    Description

According to the UN's World Happiness Report, China's happiness index ranged at 5.97 points in 2024. China ranked 60th out of 143 countries. Finland, Denmark, and other European countries held the top spots in the ranking, while Afghanistan stayed at the bottom of the list. What is the happiness index? The happiness index is based on a Cantril ladder survey which is carried out annually worldwide by the polling company Gallup. Nationally representative samples of respondents are asked to value the quality of their lives at the survey moment on a 0 to 10 scale, with the worst possible life as zero and the best possible life as ten. The first World Happiness Report was published in 2012, and since then, governments are increasingly using its insights to orient public policies towards happiness. Surge in happiness in China In 2024, the happiness index in China was the highest since the beginning of the survey series. The growth in the sense of happiness has been consistent over the years except for a short period of 2018-2019. As happiness is hard to quantify, the reasons behind the dip in the curve during that time can only be hypothesized. The happiness index of 5.19 points in 2019, which was in the lower 50 percentile, did not seem to correlate with any of the usual suspects: the GDP growth, pollution levels, corruption or the perception of it, or even income inequality. The possible factors that could have affected people’s happiness were unemployment, insufficient social safety net, and several political issues. However, the country saw a surge in the sense of happiness from 2021 onwards. Successful containment of the COVID-19 pandemic that gave a greater feeling of security, fast economic recovery, and increase in the national pride could have been a few of the reasons behind the recent rising optimism in China.

In the second quarter of 2024, the income confidence index value of urban depositors in China was 45.6. Since the index value was above 50 for the years 2018 and 2019, urban depositors in China had on average positive expectations about the future development of their income. However, in the first quarter of 2020, the index value did not cross the 50 threshold which indicated that the respondents on average had negative income expectations. The same quarter saw the outbreak of COVID-19 in China which could have had an impact on income expectations. The confidence index has again fallen below the 50 percent in Q2 2022.

    Description

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the Producer Price Index (PPI) of agricultural products in China ranged at 100.5 index points (same quarter of previous year = 100). After a considerable price decrease between the first quarter of 2020 and the third quarter of 2021, inflation picked up in the second and third quarter of 2022, mainly driven by rising pork prices, but also supported by a price increase of farm crops. During 2023, agricultural prices decreased again. The Producer Prices Index The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the average change in selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. In combination with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the PPI is used as an indicator to identify economic inflation or deflation. In contrast to CPI, which measures price levels of end consumers, the PPI measures the output price change from the perspective of sellers. In this sense, the Producer Price Index of agricultural products reflects changes in selling price received by farmers. Agricultural producer prices in China According to the graph at hand, producer prices for agricultural products picked up considerably in the second quarter of 2019. Inflation peaked in the first quarter of 2020 and fell back to a normal level in the fourth quarter of 2020. This development was mainly caused by an increase of Chinese producer prices for livestock, which were driven by the outbreak of the swine fever in 2019. The PPI for fishery in China fluctuated only slightely at around 100 index points during the same period, while producer prices for forestry products in China even saw a partially negative price development. During the third quarter of 2022, however, prices for livestock products grew considerably, while prices for farm crops in China indicated a moderate price increase.
