Measurement technique
To measure the rank and respective trends, we initially gathered data from the five most recent American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates. We then analyzed and categorized the data for each of the racial categories identified by the U.S. Census Bureau. Based on the required racial category classification, we calculated the rank. For geographies with no population reported for the chosen race, we did not assign a rank and excluded them from the list. It is possible that a small population exists but was not reported or captured due to limitations or variations in Census data collection and reporting. We ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified racial categories and do not rely on any ethnicity classification, unless explicitly required. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

Description

In New York City, the population of Chinese Americans has grown faster than that of any other minority racial/ethnic group, and now this community constitutes almost half of all Chinese Americans living in the northeastern United States. Nonetheless, scant research attention has been given to Chinese American ethnic enclaves and little is known about the health status of their residents. This study aims to help address this gap in the literature by: (1) improving our understanding of the spatial settlement of Chinese Americans living in New York City from 2000 to 2016; and (2) assessing associations between a New York City resident's likelihood of living in a Chinese American enclave and their access to health care and perceived health status, two measures of community health. In support of this aim, this study establishes a robust criterion for defining ethnic enclaves at the Census tract level in New York City as the communities of interest in this paper. An ethnic enclave is defined as an area at the Census tract level with high dissimilarity and a spatial cluster of Chinese Americans. The spatial findings were that Chinese Americans in New York City were least segregated from other Asian American residents, somewhat segregated from White residents, and most segregated from Black residents. Also, the population density of Chinese Americans increased since 2000, as reflected by their declining exposure index with other Asian Americans. Results from logistic regression indicated that the probability of living in a Chinese American enclave was negatively associated with positive self-perception of general health and positively associated with delays in receiving health care. For Chinese American residents of New York City, living in an ethnic enclave was also associated with both lower socioeconomic status and poorer community health.

Description

The U.S. Census defines Asian Americans as individuals having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent (U.S. Office of Management and Budget, 1997). As a broad racial category, Asian Americans are the fastest-growing minority group in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). The growth rate of 42.9% in Asian Americans between 2000 and 2010 is phenomenal given that the corresponding figure for the U.S. total population is only 9.3% (see Figure 1). Currently, Asian Americans make up 5.6% of the total U.S. population and are projected to reach 10% by 2050. It is particularly notable that Asians have recently overtaken Hispanics as the largest group of new immigrants to the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2015). The rapid growth rate and unique challenges as a new immigrant group call for a better understanding of the social and health needs of the Asian American population.

Description

Relative concentration of the Southern California region's Asian American population. The variable ASIANALN records all individuals who select Asian as their SOLE racial identity in response to the Census questionnaire, regardless of their response to the Hispanic ethnicity question. Both Hispanic and non-Hispanic in the Census questionnaire are potentially associated with the Asian race alone.

"Relative concentration" is a measure that compares the proportion of population within each Census block group data unit that identify as ASIANALN alone to the proportion of all people that live within the 13,312 block groups in the Southern California RRK region that identify as ASIANALN alone. Example: if 5.2% of people in a block group identify as HSPBIPOC, the block group has twice the proportion of ASIANALN individuals compared to the Southern California RRK region (2.6%), and more than three times the proportion compared to the entire state of California (1.6%). If the local proportion is twice the regional proportion, then ASIANALN individuals are highly concentrated locally.

Asian Population, Asian Population as Percent of Total Asian Population of Bottineau County, ND, Asian Population as Percent of Total Population of Cities in Bottineau County, ND

Measurement technique

SSR's primer selection SSR site primers RUMM017, RUMM018, RUMM020, RUMM021, RUMM032, RUMM034, and RUMM047 were created by Wang et al.[45], and all forward primers had a cac sequence tag (5'- cacgacgttgtaaaacgac -3') and 6-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) added to the 5' end. The PCR products were then delivered to Tsingke Biotechnology Co., Ltd., and electrophoresis was performed using a 3730xl DNA analyzer. Based on the known traits (size range, repeating motifs) of a single microsatellite region, the microsatellites included in the assemblage are chosen. Reaction system: 25 ml of 2X Accurate Taq Master Mix, 15 ml of template DNA and RNase-free water, 1 ml of forward primer, and 1 ml of reverse primer. Reaction conditions: predenaturation at 95 °C for 15 min; denaturation at 94 °C for 30 s; annealing for 1 min 30 s; extension at 72 °C for 1 min 30 s (a total of 35 cycles); and extension at 72 °C for 10 min.

Description

The project is the SSRs data of 12 populations in China and North America. The Chinese populations include Panjin (PJ), Tianjin (TJ), Tangshan (TS), Lianyungang (LYG), Yancheng (YC), Zhoushan (ZS), Putian (PT), Zhangzhou (ZZ), and Zhanjiang (ZJ) and the North American populations include Commonwealth of Virginia (VI), Lange Eylandt (LE), and Rhode Island (RL). The markers involved in this data are 7, including RUMM017, RUMM018, RUMM020, RUMM021, RUMM032, RUMM034, and RUMM047.
