Summary File 1 (SF 1) contains detailed tables focusing on age, sex, households, families, and housing units. These tables provide in-depth figures by race and Hispanic origin> some tables are repeated for each of nine race/Latino groups. Counts also are provided for over forty American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and for groups within race categories. The race categories include eighteen Asian groups and twelve Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander groups. Counts of persons of Hispanic origin by country of origin (twenty-eight groups) are also shown. Summary File 1 presents data for the United States, the 50 states, and the District of Columbia in a hierarchical sequence down to the block level for many tabulations, but only to the census tract level for others. Summaries are included for other geographic areas such as ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) and Congressional districts. Geographic coverage for Puerto Rico is comparable to the 50 states. Data are presented in a hierarchical sequence down the block level for many tabulations, but only to the census tract level for others. Geographic areas include barrios, barrios-pueblo, subbarrios, places, census tracts, block groups, and blocks. Summaries also are included for other geographic areas such as ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs).

This data collection contains summary statistics on population and housing subjects derived from the responses to the 2010 Census questionnaire. Population items include sex, age, average household size, household type, and relationship to householder such as nonrelative or child. Housing items include tenure (whether a housing unit is owner-occupied or renter-occupied), age of householder, and household size for occupied housing units. Selected aggregates and medians also are provided. The summary statistics are presented in 71 tables, which are tabulated for multiple levels of observation (called "summary levels" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature), including, but not limited to, regions, divisions, states, metropolitan/micropolitan areas, counties, county subdivisions, places, ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), school districts, census tracts, American Indian and Alaska Native areas, tribal subdivisions, and Hawaiian home lands. There are 10 population tables shown down to the county level and 47 population tables and 14 housing tables shown down to the census tract level. Every table cell is represented by a separate variable in the data. Each table is iterated for up to 330 population groups, which are called "characteristic iterations" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature: the total population, 74 race categories, 114 American Indian and Alaska Native categories, 47 Asian categories, 43 Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander categories, and 51 Hispanic/not Hispanic groups. Moreover, the tables for some large summary areas (e.g., regions, divisions, and states) are iterated for portions of geographic areas ("geographic components" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature) such as metropolitan/micropolitan statistical areas and the principal cities of metropolitan statistical areas. The collection has a separate set of files for every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the National File. Each file set has 11 data files per characteristic iteration, a data file with geographic variables called the "geographic header file," and a documentation file called the "packing list" with information about the files in the file set. Altogether, the 53 file sets have 110,416 data files and 53 packing list files. Each file set is compressed in a separate ZIP archive (Datasets 1-56, 72, and 99). Another ZIP archive (Dataset 100) contains a Microsoft Access database shell and additional documentation files besides the codebook. The National File (Dataset 99) constitutes the National Update for Summary File 2. The National Update added summary levels for the United States as a whole, regions, divisions, and geographic areas that cross state lines such as Core Based Statistical Areas.

The Bureau of the Census has released Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1) 100-Percent data. The file includes the following population items: sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and household and family characteristics. Housing items include occupancy status and tenure (whether the unit is owner or renter occupied). SF1 does not include information on incomes, poverty status, overcrowded housing or age of housing. These topics will be covered in Summary File 3. Data are available for states, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, block groups, and, where applicable, American Indian and Alaskan Native Areas and Hawaiian Home Lands. The SF1 data are available on the Bureau's web site and may be retrieved from American FactFinder as tables, lists, or maps. Users may also download a set of compressed ASCII files for each state via the Bureau's FTP server. There are over 8000 data items available for each geographic area. The full listing of these data items is available here as a downloadable compressed data base file named TABLES.ZIP. The uncompressed is in FoxPro data base file (dbf) format and may be imported to ACCESS, EXCEL, and other software formats. While all of this information is useful, the Office of Community Planning and Development has downloaded selected information for all states and areas and is making this information available on the CPD web pages. The tables and data items selected are those items used in the CDBG and HOME allocation formulas plus topics most pertinent to the Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS), the Consolidated Plan, and similar overall economic and community development plans. The information is contained in five compressed (zipped) dbf tables for each state. When uncompressed the tables are ready for use with FoxPro and they can be imported into ACCESS, EXCEL, and other spreadsheet, GIS and database software. The data are at the block group summary level. The first two characters of the file name are the state abbreviation. The next two letters are BG for block group. Each record is labeled with the code and name of the city and county in which it is located so that the data can be summarized to higher-level geography. The last part of the file name describes the contents . The GEO file contains standard Census Bureau geographic identifiers for each block group, such as the metropolitan area code and congressional district code. The only data included in this table is total population and total housing units. POP1 and POP2 contain selected population variables and selected housing items are in the HU file. The MA05 table data is only for use by State CDBG grantees for the reporting of the racial composition of beneficiaries of Area Benefit activities. The complete package for a state consists of the dictionary file named TABLES, and the five data files for the state. The logical record number (LOGRECNO) links the records across tables.

Prepared by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, the block group subset was extracted from the Census of Population and Housing, 2000, Summary File 3 (SF3). The SF3 data contain information compiled from the questions asked of a sample of persons and housing units enumerated in Census 2000. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, marital status, caregiving by grandparents, language and ability to speak English, ancestry, place of birth, citizenship status and year of entry to the United States, migration, place of work, journey to work, school enrollment, educational attainment, veteran status, disability, employment status, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Housing items include housing unit vacancy status, housing unit tenure (owner/renter), number of rooms, number of bedrooms, year moved into unit, occupants per room, units in structure, year structure built, heating fuel, telephone service, plumbing and kitchen facilities, vehicles available, value of home, rent, and shelter costs. The information in SF3 is presented in 813 tables, one variable per table cell, plus additional variables with geographic information. However, only 409 of these tables are shown for the block group and higher levels of geography. The remaining 404 tables, which are shown for the census tract and higher levels of geography, were excluded from the block group subset. Cases in the summary file data are classified by levels of observation, known as "summary levels" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature. The block group subset comprises all of the cases in the SF3 data for summary level 150. Five data files are provided with this collection. There is a block group subset for each of the four census regions (Northeast, Midwest, South, and West), plus a national subset that covers all of the regions.

The AIAN Summary File contains data on population characteristics, such as sex, age, average household size, household type, and relationship to householder. The American Indian and Alaska Native Summary File (AIANSF) contains data on population characteristics, such as sex, age, average household size, household type, and relationship to householder. The file also includes housing characteristics, such as tenure (whether a housing unit is owner-occupied or renter- occupied) and age of householder for occupied housing units. Selected aggregates and medians also are provided. A complete listing of subjects in the AIANSF is found in Chapter 3, Subject Locator. The layout of the tables in the AIANSF is similar to that in Summary File 2 (SF 2). These data are presented in 47 population tables (identified with a "PCT") and 14 housing tables (identified with an "HCT") shown down to the census tract level; and 10 population tables (identified with a "PCO") shown down to the county level, for a total of 71 tables. Each table is iterated for the total population, the total American Indian and Alaska Native population alone, the total American Indian and Alaska Native population alone or in combination, and 1,567 detailed tribes and tribal groupings. Tribes or tribal groupings are included on the iterations list if they met a threshold of at least 100 people in the 2010 Census. In addition, the presentation of AIANSF tables for any of the tribes and tribal groupings is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people in a given geography. That is, if there are fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area in the AIANSF. Summary File 1 (SF1) Urban/Rural Update contains summary statistics on population and housing subjects derived from the responses to the 2010 Census questionnaire. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, household type, household size, family type, family size, and group quarters. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status, and tenure (whether a housing unit is owner-occupied or renter-occupied). The summary statistics are presented in 333 tables, which are tabulated for multiple levels of observation (called "summary levels" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature), including, but not limited to, regions, divisions, states, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical areas, counties, county subdivisions, places, congressional districts, American Indian Areas, Alaska Native Areas, Hawaiian Home Lands, ZIP Code tabulation areas, census tracts, block groups, and blocks. There are 177 population tables and 58 housing tables shown down to the block level; 84 population tables and 4 housing tables shown down to the census tract level; and 10 population tables shown down to the county level. Some of the summary areas are iterated for "geographic components" or portions of geographic areas, e.g., the principal city of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) or the urban and rural portions of a MSA. With one variable per table cell and additional variables with geographic information, the collection comprises 2,597 data files, 49 per state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the National File. The Census Bureau released SF1 in three stages: initial release, National Update, and Urban/Rural Update. The National Update added summary levels for the United States, regions, divisions, and geographic areas that cross state lines such as Combined Statistical Areas. This update adds urban and rural population and housing unit counts, summary levels for urban areas and the urban/rural components of census tracts and block groups, geographic components involving urbanized areas and urban clusters, and two new tables (household type by relationship for the population 65 years and over and a new tabulation of the total population by race). The initial release and National Update is available as ICPSR 33461. ICPSR supplies this data collection in 54 ZIP archives. There is a separate archive for each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the National File. The last archive contains a Microsoft Access database shell and additional documentation files besides the codebook.

Four files are supplied for the summary level 860 subset: a single file that contains all of the SF3 tables, plus three smaller files, each of which contains about one third of the tables. Five files are supplied for each of the summary level 010, 040, 380, 385, 160, and 050 subsets: a single file that contains all of the SF3 tables, plus four smaller files, each of which contains approximately one quarter of the tables. Fifteen files are provided for each of the summary level 140 and 158 subsets. There is a national file with all of the SF3 tables, plus two smaller national files, each of which contains approximately one half of the tables. LOJIC produced the MetroTract_2010 polygon feature class as a subset of 2010 Census Tiger/Line Files that is comprised of counties relevant to the Louisville- Jefferson County Metropolitan area and relevant surrounding Indiana and Kentucky counties. Attribution for this feature class consists of selected fields from the original shapefile, Geographic Header file and 2010 Redisticting population summary files, Part 1 and Part 2. Field naming conventions comply with those set forth by the U.S. Census. This is discussed to a greater degree below. The geographic coverage of MetroTract_2010 includes census tracts for Indiana and Kentucky counties that are tangent or within relevant proximity to Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Area. Indiana counties include Clark, Floyd and Harrison. Kentucky counties include Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Meade, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble. LOJIC census feature classes have been populated with a selected subset of relevant Census geographic and jurisdictional information derived from the Census Geographic Header file. A selected subset of population statistics from the Redistricting data summary files has also been incorporated. Please note that the included geographic header and population counts are not comprehensive. More specifically, not all fields from from the original shape, geographic header or summary files is contained in the feature class. Geographic Header, Part 1 and Part 2 tables that constitute the previously listed Indiana and Kentucky counties have been published in their entirety for any additional information that the end user may desire. This will require the end user to join the feature class to these tables. Feature classes can be joined to the Geographic Header table (PL_GEO_H_2010) with the [GEOID] field. To insure a 1:1 relationship and correct population data, the [GEOID] has been calculated only for relevant Census summary levels. Feature classes can be joined to the Part 1 (PL_PART1_2010) and Part 2 (PL_PART2_2010) tables with the [LOGRECSTID] field. This field insures a 1:1 relationship between the geography and its accurate population statistics. Part 1 includes categorizations of Populaton by Race (P001 fields) and Population by Hispanic or Latino Ethnicity and Race (P002 fields). Part 2 includes categorizations of Population by Race and Age 18 and Over (P003 fields), Population by Hispanic or Latino Ethnicity and Race and Ages 18 and Over (P004 fields), and finally, Occupancy Status (H001 fields). Currently, 2010 Census population counts are limited to what has been released by the U.S. Census Bureau, namely 2010 Redistricting Data. Full documentation for all Census Geographic Headerand Population fields can be referenced in the published tables, HEADER_DESCRIPT_2010 and POP_DESCRIPT_2010 respectively. These tables indicate field names and their respective descriptions. Please familiarize yourself with the Census abstract information that follows. The TIGER/Line Files are shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) that are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line File is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Census Blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and/or by nonvisible boundaries such as city, town, township, and county limits, and short line-of-sight extensions of streets and roads. Census blocks are relatively small in area; for example, a block in a city bounded by streets. However, census blocks in remote areas are often large and irregular and may even be many square miles in area. A common misunderstanding is that data users think census blocks are used geographically to build all other census geographic areas, rather all other census geographic areas are updated and then used as the primary constraints, along with roads and water features, to delineate the tabulation blocks. As a result, all 2010 Census blocks nest within every other 2010 Census geographic area, so that Census Bureau statistical data can be tabulated at the block level and aggregated up to the appropriate geographic areas. Census blocks cover all territory in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Blocks are the smallest geographic areas for which the Census Bureau publishes data from the decennial census. A block may consist of one or more faces.The attribute field "SQ_MILES" contains the area calculated to the thousandth (0.001) square mile. For entries showing 0, refer to the SHAPE_Area field for values in square feet.

Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, marital status, caregiving by grandparents, language and ability to speak English, ancestry, place of birth, citizenship status and year of entry to the United States, migration, place of work, journey to work, school enrollment, educational attainment, veteran status, disability, employment status, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Housing items include housing unit vacancy status, housing unit tenure (owner/renter), number of rooms, number of bedrooms, year moved into unit, occupants per room, units in structure, year structure built, heating fuel, telephone service, plumbing and kitchen facilities, vehicles available, value of home, rent, and shelter costs. The information in SF3 is presented in 813 tables, one variable per table cell, plus additional variables with geographic information. However, only 409 of these tables are shown for the block group and higher levels of geography. The remaining 404 tables, which are shown for the census tract and higher levels of geography, were excluded from the block group subset. Cases in the summary file data are classified by levels of observation, known as "summary levels" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature. The block group subset comprises all of the cases in the SF3 data for summary level 150. Five data files are provided with this collection. There is a block group subset for each of the four census regions (Northeast, Midwest, South, and West), plus a national subset that covers all of the regions. The SF1 Supplement file was created for three reasons: (1) to provide users with urban/rural data at the block level (not available on the Summary File 1 State files [ICPSR #3194]), (2) to provide users and American FactFinder with a source for updating SF1 tables P2 and H2 with urban and rural summary counts for all SF1 state summary levels, and (3) to provide users with SF1 tables P2 and H2 for three summary levels (085, 090, and 100) that were not available prior to urban/rural delineation.

Prepared by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, this data collection consists of selected subsets extracted from the Census of Population and Housing, 2000 [United States]: Summary File 1, Advance National (ICPSR 3325). Summary File 1 data contain information compiled from the questions asked of all people and of every housing unit enumerated in Census 2000: questions covering sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, type of living quarters (household/group quarters), household relationship, housing unit vacancy status, and housing unit tenure (owner/renter). The information is presented in 286 tables, which are tabulated for every case, i.e., every geographic unit represented in the data. There is one variable per table cell, plus additional variables with geographic information. All cases in the summary file data are classified by levels of observation, known as "summary levels," in the Census Bureau's nomenclature. These levels of observation served as the selection criteria for the subsets. Each subset comprises all of the cases in one of five summary levels: the nation (summary level 010), states (summary level 040), counties (summary level 050), places (summary level 160), and five-digit ZIP code tabulation areas (summary level 860). Three files are supplied for each subset except the last. There is a single, relatively large, file that contains all of the tables in the data, plus two smaller files, each of which contains approximately one half of the tables. For the five-digit ZIP code tabulation areas, there is only one file, which contains all of the tables.
