    The Chinook database is available on GitHub. It’s available for various DBMSs including MySQL, SQL Server, SQL Server Compact, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, and of course, SQLite.

    The dataset ds180_Chinook_pnts is a product of the CalFish Adult Salmonid Abundance Database. Data in this shapefile are collected from point features, such as dams and hatcheries. Some escapement monitoring locations, such as spawning stock surveys, are logically represented by linear features. See the companion linear feature shapefile ds181_Chinook_ln for information collected from stream reaches.The CalFish Abundance Database contains a comprehensive collection of anadromous fisheries abundance information. Beginning in 1998, the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the National Marine Fisheries Service, began a cooperative project aimed at collecting, archiving, and entering into standardized electronic formats, the wealth of information generated by fisheries resource management agencies and tribes throughout California.The data format provides for sufficient detail to convey the relative accuracy of each population trend index record yet is simple and straight forward enough to be suited for public use. For those interested in more detail the database offers hyperlinks to digital copies of the original documents used to compile the information. In this way the database serves as an information hub directing the user to additional supporting information. This offers utility to field biologists and others interested in obtaining information for more in-depth analysis. Hyperlinks, built into the spatial data attribute tables used in the BIOS and CalFish I-map viewers, open the detailed index data archived in the on-line CalFish database application. Annual Chinook salmon in-river escapement indices that were, in many cases, eight to ten years behind are now current though 2009. In some cases, multiple datasets were consolidated into a single, more comprehensive, dataset to more closely reflect how data are reported in the California Department of Fish and Game standard index, Grandtab.Extensive data are currently available in the CalFish Abundance Database for California Chinook, coho, and steelhead. Major data categories include adult abundance population estimates, actual fish and/or carcass counts, counts of fish collected at dams, weirs, or traps, and redd counts.     NOAA Fisheries is a cooperator with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Lummi, Nooksack, and Stillaguamish Tribes in a 10-year program to rebuild the South Fork Nooksack River spring Chinook and Stillaguamish River fall Chinook stocks through a captive broodstock program. The fork length to the nearest mm and weight to the nearest gram of fish is recorded on an approximately annual basis.

    Description

    Concern over the status of chinook salmon on the Pacific Coast, and particularly in the north (Fig. 1), has become more prevalent in recent years due to an apparent decline in stock size. This concern emphasizes the need for better conservation, improved management techniques and stock enhancement where feasible. However, prior to recommending measures for better control of the resource, it is appropriate that all information on chinook salmon stocks be assembled into readable and applicable manuscript reports. This report focuses on one area of the Pacific Coast - the North Coastal Branch, comprising Statistical Areas 1 to 5.

    Many species that undergo long breeding migrations, such as anadromous fishes, face highly heterogeneous environments along their migration corridors and at their spawning sites. These environmental challenges encountered at different life stages may act as strong selective pressures and drive local adaptation. However, the relative influence of environmental conditions along the migration corridor compared to the conditions at spawning sites on driving selection is still unknown. In this study, we performed genome-environment associations (GEA) to understand the relationship between landscape and environmental conditions driving selection in seven populations of the anadromous Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)–a species of important economic, social, cultural and ecological value–in the Columbia River basin.     Description
    1. Climate change and human activities are transforming river flows globally, with potentially large consequences for freshwater life. To help inform watershed and flow management, there is a need for empirical studies linking flows and fish productivity.
    2. We tested the effects of river conditions and other factors on 22 years of Chinook salmon productivity in a watershed in British Columbia, Canada.
    3. Freshwater conditions during adult salmon migration and spawning, as well as during juvenile rearing, explained a large amount of variation in productivity.
    4. August river flows while salmon fry reared had the strongest effect on productivity – our model predicted that cohorts that experience 50% below average flow in the August of rearing have 21% lower productivity.
    5. These contemporary relationships are set within long-term changes in climate, land use, and hydrology. Over the last century, average August river discharge decreased by 26%, air temperatures warmed, and water withdrawals increased. 17% of the watershed was logged in the last 20 years.
    6. Our results suggest that, in order to remain stable, this Chinook salmon population being assessed for legal protection requires substantially higher August flow than previously recommended. Changing flow regimes – driven by watershed impacts and climate change – can threaten imperiled fish populations.

    Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     Context

    The dataset tabulates the Chinook population distribution across 18 age groups. It lists the population in each age group along with the percentage population relative of the total population for Chinook. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Chinook by age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group in Chinook.

    Key observations

    The largest age group in Chinook, MT was for the group of age 10 to 14 years years with a population of 150 (10.27%), according to the ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates.     Description

    Since 2014, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has conducted annual Chinook salmon redd surveys. The objective of this data collection effort is to quantify and understand potential shits in redd distribution and potential habitat differences between historic and restored sites. The redd surveys are conducted in the uppermost 16 miles of the lower Feather River though have been concentrated in the uppermost two miles of the lower Feather River in, and adjacent to the Gravel Supplementation Areas (GSAs). Redd surveys are conducted less frequently in the 14 miles downstream of the GSAs. Surveys typically begin in mid-September at the onset of spawning and generally conclude at the end of November. This dataset represents an extensive time series that could be used to identify habitat conditions where Chinook salmon spawn, how these conditions have changed over time, especially in areas where restoration has occurred. These data were published to support the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes Program.
