    This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by their use of a second address, and whether the second address is inside or outside the UK. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021.

    Area type

    Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

    For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail. This is to protect the confidentiality of people and ensure that individuals or their characteristics cannot be identified.

    Coverage

    Census 2021 statistics are published for the whole of England and Wales. Data are also available in these geographic types:

    • country - for example, Wales
    • region - for example, London
    • local authority - for example, Cornwall
    • health area – for example, Clinical Commissioning Group
    • statistical area - for example, MSOA or LSOA

    Second address indicator (3 categories)

    An address (in or out of the UK) a person stays at for more than 30 days per year that is not their place of usual residence.

    Second addresses typically include:

    • armed forces bases
    • addresses used by people working away from home
    • a student’s home address
    • the address of another parent or guardian
    • a partner’s address
    • a holiday home

    If a person with a second address was staying there on census night, they were classed as a visitor to the second address but counted as a usual resident at their home address.

    Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.The UK censuses took place on 27 March 2011. They were run by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA), National Records of Scotland (NRS), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for both England and Wales. The UK comprises the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.Statistics from the UK censuses help paint a picture of the nation and how we live. They provide a detailed snapshot of the population and its characteristics and underpin funding allocation to provide public services. This is the home for all UK census data. The 2011 Census Microdata Individual Safeguarded Sample (Regional): England and Wales data collection forms part of the statistical outputs from the 2011 UK Census. A safeguarded microdata sample of individuals has been identified as a key Census user requirement, and was highlighted as part of a report specifying microdata products from the 2011 Census written by an expert user, Dr. Jo Wathan from the University of Manchester. The purpose of a safeguarded sample of individuals is to be able to disseminate a detailed microdata file without onerous licensing conditions, by reducing the overall amount of detail compared to the secure samples. Whilst supplying sufficient detail on core variables to fulfil the intended aim of the microdata products, the safeguarded sample is a valuable multi-purpose research file that will be used on a wide range of projects. (For Censuses prior to 2011, these data may have been referred to as 'Samples of Anonymised Records', or SARSs.) In total, five microdata samples are proposed from the 2011 Census:one public, a Teaching File of individuals (see SN 7613);two safeguarded, one file of individuals at regional level (this study, SN 7605) and one at local authority level (see SN 7682);and two secure, one file of households and one of individuals This safeguarded sample is of 5% of the total population at Region level, and contain a similar level of detail to the equivalent End User Licence Census 2001 Microdata samples. These samples have a low risk of disclosure; but not nil. Registered UK Data Service Census users can download the data to their laptops after agreeing terms and conditions that include constraints on data management under remote storage conditions.     The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national filewith no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independentdata set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The Address Range / Feature Name Relationship File (ADDRFN.dbf) contains a record for each address range / linear feature name relationship. The purpose of this relationship file is to identify all street names associated with each address range. An edge can have several feature names; an address range located on an edge can be associated with one or any combination of the available feature names (an address range can be linked to multiple feature names). The address range is identified by the address range identifier (ARID) attribute that can be used to link to the Address Ranges Relationship File (ADDR.dbf). The linear feature name is identified by the linear feature identifier (LINEARID) attribute that can be used to link to the Feature Names Relationship File (FEATNAMES.dbf).

    Description

    Newly available digital resources from the British census identify employers and their workforce size. However, there was a non-response rate of about 2.3% for smaller firms, rising to over 10% for firms over about 300 employees, and higher for the largest manufacturing firms. Non-responses are largely random except for different forms of business organization: significantly higher for corporates, and lower for unincorporated enterprises, but with no significant differences between partnerships and sole proprietors. Proprietor age is also significant. Non-response derives from defective census design and administration. Transcription truncations are also evaluated, which are higher for the largest firms, and vary by sector and position in the response string. Guidance to researchers on weighting and robust estimation strategies are presented for dealing with these limitations.

    "This file provides digital data for all 1990 precensus map features, the associated 1990 census initial tabulation geographic area codes, such as 1990 census block numbers, and the codes for the Jan. 1, 1990 political areas on both sides of each line segment of every mapped feature. The data contain basic information on 1990 census geographic area codes, feature names, and address ranges in the form of ten ""Record Types."" The Census Bureau added four new record types in response to some us er and vendor requests to provide point and area information contained in the Census Bureau's Precensus Map sheets that is not contained in the Precensus TIGER/Line files. The record types include: Basic data records (individual Feature Segment Records), shape coordinate points (feature shape records), additional decennial census geographic area codes, index to alternate feature names, feature name list, additional address range and zip code data, landmark features, area landmarks, area boundaries, and polygon location. Each segment record contains appropriate decennial census and FIPS geographic area codes, latitude/longitude coordinates, the name of the feature (including the relevant census feature class code identifying the segment by category), and, for areas formerly covered by the GBF/DIME-Files, the address ranges and ZIP code associated with those address ranges for each side of street segments. For other areas, the TIGER?Line files do not contain address ranges or ZIP Codes. The shape records provide coordinate values that describe the shape of those feature segments that are not straight."

The Address Ranges Feature Shapefile (ADDRFEAT.dbf) contains the geospatial edge geometry and attributes of all unsuppressed address ranges for a county or county equivalent area. The term "address range" refers to the collection of all possible structure numbers from the first structure number to the last structure number and all numbers of a specified parity in between along an edge side relative to the direction in which the edge is coded. Single-address address ranges have been suppressed to maintain the confidentiality of the addresses they describe. Multiple coincident address range feature edge records are represented in the shapefile if more than one left or right address ranges are associated to the edge. The ADDRFEAT shapefile contains a record for each address range to street name combination. Address range associated to more than one street name are also represented by multiple coincident address range feature edge records. Note that the ADDRFEAT shapefile includes all unsuppressed address ranges compared to the All Lines Shapefile (EDGES.shp) which only includes the most inclusive address range associated with each side of a street edge. The TIGER/Line shapefile contain potential address ranges, not individual addresses. The address ranges in the TIGER/Line Files are potential ranges that include the full range of possible structure numbers even though the actual structures may not exist.

    This dataset is a compilation of Frog Census records (citizen science program) and the preceding Frog Watch program for the Port Phillip and Westernport CMA Region. These presence-only records collected in an ad-hoc manner are combined with regional frog records form the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas (VBA) and results of Melbourne Water commissioned surveys for frogs.     Description

    An Act for ascertaining the Number of the Inhabitants of the Colony of New South Wales in the Year One thousand eight hundred and forty-one, 1840 (4 Victoria Act No. 26) required every householder, employer of servants and proprietor and occupier of land to complete the census schedule on the second day ('or on the days immediately subsequent thereto') of March 1841.

    The 1841 Census was more complete than its predecessors, as the population was recorded in police districts, counties and towns. There was a broader tabulation of results which included age groups, conjugal condition (married or unmarried), religious denomination and civil condition. Civil condition provided statistical information on the number of bond (convict) or free males and females in a household, whether they were born in the colony, arrived free, held a ticket of leave, and whether they were in government employment or private assignment.

    The Census was taken by specially appointed collectors generally responsible to a Commissioner or a Bench of Magistrates, the collector completed printed forms, known as Form ‘A’ for each household in the allotted territory. After the Census magistrates were instructed to check the returns and send abstracts to the Colonial Secretary, designated Form ‘C’. The returns were then gathered together, statistics extracted and the final returns made.

    This series comprises bound volumes of Form C . (NRS 1281).

    The Form C records: number of return, name of establishment (usually head of household), number of each age group for males, and then for females (the age divisions are under two, two and under seven, seven and under 14, 14 and under 21, 21 and under 45, 45 and under 60, 60 and upwards); married or single; civil condition: free (born in colony, arrived free, other free persons), bond (ticket of leave, in government employment, in private assignment); then religion divided into Church of England, Church of Scotland, Wesleyan Methodists, other Protestant dissenters, Roman Catholics, Jews, Mohammedans and Pagans; occupation divided into land proprietors, merchants, bankers, and professional men; shopkeepers and other retail dealers; mechanics and artificers; shepherds and others in the care of sheep; gardeners, stockmen and persons employed in agriculture; domestic servants; all other persons not included in the foregoing classes; totals for males, for females, and for both; houses - further divided into stone or brick, wood, total; finished or unfinished; inhabited or uninhabited. The columns are totalled at the bottom of each sheet.

    As well as these Abstracts of returns, there are also a number of "condensed" abstracts of returns, filled in on Form C. These enumerate the running numbers covered by each sheet of abstracts eg. one-20, 21-40 and give sums for each group as well as grand total.

    Form C abstracts are arranged by district following the order in the Returns of the Colony for 1841. 'Condensed' Abstracts are filed with the district abstracts to which they pertain.

    The UK censuses took place on 21st April 1991. They were run by the Census Office for Northern Ireland, General Register Office for Scotland, and the Office of Population and Surveys for both England and Wales. The UK comprises the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

    Statistics from the UK censuses help paint a picture of the nation and how we live. They provide a detailed snapshot of the population and its characteristics, and underpin funding allocation to provide public services.

    The Northern Ireland Individual SAR is a 2% sample of individuals which was drawn from the full set of 1991 Census records. It was released to the then Census Microdata Unit (now the Centre for Census and Survey Research) in May 1994 who then undertook quality assurance work and produced documentation and additional derived variables.

    The dataset contains 31,967 person records and 53 variables. A number of protections are in place to ensure the anonymity of cases in the data including the low sampling fraction, grouping of some rare categories, limitation of geographical detail and record reordering so that the cases are not ordered geographically.

    Once the Household SAR (held under SN 7213) had been removed to avoid an overlap between the two files, remaining records were stratified into groups of 99 and two individuals were chosen from each group. Individuals in communal establishments were stratified geographically into groups of 50 people and one person was chosen at random from each group. Unlike Great Britain, 100% of Northern Ireland records were coded.

    For many variables, the codes that are used in the Northern Ireland SARs differ from those used in the GB SARs. Where this is the case, the Northern Ireland coding follows on numerically from the GB coding but it will not necessarily start at 1 and have a value for every succeeding integer. For example, 'household family type' uses quite different coding to the nearest GB equivalent 'family type': the GB codes run from 00 through to 08, whilst the Northern Ireland codes pick up from 09 and run through to 23.

Description

This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by their use of a second address, and whether the second address is inside or outside the UK. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021.

Area type

Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail. This is to protect the confidentiality of people and ensure that individuals or their characteristics cannot be identified.

Coverage

Census 2021 statistics are published for the whole of England and Wales. Data are also available in these geographic types:

  • country - for example, Wales
  • region - for example, London
  • local authority - for example, Cornwall
  • health area – for example, Clinical Commissioning Group
  • statistical area - for example, MSOA or LSOA

Second address indicator (3 categories)

An address (in or out of the UK) a person stays at for more than 30 days per year that is not their place of usual residence.

Second addresses typically include:

  • armed forces bases
  • addresses used by people working away from home
  • a student’s home address
  • the address of another parent or guardian
  • a partner’s address
  • a holiday home

If a person with a second address was staying there on census night, they were classed as a visitor to the second address but counted as a usual resident at their home address.
