This dataset reflects reported incidents of crime (with the exception of murders where data exists for each victim) that occurred in the City of Chicago from 2001 to present, minus the most recent seven days. Data is extracted from the Chicago Police Department's CLEAR (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) system. In order to protect the privacy of crime victims, addresses are shown at the block level only and specific locations are not identified. Healthy Chicago Equity Zones is an initiative of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) to organize and support hyperlocal, community-led efforts that promote health and racial equity. Chicago is divided into six Equity Zones, through which the City collaborates with regional and neighborhood organizations to address issues of common concern – like COVID-19 vaccine distribution, health care access, violence prevention, and food security – and improve quality of life at the neighborhood level. Special Service Areas (SSA) boundaries in Chicago. The Special Service Area program is a mechanism used to fund expanded services and programs through a localized property tax levy within contiguous industrial, commercial and residential areas. The enhanced services and programs are in addition to services and programs currently provided through the city. SSA-funded projects could include, but are not limited to, security services, area marketing and advertising assistance, promotional activities such as parades and festivals, or any variety of small scale capital improvements that could be supported through a modest property tax levy. Areas of Chicago, based on census tracts, that are the most socioeconomically disadvantaged, for the purpose of promoting equitable hiring within areas of economic need. Qualifying areas were identified using three criteria, based on data from the 2014 American Community Survey: household income, poverty rate, and unemployment rate.
These area designations are used for workforce bid incentives for City contracts administered by the Department of Procurement Services. They will also be used for workforce requirements for construction at the temporary casino facility, as agreed to in the Host Community Agreement between Bally’s and the City of Chicago.
The designations are made under Section 2-92-390 of the City of Chicago code.

These permits typically are permits to block or otherwise affect public streets in some way. Because all permits start as applications, this dataset also serves as a list of permits granted. The Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) was created in the New Deal Era and trained many home appraisers in the 1930s. The HOLC created a neighborhood ranking system infamously known today as redlining. Local real estate developers and appraisers in over 200 cities assigned grades to residential neighborhoods. These maps and neighborhood ratings set the rules for decades of real estate practices. The grades ranged from A to D. A was traditionally colored in green, B was traditionally colored in blue, C was traditionally colored in yellow, and D was traditionally colored in red. A (Best): Always upper- or upper-middle-class White neighborhoods that HOLC defined as posing minimal risk for banks and other mortgage lenders, as they were "ethnically homogeneous" and had room to be further developed.B (Still Desirable): Generally nearly or completely White, U.S. -born neighborhoods that HOLC defined as "still desirable" and sound investments for mortgage lenders.C (Declining): Areas where the residents were often working-class and/or first or second generation immigrants from Europe. These areas often lacked utilities and were characterized by older building stock.D (Hazardous): Areas here often received this grade because they were "infiltrated" with "undesirable populations" such as Jewish, Asian, Mexican, and Black families. These areas were more likely to be close to industrial areas and to have older housing.Banks received federal backing to lend money for mortgages based on these grades. Many banks simply refused to lend to areas with the lowest grade, making it impossible for people in many areas to become homeowners. While this type of neighborhood classification is no longer legal thanks to the Fair Housing Act of 1968 (which was passed in large part due to the activism and work of the NAACP and other groups), the effects of disinvestment due to redlining are still observable today. For example, the health and wealth of neighborhoods in Chicago today can be traced back to redlining (Chicago Tribune). In addition to formerly redlined neighborhoods having fewer resources such as quality schools, access to fresh foods, and health care facilities, new research from the Science Museum of Virginia finds a link between urban heat islands and redlining (Hoffman, et al., 2020). This layer comes out of that work, specifically from University of Richmond's Digital Scholarship Lab. The underlying algorithm to create the dataset calculates the percent of a census tract that falls within the boundaries of a given ward. Given that census tracts and ward boundaries are not aligned, these figures should be considered an estimate.

There are different approaches in common use for displaying Hispanic or Latino population counts. In this dataset, following the approach taken by the Census Bureau, a person who identifies as Hispanic or Latino will also be counted in the race category with which they identify. However, again following the Census Bureau data, there is also a column for White Not Hispanic or Latino.

This dataset contains all current and active business licenses issued by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. APPLICATION TYPE: 'ISSUE' is the record associated with the initial license application. 'RENEW' is a subsequent renewal record. All renewal records are created with a term start date and term expiration date. 'C_LOC' is a change of location record. It means the business moved. 'C_CAPA' is a change of capacity record. Only a few license types my file this type of application. 'C_EXPA' only applies to businesses that have liquor licenses. It means the business location expanded.
LICENSE STATUS: 'AAI' means the license was issued.

Sociologist Roderick D. McKenzie taught at Ohio State in the early 1920s while completing his dissertation on the urban and neighborhood geography of Columbus. One of McKenzie's maps delineated themes common with the Chicago School of Sociology urban geography focus: race and ethnicity. McKenzie's data provides a snapshot of the racial and ethnic geography of Columbus in the early 1920s and is useful to compare to recent patterns of race and ethnicity (from US Census data) to assess urban social change.
