Map showing land uses in the City of Austin jurisdictions. Upated during October of even years.
The land inventory is based on several sources. The polygon geography is taken from appraisal district parcel layers merged together. A land use inventory is performed by classifying land according to a coding system that reflects the primary improvements (buildings or structures) on each parcel. Most of the land use information is attached through a GIS Union from past land use inventories. Undeveloped parcels are checked against building permit, aerial photos, and appraisal records, generally collected during the fall, or when data was made available. Information is collected only in the City of Austin’s Full, Limited Purpose, and Extra-territorial jurisdictions, and not entire counties.

City of Austin Open Data Terms of Use https://data.austintexas.gov/stories/s/ranj-cccq This dataset was created to depict approximate tree canopy cover for all land within the City of Austin's "full watershed regulation area." Intended for planning purposes and measuring citywide percent canopy. Definition: Tree canopy is defined as the layer of leaves, branches, and stems of trees that cover the ground when viewed from above. Methods: The 2022 tree canopy layer was derived from satellite imagery (Maxar) and aerial imagery (NAIP). Images were used to extract tree canopy into GIS vector features. First, a “visual recognition engine” generated the vector features. The engine used machine learning algorithms to detect and label image pixels as tree canopy. Then using prior knowledge of feature geometries, more modeling algorithms were used to predict and transform probability maps of labeled pixels into finished vector polygons depicting tree canopy. The resulting features were reviewed and edited through manual interpretation by GIS professionals. When appropriate, NAIP 2022 aerial imagery supplemented satellite images that had cloud cover, and a manual editing process made sure tree canopy represented 2022 conditions. Finally, an independent accuracy assessment was performed by the City of Austin and the Texas A&M Forest Service for quality assurance. GIS professionals assessed agreement between the tree canopy data and its source satellite imagery. An overall accuracy of 98% was found. Only 23 errors were found out of a total 1,000 locations reviewed. These were mostly omission errors (e.g. not including canopy in this dataset when canopy is shown in the satellite or aerial image). Best efforts were made to ensure ground-truth locations contained a tree on the ground. To ensure this, location data were used from City of Austin and Texas A&M Forest Service databases. Analysis: The City of Austin measures tree canopy using the calculation: acres of tree canopy divided by acres of land. The area of interest for the land acres is evaluated at the City of Austin's jurisdiction including Full Purpose, Limited Purpose, and Extraterritorial jurisdictions as of May 2023. New data show, in 2022, tree canopy covered 41% of the total land area within Austin's city limits (using city limit boundaries May 2023 and included in the download as layer name "city_of_austin_2023"). 160,046.50 canopy acres (2022) / 395,037.53 land acres = 40.51% ~41%. This compares to 36% last measured in 2018, and a historical average that’s also hovered around 36%. The time period between 2018 and 2022 saw a 5 percentage point change resulting in over 19K acres of canopy gained (estimated). Data Disclaimer: It's possible changes in percent canopy over the years is due to annexation and improved data methods (e.g. higher resolution imagery, AI, software used, etc.) in addition to actual in changes in tree canopy cover on the ground. For planning purposes only. Dataset does not account for individual trees, tree species nor any metric for tree canopy height. Tree canopy data is provided in vector GIS format housed in a Geodatabase. Download and unzip the folder to get started. Please note, errors may exist in this dataset due to the variation in species composition and land use found across the study area. Parcels affected by the adoption of the 2015 International Wildland Urban-Interface Code (WUIC), which was adopted by Austin City Council April9, 2020, and implementation beginning January 1st, 2021. Parcels that are within 1.5 miles of a wildland area greater than 750 acres and parcels within 150 feet of a wildland area greater than 40 acres are wildland_urban_interface_code parcels. Parcels designated as "preserves" have been removed and are not subject to the WUI code.Dataset was created in 2020 by Austin Fire Department Wildfire Division. It was derived from the most recent Travis County Appraisal District (TCAD) Parcels, and queried based upon their planar distance to wildland areas. Wildlands are defined as undeveloped continuous areas,. The wildlands feature class is maintained by the Austin Fire Department and is derived from the City of Austin Planimetric dataset, also known as impervious cover data, and are updated every two years. ArcGIS Pro version 2 software was used to create this dataset. The data is meant to be ingested by a GIS system. Changes to the City of Austin & LTD jurisdiction warrant an update to this dataset. The data is scheduled to be updated every two years.Included in the attributes are parcel condition variables that determine the parcel's "fire hazard severity' class. These include the composite score of three variables: slope score, fuel score, and WUI class (proximity). Slope score was determined by the average degree slope of the area within each parcel and classified as less than 10%, 10% to 25%, or greater then 25%. Fuel score was determined by the average fuel class area within each parcels as defined by the Austin Travis County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and classified as light, medium, or heavy fuels. Proximity class was defined by the proximity of each parcel to wildlands, either as within 1.5 miles of wildlands greater than 750 acres, or within 150 feet of wildlands greater than 40 acres.Description of data fieldsGLOBALID_1 = Used for Global IdentificationOBJECTID = Object IdentificationSLOPE_DEGREE = The average slope of each parcel in degreesFIRE_HAZARD_SEVERITY = The "fire hazard severity" class of each parcelPROXIMITY_CLASS = The proximity class of each parcelSLOPE_CLASS = The slope classification of each parcelFUEL_CLASS = The fuel class of each parcelCREATED_BY = Creators nameCREATED_DATE = Date createdMODIFIED_BY = Modifiers nameMODIFIED_DATE = Date modifiedUNIQUE_ID = Unique Identification number (mirror object id)Shape_Area = Shape areaShape_Length = Shape lengthIteration ID: Parcels_AustinLTD4 2020Contact: Steven Casebeer at Steven.casebeer@austintexas.gov | Austin Fire Department Wildfire Division

Land Use 2010 is a parcel based, land use map representing land use conditions for the City of Austin and surrounding areas. Previous studies were made in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2003. The 2010 study area included all of Travis County and parts of Hays, Williamson, Bastrop and Blanco Counties. Land use parcel geometry was based on the City of Austin's 2003 Land Use Study and City of Austin base map or county appraisal district GIS and CAD files. Historical land use data from previous studies, especially 2003, county tax appraisal district information, aerial photographs or other land-use related information was used to characterize the 2010 land uses. City of Austin staff, local planning or engineering consultants, researchers, students or area residents can use land use data for water resource research, planning, management, infrastructure and transportation planning, development, comprehensive or neighborhood planning and spatial analysis. Specifically the 2010 land use layer can be used to study land use change and development patterns and as an input to water quality, flood, erosion or transportation models. The following includes some, but not all data limitations: "Land use is current as of approximately September, 2010", "Parcels along the study area boundary may represent only a portion of the original", "Parcels adjacent to area lakes differ from those in the 2003 Land Use Study," "Land use polygons may differ from tax appraisal district parcels", "Corrections to the original 2010 Land Use Study will be shown in periodic updates", and "Methods used to characterize land use in the latest study differ from previous studies and may not be directly comparable." The City of Clarksville incorporated area has changed over time due to annexations by the City. GIS mapping capabilities have also progressed over time. An evaluation of the City Boundary was conducted in 2018 due to new annexations, Growth Plan Amendments, 2020 Census, and known discrepancies with the Parcel dataset managed by the Montgomery County Tax Assessor's office. The Clarksville-Montgomery County Regional Planning Commission is responsible for processing annexation requests and so has a need to update the City boundary. The Regional Planning Commission worked with Austin Peay State University' s GIS Center to identify discrepancies between the current City Boundary and the parcel data. A number of parcels are partially within the City and partially with the unincorporated portion of the county. The split parcels and other deviations were documented by the GIS Center. The GIS Center presented the information to the Regional Planning Commission who then further investigated each discrepancy and going through each corresponding annexation's legal description and/or map when available. Several discrepancies were due to original mapping not snapped to parcel lines or conducted at the same scale causing slivers. After reviewing and correcting erroneous slivers the Regional Planning Commission sent the GIS files to the Tax Assessor's office for review. The Tax Assessor's office reviewed the boundary and verified changes with plat information they utilize. The update was completed in May, 2019. Annexations A-1-2019 and A-2-2019 were passed by City Council on July 2, 2019 and became effective August 1, 2019. Annexation A-3-2019 was passed by City Council on August 1, 2019 and became effective August 30, 2019. Annexation A-1-2020 was passed by City Council on November 5, 2020 and became effective December 5, 2020.
78744 Zip Code Feature Layer This feature layer represents the 78744 zip code boundary within Travis County and is used in this StoryMap to provide geographic context for Austin Public Health (APH) Community Health Worker (CHW) outreach efforts. On June 8, 2024, APH CHW Strike Teams conducted a targeted West Nile Virus (WNV) education campaign in the 78744 zip code, an area with high social vulnerability and environmental factors that may contribute to increased mosquito activity and disease transmission. This outreach aimed to:
Assess community awareness of WNV transmission and prevention strategies Distribute educational materials on mosquito control and personal protection Engage with residents to encourage proactive public health behaviors
Why the 78744 Zip Code? The 78744 zip code was identified as a priority area for WNV education due to:
Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) Considerations – Populations with higher vulnerability may have limited access to health resources or face greater risks from vector-borne diseases. Environmental Risk Factors – Standing water, dense vegetation, and urban drainage patterns that may support higher mosquito populations. Historical Public Health Needs – Previous outreach efforts have highlighted the importance of continued engagement in this area.
Feature Layer Use This feature layer helps visualize the geographic scope of the CHW outreach efforts and supports public health decision-making by aligning intervention strategies with spatial data and community needs. Future applications of this layer may include:
Mapping mosquito surveillance data and environmental risk factors Overlaying additional public health data for targeted outreach Informing response strategies for future vector-borne disease outbreaks
By incorporating geographic data into public health initiatives, Austin Public Health can ensure a more data-driven, equitable, and effective approach to disease prevention and community engagement.
