    Description

We built an inventory (database) of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) actions (creation, restoration, and management) in ponds and pondscapes (ponds at the landscape scale) in a diversity of social-ecological settings to assess the best practices. We formulated an online questionnaire that was shared with pond stakeholders. The questionnaire asked general (e.g., number of ponds, area of the pondscape, etc.) and specific (e.g., costs of the action, stakeholders involved, etc.) information on the NbS action implemented, and on 11 associated Nature's Contributions to People (NCPs). Among the NCPs we included, for instance, habitat creation for biodiversity, regulation of climate, learning or physical and physiological experiences. The database contains information gathered through the questionnaire, research papers and relevant web pages and platforms.

    Description

The combination formed by the intense transformation of the territory and climate change in the Spanish Mediterranean basins has configured an explosive cocktail from the point of view of the risk of flooding in these areas. Climate change is making new, intense-type cold-drop rains called DANA a more frequent phenomenon in Mediterranean basins. The vulnerability of the coastal territory in these areas because of the DANA phenomenon now requires the authorities to implement new strategies and policies that reduce the significant economic damage and loss of human life suffered in recent years. However, correlating these two phenomena with the increased risk of flooding is a difficult problem to diagnose, and even more difficult to solve. For this reason, a structured GIS methodology is proposed based on a geostatistical indicators analysis that correlates the transformation of the territory with the increase in vulnerability due to floods. This methodology is evaluated and put into practice in a case study of the basin area of a coastal lagoon in Spain. The impacts originating from the last three cold-drop phenomena developed in recent years are evaluated. The analysis carried out allows us to observe how the phenomenon of diffuse territorial anthropization in the territory has increased the damage caused by floods due to the loss of the natural hydrographic structure of the basin. Based on the results obtained in this analysis, risk mitigation actions will be proposed through the improvement of land management by using nature-based solutions.

    Description

The Open Data service is a further step in the commitment to open governance and transparency that the Municipality of Águeda undertakes. It is a further step in the cultural shift within the local public sector. The Municipality understands that opening up data is a value that will accelerate innovation and strengthen the community, considering the growing demand for free data and the technological evolution we are witnessing. The Open Data service aims to provide, free of charge, a large volume of data produced by the Municipality of Águeda to any citizen or organization that wishes to use it according to their interests. The Open Data are integrated into the Spatial Data Infrastructure of the municipality with access via Geoportal. They are organized by datasets under thematic groups. The data provided follows the provisions of the National Digital Interoperability Regulation, namely in the recommended or mandatory formats. We use a technological ecosystem supported by free and open-source technologies, ensuring interoperability between solutions. We seek to involve the community in this process, as well as schools, academia, research groups, technological communities, and companies, so that this territory, which the municipality promotes, can be analyzed more consistently and from various angles. It is from this perspective that we expect essential feedback from our peers, in the identification of new data that allows them to develop their projects and in the critical evaluation of the data we provide. On the other hand, we look forward to examples or even ideas for the development of applications that benefit the community, new ways of visualizing data, among other products that absorb the data made available. In the scrutiny of the data or in its mining, important information can be derived that allows us to reflect both on decision-making tasks, planning, or even immediate actions, in order to direct energy towards more responsible and simultaneously creative management. These are moments of synergy that are sought, oriented towards a constructive relationship that benefits the community as a whole. In the objectives we set for the provision of data, we want them to be comprehensive in the domain of geospatial information, respecting what is protected by the municipality. We foresee the possibility of integrating data from other organizations and citizens, local or regional, that enrich the data provided. We distribute the data in various formats and operate with a license that guarantees its free use and reuse so that more value is built. The distributed data guarantees privacy and protection of personal data. The technological solution adopted focused on the CKAN data management system. It is a web-based system that allows the storage and distribution of data, namely spreadsheets and content from the database. It is a solution maintained by the Open Knowledge Foundation. We have planned actions to disseminate open data and build based on open data, data that we also intend to inventory and disseminate in order to build levels of maturity that observe the state of the digital culture. We expect gains in digital literacy with the aforementioned actions. In economic terms, we expect growth in the digital sector, based on an increasingly better network infrastructure, with the emergence of new companies and the evolution of existing ones. Description

According to EU Strategy, the green infrastructure (GI) is “a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas with other environmental features designed and managed to deliver a wide range of ecosystem services (ES)”. Thus, GI is rooted in policies aimed at conserving biodiversity through the promotion of connectivity between populations. However, it is much more than a conservation instrument as it seeks to promote those ecosystem functions that are ultimately responsible for the services they provide us with. Roads and other linear infrastructures are one of the most prominent elements of the landscape and therefore will have a remarkable interaction with green infrastructure. Firstly, roads can disrupt flows and movements through landscape connecting elements between the core areas of the GI, preventing it from being ecologically coherent if appropriate structural measures against fragmentation are not taken. Secondly, roads induce changes in the supply of ES in the surrounding area at a local level and the spatial structures of the road network condition the land uses that ultimately define the supply of ES. In this research, I examine the relationship between the elements of GI, ES and road networks on the mainland of Spain. GI elements are those that will be included in the future Spanish Strategy (to be published in 2018): protected areas, critical areas for birds and mammals, river and coastal public domains, agricultural areas of high natural value, etc. ES were obtained from the Spanish National Ecosystem Assessment. GI elements have on average lower road densities. However, some essential landscape connectors show high road densities, especially river valleys and their riparian forest associated. The areas with a predominance of provision services show higher densities than those related to the supply of regulation and cultural services.

The following published OGC compliant WMTS services facilitate access to live geospatial data from the City of Toronto. All WMTS services are in Web Mercator projection. Orthorectified Aerial Imagery The following dataset provides access to the most current geometrically corrected (orthorectified) aerial photography for the City of Toronto. Previous year Orthoimagery is available through the links provided below. Historic Aerial Imagery These datasets are all sourced from scans of the original black and white aerial photography. These images have not gone through the same rigorous process that current aerial imagery goes through to create a seamless orthorectified image, corrected for the changes in elevation across the City. Due to this, the spatial accuracy of these datasets varies across the City. Be aware that there are known issues with some regions of data due to issues with the source data. These datasets intended use is to show land use changes over time and other similar tasks. It is not suitable for sub-metre level accuracy feature collection and is provided “as-is”. Aerial LiDAR - Hillshade A hillshade is a hypothetical illumination of a surface by determining illumination values for each cell in a raster. It is calculated by setting a position for a hypothetical light source and calculating the illumination values of each cell in relation to neighboring cells. It can be used to greatly enhance the visualization of a surface for analysis or graphical display, especially when using transparency. The City of Toronto publishes hillshades in both bare earth (no above-ground features included), and full-feature. Bare Earth Full Feature

    Description

As GIS and computing technologies advanced rapidly, many indoor space studies began to adopt GIS technology, data models, and analysis methods. However, even with a considerable amount of research on indoor GIS and various indoor systems developed for different applications, there has not been much attention devoted to adopting indoor GIS for the evaluation space usage. Applying indoor GIS for space usage assessment can not only provide a map-based interface for data collection, but also brings spatial analysis and reporting capabilities for this purpose. This study aims to explore best practice of using an indoor GIS platform to assess space usage and design a complete indoor GIS solution to facilitate and streamline the data collection, a management and reporting workflow. The design has a user-friendly interface for data collectors and an automated mechanism to aggregate and visualize the space usage statistics. A case study was carried out at the Purdue University Libraries to assess study space usage. The system is efficient and effective in collecting student counts and activities and generating reports to interested parties in a timely manner. The analysis results of the collected data provide insights into the user preferences in terms of space usage. This study demonstrates the advantages of applying an indoor GIS solution to evaluate space usage as well as providing a framework to design and implement such a system. The system can be easily extended and applied to other buildings for space usage assessment purposes with minimal development efforts.

    Description

These are a suite of datasets which make up the CSGN 2021 Habitat Connectivity Map. The map identifies areas of habitat (woodland, grassland, wetland and bog and heath) across central Scotland which should be protected and improved, as well as key sites for connecting these habitats so that species can move between them. These data are intended to support planners, developers, land managers and communities identify where there are areas of neutral grassland and the dispersal zones will help identify where there are opportunities to improve habitat connectivity. These opportunities are highlighted on the Grassland Opportunity Areas dataset. The data will also support the Scottish Government’s commitments to protect and restore biodiversity and to develop nature-based solutions to the climate emergency. The existing habitats shown on the Connectivity Map are limited to ‘natural’or ‘semi-natural’habitats. This means that they have not been significantly modified by humans; they have natural characteristics with a range of associated plant and animal species. Therefore, the existing habitats shown on the map do not include coniferous forest plantations or urban green spaces such as parkland. The map does not show acid or calcareous grassland habitats, nor does it show coastal, intertidal or marine habitats. Watercourses and open water are not included within the model, but can be identified from the base map or through other GIS layers used for analysis. Information on the current condition and future targets for rivers, lochs, coastal waters and groundwater can be found on the SEPA water environment hub. It is recommended that each habitat type is initially viewed alongside the other habitat layers, to ensure that the full range of habitats in an area are included in the decision-making process.

    Description

Small Farm Resource Centers (SFRCs) coordinate trials on a central site as well as on fields of individual farmers. Any new ideas, techniques, or crops are first evaluated at the SFRC, and then often tested via on-farm trials in the community. The purpose of the SFRC is to evaluate, within the community, ideas that have been proven elsewhere and that show promise. The best of these ideas are adapted to become the backbone of the SFRC’s agricultural outreach and community development efforts, and are developed into a variety of educational and training formats, outreach projects and poverty alleviation initiatives. Thus, SFRCs have two distinct functions. First, the experimental component tests and adapts new ideas that have potential to aid in the development of the community. These adaptive experiments make sure that what has worked elsewhere (local or distant) can reliably be expected to work in a particular community with similar environmental conditions (e.g., climatic, topographic, soil) as the SFRC. Secondly, the demonstration and training component uses the center and on-farm trials as teaching tools. The demonstrations and trainings can be a base from which promising results are shown to extension staff of the sponsoring organization, interested government officials, development groups, or farmers in the community.

    Description

The Danish Agency for Digitization collects and displays metadata about relevant Danish language resources as part of the joint public effort for Danish language technology. The political basis for sprogteknologi.dk can be found in the previous National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence from 2019, the Digitization Pact and the Economic Agreements for 2020 between the Government, KL and Danish Regions , in which the establishment of a joint Danish language resource was adopted. Since then, the effort to strengthen Danish language technology has also been included in more recent political agreements, most recently in the Government's strategic effort for artificial intelligence from 2024. The political anchoring of sprogteknologi.dk is in the 'Steering Group for Digital Innovation and Green Transition', which consists of a number of government authorities, the Danish Local Government and the Danish Regions. The Danish Agency for Digitalisation is the secretariat for sprogteknologi.dk. The Danish Agency for Digitalisation's ambition is that solutions involving artificial intelligence should function just as well in a Danish context as in the context of the major languages. In this context, the Agency considers Danish language data to be a strategic resource that is necessary to ensure that artificial intelligence can be used in Denmark right now and in the future. Therefore, the Agency focuses on the work with language resources and not on the actual development of new language technology solutions or language models. The majority of language technology developed today is based on major languages, such as English, Chinese, Spanish, German and French, which is why language technology often lacks understanding and knowledge of the Danish language and Danish culture. Language technology is based on data that represents linguistic characteristics, cultural norms and values and therefore has an impact on how the technology interprets input and how it responds. Lack of available Danish language resources makes it difficult or ineffective to use new technology in a Danish context.

    Description

Peatland ACTION is a national programme to restore peatlands across Scotland. It is led and funded by Scottish Government and delivered in partnership with NatureScot, Cairngorms National Park Authority, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority, Scottish Water, and Forestry & Land Scotland. In February 2020, the Scottish Government announced a substantial, multi-annual investment in peatland restoration of more than £250 million up to 2030. Restoring peatlands is one of the most effective ways of locking in carbon; offering a clear nature-based solution to both the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. Peatland restoration plays a key role in Scotland’s green recovery and is helping deliver a just transition to net-zero by supporting the rural economy through the creation and development of land-based jobs and skills across Scotland. This service provide information about the progress of restoration activities in Scotland.
