    Description

    The Bureau of the Census has released Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1) 100-Percent data. The file includes the following population items: sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and household and family characteristics. Housing items include occupancy status and tenure (whether the unit is owner or renter occupied). SF1 does not include information on incomes, poverty status, overcrowded housing or age of housing. These topics will be covered in Summary File 3. Data are available for states, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, block groups, and, where applicable, American Indian and Alaskan Native Areas and Hawaiian Home Lands. The SF1 data are available on the Bureau's web site and may be retrieved from American FactFinder as tables, lists, or maps. Users may also download a set of compressed ASCII files for each state via the Bureau's FTP server. There are over 8000 data items available for each geographic area. The full listing of these data items is available here as a downloadable compressed data base file named TABLES.ZIP. The uncompressed is in FoxPro data base file (dbf) format and may be imported to ACCESS, EXCEL, and other software formats. While all of this information is useful, the Office of Community Planning and Development has downloaded selected information for all states and areas and is making this information available on the CPD web pages. The tables and data items selected are those items used in the CDBG and HOME allocation formulas plus topics most pertinent to the Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS), the Consolidated Plan, and similar overall economic and community development plans. The information is contained in five compressed (zipped) dbf tables for each state. When uncompressed the tables are ready for use with FoxPro and they can be imported into ACCESS, EXCEL, and other spreadsheet, GIS and database software. The data are at the block group summary level. The first two characters of the file name are the state abbreviation. The next two letters are BG for block group. Each record is labeled with the code and name of the city and county in which it is located so that the data can be summarized to higher-level geography. The last part of the file name describes the contents . The GEO file contains standard Census Bureau geographic identifiers for each block group, such as the metropolitan area code and congressional district code. The only data included in this table is total population and total housing units. POP1 and POP2 contain selected population variables and selected housing items are in the HU file. The MA05 table data is only for use by State CDBG grantees for the reporting of the racial composition of beneficiaries of Area Benefit activities. The complete package for a state consists of the dictionary file named TABLES, and the five data files for the state. The logical record number (LOGRECNO) links the records across tables.

    Abstract

    The gigantic task of census taking was completed in two phases. In the first phase, known as House-listing Operations, all building and structures, residential, partly residential or non- residential were identified and listed and the uses to which they were put recorded. Information on houses, household amenities and assets were also collected. In the second phase, known as Population Enumeration, more detailed information on each individual residing in the country, Indian national or otherwise, during the enumeration period was collected. At the Census 2001, more than 2 million (or 20 lakh) enumerators were deployed to collect the information by visiting every household. The Indian Census is one of the largest administrative exercises undertaken in the world.

    This statistic depicts the age distribution of India from 2013 to 2023. In 2023, about 25.06 percent of the Indian population fell into the 0-14 year category, 68.02 percent into the 15-64 age group and 6.92 percent were over 65 years of age. Age distribution in India India is one of the largest countries in the world and its population is constantly increasing. India’s society is categorized into a hierarchically organized caste system, encompassing certain rights and values for each caste. Indians are born into a caste, and those belonging to a lower echelon often face discrimination and hardship. The median age (which means that one half of the population is younger and the other one is older) of India’s population has been increasing constantly after a slump in the 1970s, and is expected to increase further over the next few years. However, in international comparison, it is fairly low; in other countries the average inhabitant is about 20 years older. But India seems to be on the rise, not only is it a member of the BRIC states – an association of emerging economies, the other members being Brazil, Russia and China –, life expectancy of Indians has also increased significantly over the past decade, which is an indicator of access to better health care and nutrition. Gender equality is still non-existant in India, even though most Indians believe that the quality of life is about equal for men and women in their country. India is patriarchal and women still often face forced marriages, domestic violence, dowry killings or rape. As of late, India has come to be considered one of the least safe places for women worldwide. Additionally, infanticide and selective abortion of female fetuses attribute to the inequality of women in India. It is believed that this has led to the fact that the vast majority of Indian children aged 0 to 6 years are male.

    Abstract

    The Enterprise Surveys of Micro firms (ESM) conducted by the World Bank Group's (WBG) Enterprise Analysis Unit (DECEA) in India. The survey covers nine cities: Hyderabad, Telangana; Jaipur, Rajasthan; Kochi, Kerala; Ludhiana, Punjab; Mumbai, Maharashtra; Sehore, Madhya Pradesh; Surat, Gujarat; Tezpur, Assam; and Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

    The primary objectives of the ESM are to: i) understand demographics of the micro enterprises in the covered cities, ii) describe the environment within which these enterprises operate, and iii) enable data analysis based on the samples that are representative at each city level.

    Universe

    The universe of ESM includes formally registered businesses in the sectors covered by the ES and with less than five employees. The definition of formal registration can vary by country. The universe table for each of the nine cities covered by ESM in India was obtained from the 6th Economic Census (EC) of India (conducted between January 2013 and April 2014), which has its own well-defined definition of registration. Generally, this entails registration with any central/government agency, under Shops & Establishment Act, Factories Act etc.

    In terms of sectors, the survey covers all non-agricultural and non-extractive sectors. In particular, according to the group classification of ISIC Revision 4.0, it includes: all manufacturing sectors (group D), construction (group F), wholesale and retail trade (group G), transportation and storage (group H), accommodation and food service activities (group I), a subset of information and communications (group J), some administrative and support service activities (codes 79) and other service activities (codes 95). Notably, the ESM universe excludes the following sectors: financial and insurance activities (group K), real estate activities (group L), and all public or utilities-sectors.

    Sampling procedure

    The sample for Enterprise Survey of Micro firms in India 2022 was selected using stratified random sampling, following the methodology explained in the Sampling Note (https://www.enterprisesurveys.org/content/dam/enterprisesurveys/documents/methodology/Sampling_Note-Consolidated-2-16-22.pdf). Stratified random sampling was preferred over simple random sampling for several reasons, including: a. To obtain unbiased estimates for different subdivisions of the population with some known level of precision, along with the unbiased estimates for the whole population. b. To make sure that the final total sample includes establishments from all different sectors and that it is not concentrated in one or two of industries/sizes/regions. c. To exploit the benefits of stratified sampling where population estimates, in most cases, will be more precise than using a simple random sampling method (i.e., lower standard errors, other things being equal.) d. Stratification may produce a smaller bound on the error of estimation than would be produced by a simple random sample of the same size. This result is particularly true if measurements within strata are homogeneous. e. The cost per observation in the survey may be reduced by stratification of the population elements into convenient groupings.

    Two levels of stratification were used in this survey: industry and region. For stratification by industry, two groups were used: Manufacturing (combining all the relevant activities in ISIC Rev. 4.0 codes 10-33) and Services (remainder of the universe, as outlined above). Regional stratification was done across nine cities included in the study, namely: Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Ludhiana, Mumbai, Sehore, Surat, Tezpur and Varanasi.

    Abstract

    Introduction

    The Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) is the principal source of industrial statistics in India. It provides statistical information to assess changes in the growth, composition and structure of organised manufacturing sector comprising activities related to manufacturing processes, repair services, gas and water supply and cold storage. Industrial sector occupies an important position in the State economy and has a pivotal role to play in the rapid and balanced economic development. The Survey is conducted annually under the statutory provisions of the Collection of Statistics Act 1953, and the Rules framed there-under in 1959, except in the State of Jammu & Kashmir where it is conducted under the State Collection of Statistics Act, 1961 and the rules framed there-under in 1964.

    Geographic coverage

    Coverage of the Annual Survey of Industries extends to the entire Factory Sector, comprising industrial units (called factories) registered under section 2(m)(i) and 2(m)(ii) of the Factories Act.1948, wherein a "Factory", which is the primary statistical unit of enumeration for the ASI is defined as:- "Any premises" including the precincts thereof:- (i) wherein ten or more workers are working or were working on any day of the preceding twelve months, and in any part of which a manufacturing process is being carried on with the aid of power or is ordinarily so carried on, or (ii) wherein twenty or more workers are working or were working on any day of the preceding twelve months, and in any part of which a manufacturing process is being carried on without the aid of power. In addition to section 2(m)(i) & 2(m)(ii) of the Factories Act, 1948, electricity units registered with the Central Electricity Authority and Bidi & Cigar units, registered under the Bidi & Cigar Workers (Conditions of Employment) Act,1966 are also covered in ASI.

    Analysis unit

    The primary unit of enumeration in the survey is a factory in the case of manufacturing industries, a workshop in the case of repair services, an undertaking or a licensee in the case of electricity, gas & water supply undertakings and an establishment in the case of bidi & cigar industries. The owner of two or more establishments located in the same State and pertaining to the same industry group and belonging to same scheme (census or sample) is, however, permitted to furnish a single consolidated return. Such consolidated returns are common feature in the case of bidi and cigar establishments, electricity and certain public sector undertakings.

    Universe

    The survey cover factories registered under the Factory Act 1948. Establishments under the control of the Defence Ministry,oil storage and distribution units, restaurants and cafes and technical training institutions not producing anything for sale or exchange were kept outside the coverage of the ASI. The geographical coverage of the Annual Survey of Industries, 2002-03 has been extended to the entire country except the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Sikkim and Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

    Sampling Procedure

    The sampling design followed in ASI 2002-03 is a circular systematic one. All the factories in the updated frame (universe) are divided into two sectors, viz., Census and Sample.

    Census Sector: Census Sector is defined as follows:

    a) All industrial units belonging to the six less industrially developed states/ UT's viz. Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
    b) For the rest of the twenty-six states/ UT's., (i) units having 100 or more workers, and (ii) all factories covered under Joint Returns. c) After excluding the Census Sector units as defined above, all units belonging to the strata (State by 4-digit of NIC-04) having less than or equal to 4 units are also considered as Census Sector units.

    Remaining units, excluding those of Census Sector, called the sample sector, are arranged in order of their number of workers and samples are then drawn circular systematically considering sampling fraction of 20% within each stratum (State X Sector X 4-digit NIC) for all the states. An even number of units with a minimum of 4 are selected and evenly distributed in two sub-samples. The sectors considered here are Biri, Manufacturing and Electricity.

    Annual Survey of Industries Questionnaire (in External Resources) is divided into different blocks:

    BLOCK A :IDENTIFICATION PARTICULARS BLOCK B : PARTICULARS OF THE FACTORY (TO BE FILLED BY OWNER OF THE FACTORY) BLOCK C : FIXED ASSETS BLOCK D : WORKING CAPITAL & LOANS BLOCK E : EMPLOYMENT AND LABOUR COST BLOCK F : OTHER EXPENSES BLOCK G : OTHER INCOMES BLOCK H : INPUT ITEMS (indigenous items consumed) BLOCK I : INPUT ITEMS – directly imported items only (consumed) BLOCK J : PRODUCTS AND BY-PRODUCTS (manufactured by the unit)

    Cleaning operations

    Pre-data entry scrutiny was carried out on the schedules for inter and intra block consistency checks. Such editing was mostly manual, although some editing was automatic. But, for major inconsistencies, the schedules were referred back to NSSO (FOD) for clarifications/modifications.

    Tabulation procedure The tabulation procedure by CSO(ISW) includes both the ASI 2002-03 data and the extracted data from ASI 01-02 for all tabulation purpose. For extracted returns, status of unit (Block A, Item 12) would be in the range 17 to 20. To make results comparable, users are requested to follow the same procedure. For calculation of various parameters, users are requested to refer instruction manual/report. Please note that a separate inflation factor (Multiplier) is available for each unit against records belonging to Block-A ,pos:62-70 (Please refer STRUC03.XLS) for ASI 2002-03 data. The multiplier is calculated for each sub-stratum (i.e. State X NIC'98(4 Digit) X sub-stratum) after adjusting for non-response cases.

    Status of unit code 17-20 may always be considered for all processing.

    Merging of unit level data As per existing policy to merge unit level data at ultimate digit level of NIC'98 (i.e., 5 digit) for the purpose of dissemination, the data have been merged for industries having less than three units within State, District and NIC'98(5 Digit) with the adjoining industries within district and then to adjoining districts within a state. There may be some NIC'98(5 Digit) ending with '9' which do not figure in the book of NIC '98. These may be treated as 'Others' under the corresponding 4-digit group. To suppress the identity of factories data fields corresponding to PSL number, Industry code as per Frame (4-digit level of NIC-98) and RO/SRO code have been filled with '9' in each record.

    It may please be noted that, tables generated from the merged data may not tally with the published results for few industries, since the merging for published data has been done at aggregate-level to minimise the loss of information.

    Sampling error estimates

    Relative Standard Error (RSE) is calculated in terms of worker, wages to worker and GVA using the formula. Programs developed in Visual Foxpro are used to compute the RSE of estimates.

    Data appraisal

    To check for consistency and reliability of data the same are compared with the NIC-2digit level growth rate at all India Index of Production (IIP) and the growth rates obtained from the National Accounts Statistics at current and constant prices for the registered manufacturing sector.
