    National and official statistics

The Statistics and Registration Services Act (SRSA) 2007 defines Official Statistics as all statistical outputs from the Office for National Statistics, central government departments and agencies, by devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and other Crown Bodies. Under some circumstances, non-Crown bodies can be considered to produce Official Statistics output.

All statistics produced by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills are Official Statistics.

As a requirement of the SRSA2007, the http://www.statisticsauthority.gov.uk/assessment/code-of-practice">Code of Practice for Official Statistics was published in January 2009.

A National Statistic is an Official Statistic which has been formally assessed by the UK Statistics Authority as compliant with the Code of Practice.

The REPI compendium publication has been assessed and designated as a National Statistic, subject to certain requirements which we are currently addressing. The Assessment Report (number 169) can be found on the http://www.statisticsauthority.gov.uk/assessment/assessment/assessment-reports">UK Statistics Authority website.

This National Statistics status refers only to the compilation of REPI and not the statistics that are included. It is the responsibility of the producer body and the UK Statistics Authority to determine whether the statistics are designated as National Statistics, and those that are have been independently assessed by the UK Statistics Authority.

As a result, some tables included in REPI are National Statistics and others are not. To see which tables are designated as National Statistics, please see the following table:

    Description

The Participation Survey has run since October 2021 and is the key evidence source on engagement for DCMS. It is a continuous push-to-web household survey of adults aged 16 and over in England.

The Participation Survey provides reliable estimates of physical and digital engagement with the arts, heritage, museums and galleries, and libraries, as well as engagement with tourism, major events, digital and live sports.

In 2023/24, DCMS partnered with Arts Council England (ACE) to boost the Participation Survey to be able to produce meaningful estimates at Local Authority level. This has enabled us to have the most granular data we have ever had, which means there will be some new questions and changes to existing questions, response options and definitions in the 23/24 survey. The questionnaire for 2023/24 has been developed collaboratively to adapt to the needs and interests of both DCMS and ACE.

Where there has been a change, we have highlighted where a comparison with previous data can or cannot be made. Questionnaire changes can affect results, therefore should be taken into consideration when interpreting the findings.

Description

The Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 required the UK Statistics Authority to publish a Code of practice for statistics. Only those statistics assessed as compliant with the code will be designated as National Statistics.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has made arrangements to implement the code when publishing statistics. BIS has published a statement of compliance and other documents to demonstrate this.
