The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Face refers to the areal (polygon) topological primitives that make up MTDB. A face is bounded by one or more edges; its boundary includes only the edges that separate it from other faces, not any interior edges contained within the area of the face. The Topological Faces Shapefile contains the attributes of each topological primitive face. Each face has a unique topological face identifier (TFID) value. Each face in the shapefile includes the key geographic area codes for all geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data for both the 2020 Census and the annual estimates and surveys. Population data shows increasing whereas the poverty data shows decreasing in Los Angeles County from 2000 census to 2020 census. This population Dashboard is created to display and visualize the population change in LA County during three decennial censuses 2000, 2010 and 2020.How population and poverty data by city and community are created?For population data, block centroids of 2000, 2010 and 2020 census blocks were intersected with the current city and community boundaries, and block-based population were aggregated by the current city and community boundaries. For poverty rate tract-based poverty data were extracted from ACS 5-YR Summary file, allocated to blocks by multiplying a tract-to-block allocation factor, and aggregated by the current city and community boundaries. These population and population below poverty level (below 100% FPL) data are based on current city/community boundaries and are created for general comparison purpose only. In preparation for the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, test censuses were conducted in central Los Angeles County and in east central Mississippi in order to test census procedures in representative urban and rural settings. Several goals were identified for the 1986 test censuses including (1) the examination of new techniques for automating questionnaire processing, (2) the production of maps from an automated geographic database, (3) the testing of a new questionnaire design, and (4) a review of adjustment methodology. This data collection offers complete-count data for central Los Angeles County on race and Spanish origin for total persons and for those 18 years and over.

The Census Designated Places 2020 (CDP 2020) boundary usually is defined by the Census Bureau in cooperation with state, local or tribal officials. The boundaries are updated prior to each decennial census. These boundaries, which usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity boundary, have no legal status, nor do these places have officials elected to serve traditional municipal functions. CDP boundaries may change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary. CDPs must be contained within a single state and may not extend into an incorporated place. There are no population size requirements for CDPs. incorporatedCDP data is download from Census Bureau's TIGER 2020 website (https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TIGER2020/PLACE/) and extracted for Los Angeles County. This data includes LA County 88 incorporated cities and 54 CDPs.

So the CT10 field actually reflects the 2012 Census update, which is used for all population products 2012 and later.How was this data created?This data was downloaded from Census Bureau website: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/shapefiles2010/file-download and clipped to the County Boundary using ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop. Two new fields were added in census tract data – area in square feet and shape length in feet. This dataset has unique identifier field “GEOID10” for each record and the census tract number fields “CT10” and “LABEL” (6-digit number and 6-digit number with decimal point, respectively).
