The purpose of this study is to undertake a comparative study of higher education indices in China and between the 31 administrative divisions of China with the international evaluation system. The analysis includes a comparison of higher education indices between China and six continents and several key countries in the world, as well as a comparison between internal regions in China and Malaysia, both of which are in Asia. The numbers and rankings of higher education institutes (HEIs) of various countries and regions listed in the QS World University Rankings (QS) over 13 years from 2010 to 2023 form the basis of corresponding higher education indices obtained through several calculation formulas. These indices are the QS Higher Education Density Index (QSHEDI), QS Higher Education Quality Index (QSHEQI), QS Higher Education Composite Index (QSHEI), and Relative QS Higher Education Composite Index (RQSHEI), and they reflect the index calculation results of the density, quality, and composite of higher education relative to the regional population. Based on the comparative analysis of the indices from multiple perspectives, this study found that there is a large gap between higher education in China and other countries, and there is also a significant imbalance in the geographical distribution of higher education resources among Chinese provinces based on the population proportion and economic impact. These disparities will hurt the sustainable development of higher education in China. Therefore, paying more attention to the international evaluation system and recognition standards like the QS Rankings becomes necessary to guide the balanced development of higher education among provinces according to the population proportion. It is also vital to improve the international influence of HEIs in China according to internationally recognized requirements so that China's higher education can develop sustainably in the process of global internationalization.

Revenue for colleges and universities in China is expected to grow at an annualized 2.9% over the five years through 2024 to reach $29.3 billion, including a 2.4% rise in the current year. A substantial amount of industry revenue comes from government subsidies, and increasing attention to higher education has been driving the development of the industry. The industry comprises 4,730 institutions, employing 2.5 million people with an estimated payroll of almost $15.6 billion. Public universities and colleges are public welfare and not-for-profit.This industry also benefits from international students studying at Chinese universities (i.e., exports). About 526,000 international students studying in China are expected to generate $1.7 billion for the industry in 2024. Higher education imports (i.e., Chinese students at foreign institutions) are expected to total $9.9 billion in 2024. In 2024, an estimated 820,173 Chinese students are studying at foreign higher education institutions.Revenue for colleges and universities in China is forecast to increase by an annualized 1.8% over the five years through 2029 to reach $32.0 billion. The main growth drivers will be steady increases in demand for higher education and rising government funding levels. The continued globalization of China's economy will facilitate frequent international exchanges and cooperation between institutions, raising demand for higher education in China and boosting industry’s competitiveness. In recent years, some Chinese universities have performed outstandingly in international rankings. In the QS World University Rankings, some universities have been increasing yearly, reflecting their improvement in education quality, research capabilities, and internationalization level. In addition, Chinese universities have carried out large-scale disciplinary and professional adjustments to meet the needs of social development and industrial transformation. These adjustments include adding and removing majors, as well as transforming and upgrading existing majors.
With a score of 92.8, Tsinghua University in China secured the top spot in the Asian university ranking in 2024. This higher education institution beat the likes of Seoul National University and the University of Tokyo to the number one position. Interestingly, the overall scores of the leading universities in Asia have increased significantly throughout recent years, thus giving the region a reputation as being home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities. Improving higher education A tertiary education in the Asia-Pacific region has become more attractive for prospective domestic and international students, likely due to the surging level of academia demonstrated by Asian universities. A feat which is most probably due to raised levels of expenditure invested into the Asia-Pacific education sector. Singapore and South Korea are just some of the countries which exhibit these increasing investments. Investments likely made in an attempt to produce more qualified individuals, who can stimulate the evolving industries throughout Asia-Pacific. Life after educationNot only does Asian higher education boast impressive results, but it appears the Asia-Pacific region is becoming more enticing for both domestic and international post-graduates. Many Asian countries are offering better employment opportunities and salaries than their western competitors. Countries such as Taiwan stand in the foreground as those who have initiated recruitment schemes in order to secure international graduates from other Asian regions and thus, encourage intra-regional relations across Asia-Pacific. With more graduates opting to settle in Asia, it does not seem too surprising that Asian cities have been deemed as some of the most liveable in the world.

The total enrollment rate in tertiary education increased from less than ten percent in the late 1990s to nearly 60.2 percent by 2023. The number of university teachers grew accordingly, keeping the average university student to university teacher ratio around 18 to 1. What are the leading universities in China? Mainland China has two higher education institutions continuously ranked among the top 50 universities in the world. Tsinghua University in Beijing is the leading higher education school in China and one of the most reputable ones globally. Peking University, the second best in the country, is the oldest national university founded in 1898 as the Imperial University of Peking and besides its academic reputation is also famous for one of the most beautiful university campuses. Fudan University in Shanghai, University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Nanjing University are other prestigious schools consistently competing in China's top 10 university rankings.

Nowadays, two Chinese institutions, Tsinghua University and Peking University, regularly reach the highest positions in international university rankings, while a broad group of institutions are continuously improving into the midfield of international universities. However, competition for admission to the elite universities is fierce and the quality of many lower level colleges is not comparable to higher international standards. Types of tertiary education in China China generally differentiates between universities, providing four-year bachelor, master and doctorate programs, and higher vocational colleges, providing more practically oriented three-year, short-cycle degree programs. In addition, it is possible to obtain degrees at public institutes for adult education and from online and self-learning courses provided by public institutions. The number of students enrolled in degree programs at all different levels of public tertiary education in China reached more than **** million in 2023. In addition to public institutions, there is also a growing number of students enrolled at private colleges and universities. However, these private institutions are generally not as esteemed and work on a lower level than their public counterparts.

BackgroundThis study outlines a comprehensive analysis of the primary characteristics of managing research integrity (RI) in domestic colleges and universities in China. RI education in China consists primarily of soft advocacy, with no hard requirements or continuous and systematic support. Together with other stakeholders, such as funders and publishers, higher education institutions (e.g., colleges and universities) are one of the vital actors that have a lot of influence on RI promotion and implementation among researchers. However, the literature on the regulation of RI policies in China's universities is limited.MethodsWe investigate the top 50 colleges and universities in the 2021 Best Chinese Universities Ranking. Their guidance and policy documents on RI were collected via their official websites. By integrating the use of scientometrics analysis, including descriptive statistical analysis, inductive content analysis, and quantitative analysis, we examine whether and how these higher education institutions respond to national policies in a timely manner, especially in terms of their frequency of updates, topic clustering analysis, terms clustering analysis, content aggregation. To further understand the composition mechanism and the main working systems of university RI management organizations, we conducted in-depth research on the organizational functions, meeting system, staff composition mechanism, and scientific research misconduct acceptance and investigation mechanisms.ResultsThe regulations on the treatment of RI in China's universities have, in response to the government's call to establish their own management policies and working mechanisms, maintained a zero-tolerance stance on research misconduct. The sampled universities listed the definition and principles of misconduct practices, investigation procedures, and sanctions of research misconduct in their own policy documents. Some of them listed inappropriate research practices All 50 sampled universities have formed relevant organizations responsible for RI management, they all provide the detailed regulations of the committees. Yet, there is still a need to further define Questionable Research Practice, foster higher standards for integrity in research and, establish and improve an efficient, authoritative, well-restrained and supervision working mechanism for organizations responsible for RI treatment.
Tribhuvan University in Nepal had approximately 422 thousand full-time students in 2021. This was unquestionably the highest number of students of any Asia Pacific university, leaving Chinese and Thai universities lagging behind in terms of university student numbers. Despite the huge influx of students enrolled in Tribhuvan University, Australia still saw a dramatic surge in the number of Nepalese international students from 2015 onwards. This alludes to the fact that an international tertiary education was just as favorable as a domestic one. Interestingly, most of the universities which made the ranking for the highest number of students were situated in China. An Asia Pacific education Universities across the Asia Pacific region are experiencing a dramatic rise in student population. As a home to powerful and developing economies, it appears more students are eager to secure places in the higher education sectors which boast huge economic potential. China stands as the most popular country for international students in Asia and third most popular for international students globally. The large majority of international students in China are not reliant on Chinese governmental funding from scholarships and are self-funded. Therefore, huge investments are put into the Chinese economy. Other countries such as Thailand are too experiencing increased GDP contributions from the education sector. Despite the growing number of international students deciding to complete their higher education in China, many of the domestic Chinese students choose to study elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region. This is prevalent in the great influx of Chinese students arriving in Australia to study. Qualifications As a higher education in the Asia Pacific region is becoming more popular, initiatives have been set up to ensure qualifications are recognized throughout the many countries across Asia Pacific. The Tokyo Convention – an agreement made between Japan, South Korea, Australia, China and New Zealand – is designed to enable student and academic mobility. Simultaneously, the convention endorses the recognition of higher education qualifications throughout the Asia Pacific region. This in turn appears to encourage more domestic and international students to consider tertiary education in Asia Pacific, as their qualification will likely be recognized in their home countries and elsewhere in the region.

According to an educational survey conducted between January and February 2022, the United Kingdom was the most attractive destination for Chinese students wishing to study abroad. Back in 2015, North America and Australia were generally more attractive to Chinese students than Europe and Asia, a situation that has changed today.
The rising demand for international education
In recent years, receiving an international education was no longer a niche reserved for the affluent class in China. Thanks to the country's strong economic growth in the last few decades, more families can afford the expense of studying abroad. Between 2000 and 2019, the number of Chinese students studying abroad increased 17-fold, to more than 700,000 in 2019.
The increasing number of international students from China's expanding middle-class has led to a diversification of study abroad destinations. More affordable programs such as a one-year master's in the United Kingdom, and programs in Japan, Germany and France emerged as the preferred choices for many Chinese students.
The United Kingdom as an attractive destination
Despite a significant drop in the overall number of Chinese students studying abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent travel restrictions, more than 150,000 Chinese students studied in the UK in the 2021/22 academic year. This popularity can be attributed to a combination of strong rankings in university league tables, along with relatively inexpensive fees compared to those in the United States and Australia.
