, the water and coastlines are derived from the coastlines of the 500k TIGER Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles. The original AWATER and ALAND fields are still available as attributes within the data table (units are square meters). The States layer contains 56 records - all US states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Island Areas Blank values represent industries where there either were no businesses in that industry and that geography OR industries where the data had to be withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual companies. Users should visit data.census.gov or Census Business Builder for more details on these withheld records.

    Description

The FR 3033p is the first part of a two-stage survey series, which has been conducted at regular five-year intervals since 1955. It is a census survey designed to identify the universe of finance companies eligible for potential inclusion in the FR 3033s. It gathers limited information including total assets, areas of specialization, and information on the corporate structure of such companies. The second part of these information collections, the FR 3033s, collects balance sheet data on major categories of consumer and business credit receivables and major liabilities, along with income and expenses, and is used to gather information on the scope of a company's operations and loan and lease servicing activities. In addition, additional questions were added to collect lending information related to the COVID-19 impacts.

The Annual Business Survey (ABS) provides information on selected economic and demographic characteristics for businesses and business owners by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status. Further, the survey measures research and development (for microbusinesses), new business topics such as innovation and technology, as well as other business characteristics. The U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center conduct the ABS jointly for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation. The ABS replaces the five-year Survey of Business Owners (SBO) for employer businesses, the Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE), the Business R&D and Innovation for Microbusinesses survey (BRDI-M), and the innovation section of the Business R&D and Innovation Survey (BRDI-S). https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/abs.html

    Description

Since the passing of the 1953 Title 13 U.S. Code, Congress gave the Census Bureau authority to conduct an economic census every 5 years on years that end in a 2 or 7. This code mandated that all economic firms must provide requested information, and it required the Bureau to maintain the confidentiality of the individual records. Respondents are asked to provide a range of operational and performance data for their companies. This collection is compiled from publicly available U.S. Census Bureau data and publications. This data comes from a mix of digitized paper documents, CD-ROMs/Floppy discs, now-discontinued FTP servers, and the US Census Bureau website. However, this data is not a complete sample of the US economic census. This collection has variables related to the type of establishment, year, business sector, payroll, number of employees, number of firms, and shipments. Some inquiries apply to some industries but not others, such as materials consumed and franchising
