    The MARS file contains modified race and age data based on the 1990 Census. Both race and age are tabulated by sex and Hispanic origin for several layers of geography. The race data were modified to make reporting categories comparable to those used by state and local agencies. The 1990 Census included 9,804,847 persons who checked the "other race" category and were therefore not included in one of the 15 racial categories listed on the Census form. "Other race" is usually not an acceptable reporting category for state and local agencies. Therefore, the Census Bureau assigned each "other race" person to the specified race reported by another person geographically close with an identical response to the Hispanic-origin question. Hispanic origin was taken into account because over 95 percent of the "other race" persons were of Hispanic origin. (Hispanic-origin persons may be of any race.) The assignment of race to Hispanic-origin persons did not affect the Hispanic-origin category that they checked (i.e, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc.). Age data were modified because respondents tended to report age as of the date they completed the 1990 questionnaire, instead of age as of the April 1, 1990 Census date. In addition, there may have been a tendency for respondents to round up their age if they were close to having a birthday. Age data for individuals in households were modified by adjusting the reported birth-year data by race and sex for each of the 1990 Census's 449 district offices to correspond with the national level quarterly distribution of births available from the National Center for Health Statistics. The data for persons in group quarters were adjusted similarly, but on a state basis. The age adjustment affects approximately 100 million people. In this file their adjusted age is one year different from that reported in the 1990 Census. STF-S-2B only contains data for 12 states, their counties, and Minor Civil Divisions (MCDs).     Description

    US Census data describing national gender and race demographics from 2000 to 2020.

    The 2000 and 2010 data is fairly straight-forward. The US census website only had the caveat that the 2010 category for "Some other race-only" may have been between (19.1-20.1 million / 6.2-6.5%) and the category for "2 or more races" may have been a range (8.0-9.0 million / 2.6-2.9%). The numbers used in the dataset were the final numbers that the US census gives as their final numbers.

    The official 2020 Census data will not be released until May 2023, so the numbers given are not official yet.

    2020 Gender: The gender numbers are an estimate (163.8-164.8 million female / 166.9-167.8 million male). I used numbers that kept the ratio and summed to the total population. 2020 Race: The categories "Some other race-only" and "2 or more races" increased significantly for 2020. These changes are mainly due to a difference in how the race and ethnicity questions were asked. (It wasn't only because the demographics themselves changed, but mainly in how people answer the question.) The "Some other race-only" includes mostly Latino and Hispanic people (94%). The "2 or more races" category includes mostly people who are both White and another race(s) (86%). You should take this change into account when comparing an earlier census to the 2020 census. Race "Minority": Lastly, the minority category is calculated by subtracting the population of White-only, Non-Hispanic people from the total US population. Anyone who is any other race besides white AND anyone who is Latino/Hispanic would fall into the minority category.

    Decennial Census Summary File 3 (SF 3) Description Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3) Summary File 3 presents in-depth population and housing data collected on a sample basis from the Census 2000 long form questionnaire, as well as the topics from the short form 100-percent data (age, race, sex, Hispanic or Latino origin, tenure [whether a housing unit is owner- or renter-occupied], and vacancy status). Summary File 3 consists of 813 detailed tables of Census 2000 social, economic and housing characteristics compiled from a sample of approximately 19 million housing units (about 1 in 6 households) that received the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire. Fifty-one tables are repeated for nine major race and Hispanic or Latino groups: White alone; Black or African American alone; American Indian and Alaska Native alone; Asian alone; Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone; Some other race alone; Two or more races; Hispanic or Latino; and White alone, not Hispanic or Latino.     Abstract (en): Summary File 2 contains 100-percent United States decennial Census data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and group quarters occupancy. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status, and tenure (owner-occupied or renter- occupied). The 100-percent data are presented in 36 population tables ("PCT") and 11 housing tables ("HCT") down to the census tract level. Each table is iterated for 250 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), and 39 Hispanic or Latino groups. The presentation of tables for any of the 250 population groups is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people, that is, if there were fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Created variable labels and/or value labels.. All persons in housing units in Colorado in 2000. 2013-05-24 Multiple Census data file segments were repackaged for distribution into a single zip archive per dataset.     Description

    The once-a-decade decennial census was conducted in April 2010 by the U.S. Census Bureau. This count of every resident in the United States was mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution and all households in the U.S. and individuals living in group quarters were required by law to respond to the 2010 Census questionnaire. The data collected by the decennial census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities. The questionnaire consisted of a limited number of questions but allowed for the collection of information on the number of people in the household and their relationship to the householder, an individual's age, sex, race and Hispanic ethnicity, the number of housing units and whether those units are owner- or renter-occupied, or vacant. The first wave of results for sub-state geographic areas in New Mexico was released on March 15, 2011, through the Redistricting Data (PL94-171) Summary File. This batch of data covers the state, counties, places (both incorporated and unincorporated communities), tribal lands, school districts, neighborhoods (census tracts and block groups), individual census blocks, and other areas. The Redistricting products provide counts by race and Hispanic ethnicity for the total population and the population 18 years and over, and housing unit counts by occupancy status. The 2010 Census Redistricting Data Summary File can be used to redraw federal, state and local legislative districts under Public Law 94-171. This is an important purpose of the file and, indeed, state officials use the Redistricting Data to realign congressional and state legislative districts in their states, taking into account population shifts since the 2000 Census. More detailed population and housing characteristics will be released in the summer of 2011. The data in these particular RGIS Clearinghouse tables are for all Census Tracts in New Mexico. There are two data tables. One provides total counts by major race groups and by Hispanic ethnicity, while the other provides proportions of the total population for these same groups. These files, along with file-specific descriptions (in Word and text formats) are available in a single zip file.

    This CD consists of the Race and Hispanic or Latino Summary File. It contains summary statistics. This CD contains summary population counts for two universes, total population and population 18 years and over. The data were derived from the basic questions asked on all census questionnaires. These are often called the 100-percent questions. This file contains four tables: a count of all persons by race. a count of the population 18 years and over by race. a count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino by race for all persons. a count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino by race for the population 18 years and over.

    Note to Users: This CD is part of a collection located in the Data Archive of the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection is located in Room 10, Manning Hall. Users may check the CDs out subscribing to the honor system. Items can be checked out for a period of two weeks. Loan forms are located adjacent to the collection.

    The Race and Hispanic or Latino Summary File is an extract of selected geographic areas pr eviously released in the state Census 2000 Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171) Summary Files. In addition, this file provides summaries for the United States, regions, divisions, and American Indian and Alaska Native areas that cross state boundaries. With subject content identical to that provided in Summary File 1, the information is presented in 286 tables which are tabulated for every upper and lower chamber state legislative district and smaller geographic units within the districts: counties, county subdivisions, places, consolidated cities, and American Indian Areas/Alaska Native Areas/Hawaiian Home Lands. There is one variable per table cell, plus additional variables with geographic information, which are recorded in 2,080 data files, 40 for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The collection is supplied in 54 ZIP archives. There is an archive for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and for the convenience of those who need all of the data, a separate ZIP archive with all 2,080 data files.     Summary File 2 contains 100-percent United States decennial Census data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and group quarters occupancy. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status, and tenure (owner-occupied or renter- occupied). The 100-percent data are presented in 36 population tables ("PCT") and 11 housing tables ("HCT") down to the census tract level. Each table is iterated for 250 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), and 39 Hispanic or Latino groups. The presentation of tables for any of the 250 population groups is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people, that is, if there were fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area.

There are a total of 171 population tables ("P") and 56 housing tables ("H") provided down to the block level, and 59 population tables provided down to the census tract level ("PCT") for a total of 286 tables. In addition, 14 population tables and 4 housing tables at the block level and 4 population tables at the census tract level are repeated by major race and Hispanic or Latino groups. The data present population and housing characteristics for the total population, population totals for an extensive list of race (American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander) and Hispanic or Latino groups, and population and housing characteristics for a limited list of race and Hispanic or Latino groups.     Description

    BackgroundAddressing contemporary anti-Asian racism and its impacts on health requires understanding its historical roots, including discriminatory restrictions on immigration, citizenship, and land ownership. Archival secondary data such as historical census records provide opportunities to quantitatively analyze structural dynamics that affect the health of Asian immigrants and Asian Americans. Census data overcome weaknesses of other data sources, such as small sample size and aggregation of Asian subgroups. This article explores the strengths and limitations of early twentieth-century census data for understanding Asian Americans and structural racism.MethodsWe used California census data from three decennial census spanning 1920–1940 to compare two criteria for identifying Asian Americans: census racial categories and Asian surname lists (Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, and Filipino) that have been validated in contemporary population data. This paper examines the sensitivity and specificity of surname classification compared to census-designated “color or race” at the population level.ResultsSurname criteria were found to be highly specific, with each of the five surname lists having a specificity of over 99% for all three census years. The Chinese surname list had the highest sensitivity (ranging from 0.60–0.67 across census years), followed by the Indian (0.54–0.61) and Japanese (0.51–0.62) surname lists. Sensitivity was much lower for Korean (0.40–0.45) and Filipino (0.10–0.21) surnames. With the exception of Indian surnames, the sensitivity values of surname criteria were lower for the 1920–1940 census data than those reported for the 1990 census. The extent of the difference in sensitivity and trends across census years vary by subgroup.DiscussionSurname criteria may have lower sensitivity in detecting Asian subgroups in historical data as opposed to contemporary data as enumeration procedures for Asians have changed across time. We examine how the conflation of race, ethnicity, and nationality in the census could contribute to low sensitivity of surname classification compared to census-designated “color or race.” These results can guide decisions when operationalizing race in the context of specific research questions, thus promoting historical quantitative study of Asian American experiences. Furthermore, these results stress the need to situate measures of race and racism in their specific historical context.

    Abstract (en): Summary File 2 contains 100-percent United States decennial Census data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and group quarters occupancy. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status, and tenure (owner-occupied or renter- occupied). The 100-percent data are presented in 36 population tables ("PCT") and 11 housing tables ("HCT") down to the census tract level. Each table is iterated for 250 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), and 39 Hispanic or Latino groups. The presentation of tables for any of the 250 population groups is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people, that is, if there were fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Created variable labels and/or value labels.. All persons in housing units in South Dakota in 2000. 2013-05-24 Multiple Census data file segments were repackaged for distribution into a single zip archive per dataset. Because of the number of files per state in Summary File 2, ICPSR has given each state its own ICPSR study number in the range ICPSR 13233-13284. Data for each state are being released as they become available.The data are provided in four segments (files) per iteration. These segments are PCT1-PCT4, PCT5-PCT19, PCT20-PCT36, and HCT1-HCT11. The iterations are Parts 1-250, the Geographic Header file is Part 251. The Geographic Header file is in fixed-format ASCII and the Table files are in comma-delimited ASCII format. The Geographic Header file has 85 variables, Segment 01 has 224 variables, Segment 02 has 240 variables, Segment 03 has 179 variables, and Segment 04 has 141 variables. When all the segments are merged there are 849 variables.

Description

The MARS file contains modified race and age data based on the 1990 Census. Both race and age are tabulated by sex and Hispanic origin for several layers of geography. The race data were modified to make reporting categories comparable to those used by state and local agencies. The 1990 Census included 9,804,847 persons who checked the "other race" category and were therefore not included in one of the 15 racial categories listed on the Census form. "Other race" is usually not an acceptable reporting category for state and local agencies. Therefore, the Census Bureau assigned each "other race" person to the specified race reported by another person geographically close with an identical response to the Hispanic-origin question. Hispanic origin was taken into account because over 95 percent of the "other race" persons were of Hispanic origin. (Hispanic-origin persons may be of any race.) The assignment of race to Hispanic-origin persons did not affect the Hispanic-origin category that they checked (i.e, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc.). Age data were modified because respondents tended to report age as of the date they completed the 1990 questionnaire, instead of age as of the April 1, 1990 Census date. In addition, there may have been a tendency for respondents to round up their age if they were close to having a birthday. Age data for individuals in households were modified by adjusting the reported birth-year data by race and sex for each of the 1990 Census's 449 district offices to correspond with the national level quarterly distribution of births available from the National Center for Health Statistics. The data for persons in group quarters were adjusted similarly, but on a state basis. The age adjustment affects approximately 100 million people. In this file their adjusted age is one year different from that reported in the 1990 Census. STF-S-2B only contains data for 12 states, their counties, and Minor Civil Divisions (MCDs).
