    Description

The Great Britain Historical Database has been assembled as part of the ongoing Great Britain Historical GIS Project. The project aims to trace the emergence of the north-south divide in Britain and to provide a synoptic view of the human geography of Britain at sub-county scales. Further information about the project is available on A Vision of Britain webpages, where users can browse the database's documentation system online.

These data were originally collected by the Censuses of Population for England and Wales, and for Scotland. They were computerised by the Great Britain Historical GIS Project and its collaborators. They form part of the Great Britain Historical Database, which contains a wide range of geographically-located statistics, selected to trace the emergence of the north-south divide in Britain and to provide a synoptic view of the human geography of Britain, generally at sub-county scales.

Up to 1931, the only information on housing conditions gathered by the census was on density (persons per room). In 1951 a new set of questions was added on amenities: for example, whether a household had access to a "WC" (toilet), and whether that access was shared. Successive censuses changed the list of amenities, as access to amenities such as running water became universal

This is a new edition. Data from the Census of Scotland have been added for 1951, 1961 and 1971. Wherever possible, ID numbers have been added for counties and districts which match those used in the digital boundary data created by the GBH GIS, greatly simplifying mapping.

    Description

The 1961 Census Microdata Individual File for Great Britain: 5% Sample dataset was created from existing digital records from the 1961 Census under a project known as Enhancing and Enriching Historic Census Microdata Samples (EEHCM), which was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council with input from the Office for National Statistics and National Records of Scotland. The project ran from 2012-2014 and was led from the UK Data Archive, University of Essex, in collaboration with the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research (CMIST) at the University of Manchester and the Census Offices. In addition to the 1961 data, the team worked on files from the 1971 Census and 1981 Census.

The original 1961 records preceded current data archival standards and were created before microdata sets for secondary use were anticipated. A process of data recovery and quality checking was necessary to maximise their utility for current researchers, though some imperfections remain (see the User Guide for details). Three other 1961 Census datasets have been created:

    • SN 8273 - 1961 Census Microdata Household File for Great Britain: 0.95% Sample, which links household members together to allow individuals to be understood within their household context, and is available to registered UK Data Service users based in the United Kingdom (see Access section for non-UK access restrictions);
    • SN 8274 - 1961 Census Microdata Teaching Dataset for Great Britain: 1% Sample: Open Access, which can be used as a taster file and is freely available for anyone to download under an Open Government Licence; and
    • SN 8275 - 1961 Census Microdata for Great Britain: 9% Sample: Secure Access, which comprises a larger population sample and so contains sufficient information to constitute personal data, meaning that it is only available to Accredited Researchers, under restrictive Secure Access conditions.

Numbers of eligible pupils and the take up of Free School Meals (FSM) for Maintained York Local Authority Schools (Excludes dual registered subsidiary pupils). All data is taken from the January School Census and published around April time. Data for Academy schools is not available. Please note that FSM taken data isn’t available in the census data since 2018, and therefore columns relating to FSM taken has been removed from the dataset. Due to data protection requirements, we can't publish real values for FSMTotal or FSMTaken when those figures are < 5. Thus, those values have been converted to 9999. If a cell has no value it means that data is not collected for that field for that specific school.

Participants were identified by linking 2011 Census records to the All Education Dataset for England (AEDE), covering those enrolled in government-funded education or non-government-funded further education between the 2001/02 and 2014/15 academic years. The dataset includes demographic, geographic, household, and educational information, as well as vulnerability indicators such as Free School Meals eligibility, Children in Need status, Children Looked After status, absences, and exclusions. The study consists of multiple waves: Wave 1 covers standard education records, while Wave 2 includes specific education and care data with additional statistical disclosure rules.

    Description

"Free access to data produced by the Office for National Statistics, government departments and devolved administrations."

    Datasets

    Openness: OPEN (?)

    (As of 2007-08-22)

    • Access: download via web interface with no machine automable system (layout of files is also nonstandard)
    • Licensing: Statistics are Crown Copyright but licensed under standard PSI click-use license though may be some reservations -- see below.

    Details

    • National statistics are under Crown Copyright
    • If you want to reproduce the statistics other than for research or private study you need a 'core' (now called PSI) click-use license
    • Some distinction seems to be drawn between reproduction (permitted) and redistribution (which includes 'repackaging') and special extra permission is needed for redistribution: "Customers wishing to repackage and/or redistribute National Statistics material in their own products or services and allow their customers to use such material should contact hmsolicensing@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk with details of their request."
    • For census products (see e.g. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/get_facts.asp) state:

"A number of organisations provide products based on the Census, complementing what is available directly from ONS, and more information about licensed distribution can be obtained by emailing Census Licensing at Census Licensing.

ONS has also granted some commercial organisations an Approved Supplier status, approving their distribution of value added Census products."

This suggests census material may not be redistributed without special permission (whether in original form or recombined with other data).

Thus the data available may not provide:

    • freedom to redistribute
    • freedom to reuse

As such it fails to fully comply with the principles laid out in the open knowledge definition.

    Further Details

    Start at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/tc.asp which states:

FreeCEN was started early in 2000 with a pilot project for the 1891 census returns for Devon. The aim of Free Census is to transcribe all the UK 19th century census returns. It is part of Free UKGEN and is a sister project to FreeBMD and Free REG. The intention is that all three of the UK primary sources for the family historian will be online and “free to view.” Six months after the Devon project started, the Cornwall 1891 commenced.
    Main Topics:

This data is a transcription of all census enumerators books of the Cornwall registration districts, however this does not entirely match up with the county boundary. Near the border with Devon some parishes are the wrong side of the boundary. Variables include Number of Schedule; road, street and number and/or name of house. Forename and Surname, Relation to Head of Household, martial status, age at last birthday, occupation, place of birth, disability and additional notes.
