Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. In 2021/2022, nearly 176 million 60 kilogram bags of coffee were consumed worldwide, a slight increase from almost 167 million bags in the previous year.

Coffee Brewing Innovations The coffee industry is regularly coming up with innovative new methods for brewing coffee and serving it. Single cup brewers are a relatively new innovation which offer a quick and mess-free coffee brewing method for when one only wants a single cup of coffee without the hassle of brewing an entire pot. Keurig Green Mountain is the leading vendor of single-cup coffee in the United States.

Cold Brew Coffee Cold brew coffee is made by leaving coffee to brew in cold or room temperature water for 12 to 24 hours and results in a mellower, less acidic tasting coffee. It has become a popular menu item at coffee shops and cafes, but it also easy to make at home. The market for cold brew coffee was valued at 321 million U.S. dollars in 2017, and is expected to reach a staggering 1.37 billion U.S. dollars in market value by 2023.

Coffee production The coffee plant has its origins in Ethiopia and is now grown all over the world. Most of the world’s coffee is cultivated in South America, followed by Asia and Oceania. In 2021, over 77 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee were produced in South America. The majority of South America’s coffee production is attributed to Brazil. In the 2020/2021 fiscal year, global coffee production reached 175 million 60-kilogram bags.

Coffee brewing in the United States Americans love their coffee and have dozens of different methods and gadgets for brewing and preparing coffee. A 2020 survey of U.S. consumers found that the most commonly used coffee preparation methods were drip coffee makers and single cup brewers. However, drip coffee makers have become less popular over time. In 2010, 77 percent of coffee drinkers used drip coffee makers, while in 2020 this share had dropped to 41 percent.

    Description

Indonesia’s domestic coffee consumption has almost quadrupled since 1990, reaching the equivalent of 4.8 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee in 2019/2020. This growing demand is fueled by a younger generation switching over from tea to coffee, and a newfound appreciation for locally-produced coffee.

    Global tastes
As one of the world’s leading producers of coffee, Indonesia had previously exported most of the coffee beans that it produces. The local coffee consumption was largely dominated by instant coffee and “kopi tubruk” – a thick and sweet drink made using coffee grounds. In recent years, however, a growing middle class and a more cosmopolitan, youthful population have changed consumer preferences. This is reflected in the spread of U.S.-based coffee shop giant Starbucks in Indonesia, which had 365 licensed stores in Indonesia in 2019.

    Going local
Local coffee products are also gaining in popularity, and this can be seen in the instant coffee market. In 2016, local brand Pt. Javaprima Abadi, known for producing “kopi luwak”, held more than a third of the instant coffee market share. Indonesian consumers are also entering the “third wave of coffee consumption”, as seen in the rise of specialty roasters and artisanal coffee shops that emphasize local, single-sourced beans, especially in Jakarta and Bali. The rise of the artisanal coffee market, with its emphasis on buying local and forging stronger relationships between producers and roasters, has already been cited by some industry experts as having an impact on Indonesia’s coffee exports.

Colombian Mild Arabicas remained the most expensive coffee per pound in 2019, though the trend has seen the price plummet from a 2011 high of 2.84 dollars to 1.34 dollars in 2019. Arabicas of all varieties commanded higher dollar values than their Robusta cousins.

    Arabica and Robusta differences

Arabica and Robusta are the two most popular coffee varieties in the world. There are several important differences between the coffees. Robusta is originally from sub-Saharan Africa and is now primarily grown in Africa and Indonesia. Arabica, on the other hand, originated in the Ethiopian highlands and is now typically grown in South America and Africa. Another notable difference between the varieties is their amount of caffeine. Robusta contains nearly double the amount of caffeine of Arabica. Robusta also tolerates a wider range of climate conditions and produces a greater yield per hectare than Arabica. These are two factors which contribute to Arabica’s higher price.

    Production and consumption

Due to its demand, over 101 million 60-kilogram bags of Arabica were produced worldwide in 2020. The less popular Robusta had a total production of 74.29 million 60-kilogram bags in the same year. Both varieties support the continually growing rate of coffee consumption. In 2020, 166.63 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee were consumed worldwide.

    Description

Domestic coffee consumption in Australia reached around 2.1 million sixty-kilogram bags in the 2024 financial year. Between 2017 and 2019, domestic coffee consumption in the country had steadily increased followed by a slight decrease in 2020, where the national consumption rate reached 1.96 million sixty-kilogram bags before recovering in 2021. Individually, Australians had an average coffee consumption of 3.84 kilograms each during 2023. Australia’s deep-rooted love for coffee Coffee is a staple on café menus across Australia, with a strong coffee culture deeply ingrained in the daily lives of the population. From the flat white, whose origin is disputed between Australia and New Zealand, to cappuccinos and lattes, a wide variety of coffee beverages are consumed in the country. Cappuccinos emerged as the favorite among Australian consumers in a 2023 conducted survey. The coffee market in Australia has experienced substantial growth recently, with revenue reaching around 11 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, and forecasted to increase by a further approximately four billion U.S. dollars by 2028. The market’s revenue is primarily driven by roast coffee, with the instant coffee segment comparably smaller. Budding café scene: from international to domestic chains Australia’s extensive coffee shop landscape is reflective of the nation’s affinity for the hot beverage, with over 54 thousand café and restaurant establishments in operation across the country in the 2023 financial year. The majority of these establishments are concentrated in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, with Melbourne dubbed the coffee capital of Australia due to its eclectic café and roastery scene. The prevalence of domestic coffee franchises such as The Coffee Club, which boasts over 100 locations in Queensland alone, alongside international chains, including McCafé, which holds the highest number of locations among popular coffee franchises in Australia, further evidences the country’s flourishing coffee industry. Nevertheless, consumption trends indicate that Australians are not only avid coffee consumers at cafés, but are also increasingly investing in coffee machines for homemade brews due to rising menu prices.

While the consumption of coffee showed an upward trend over the last years, the production value of the commodity in the Philippines dipped and was approximately 3.28 billion Philippine pesos in 2018. In the same year, the per capita production index was only 61.36 percent compared to the base record of 100 percent in 2012.

Where does the Philippines stand in the coffee export across the Asia Pacific Region?

Across the Asia-Pacific Region,the country placed 6th in 2019 for the export of green coffee. The productivity level compared to other countries in Asia Pacific was relatively small.

Even though the exports and production of coffee are low in the Philippines, the market is still vibrant due to the demand for instant coffee. Description

In 2015, the Chinese population consumed almost 626,300 metric tons of tea, around nine times more than coffee. Nonetheless, both coffee and tea per capita consumption in mainland China remains relatively low, even when compared to neighboring regions such as Japan and Hong Kong.

    Why tea?

Tea is said to have originated in Southwest China as a medicinal drink and has for centuries played an important social and cultural role in the region. It is proudly presented as China’s national drink. Inevitably, China is the world’s largest tea producer and exporter. In 2017 alone, 2.5 million tons of tea were grown domestically across the country, more than in India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia (other major Asian tea producers) combined. Growing disposable incomes as well as an enhanced awareness of the health benefits of tea are likely to continue increasing Chinese tea retail sales and consumption.

    Where does that leave coffee?

The coffee drinking trend is relatively new in China. The per capita amount of coffee consumed is on average a hundred times lower than that in the Western countries such as the United States and the UK. However, China’s domestic coffee demand is forecasted to triple between 2020 and 2025. The fast-expanding Chinese coffee consumer base, especially among females, makes China one of the most promising coffee markets in the world.
