    Description

We created a dataset of stories generated by OpenAI’s gpt-4o-miniby using a Python script to construct prompts that were sent to the OpenAI API. We used Statistics Norway’s list of 252 countries, added demonyms for each country, for example Norwegian for Norway, and removed countries without demonyms, leaving us with 236 countries. Our base prompt was “Write a 1500 word potential {demonym} story”, and we generated 50 stories for each country. The scripts used to generate the data, and additional scripts for analysis are available at the GitHub repository https://github.com/MachineVisionUiB/GPT_stories

    Description

Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a substantial threat to global health and economies, which has led many countries and regions to develop AMR National Action Plans (NAPs). However, inadequate logistical capacity, funding, and essential information can hinder NAP policymaking, especially in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs). Therefore, major gaps exist between aspirations and actions, such as fully operationalized environmental AMR surveillance programs in NAPs. To help bridge knowledge gaps, we compiled a multilingual database that contains policy guidance from 146 countries composed of NAPs, internal reports, and other guidance documents on AMR mitigations, including environmental considerations. Leveraging this database, we developed an AMR-Policy GPT, a large language model with advanced retrieval-augmented generation capabilities. This prototype model can search and summarize evidence from plans, metadata, and technical knowledge and provide traceable references from global document databases. It was then manually validated to show its proficiency in accurately managing diverse inquiries while minimizing misinformation. Overall, the AMR-Policy GPT offers a prototype that, with the deepening of its database and further road testing, has the potential to support inclusive, evidence-informed AMR policy guidance to support governments, research, and public agencies. A conversational version of our prototype is available at www.liuhuibot.com/amrpolicy.

    Description

19 of the 20 countries with the lowest estimated GDP per capita in the world in 2024 are located in Sub-Saharan Africa. South Sudan is believed to have a GDP per capita of just 351.02 U.S. dollars - for reference, Luxembourg has the highest GDP per capita in the world, at almost 130,000 U.S. dollars, which is around 400 times larger than that of Burundi (U.S. GDP per capita is over 250 times higher than Burundi's). Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa Many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa have been among the most impoverished in the world for over a century, due to lacking nutritional and sanitation infrastructures, persistent conflict, and political instability. These issues are also being exacerbated by climate change, where African nations are some of the most vulnerable in the world, as well as the population boom that will place over the 21st century. Of course, the entire population of Sub-Saharan Africa does not live in poverty, and countries in the southern part of the continent, as well as oil-producing states around the Gulf of Guinea, do have some pockets of significant wealth (especially in urban areas). However, while GDP per capita may be higher in these countries, wealth distribution is often very skewed, and GDP per capita figures are not representative of average living standards across the population. Outside of Africa Yemen is the only country outside of Africa to feature on the list, due to decades of civil war and instability. Yemen lags very far behind some of its neighboring Arab states, some of whom rank among the richest in the world due to their much larger energy sectors. Additionally, the IMF does not make estimates for Afghanistan, which would also likely feature on this list.

    Description

As a share of gross domestic product (GDP), Ukraine spent more on its military than any other country in 2023, reaching 37 percent of the country's GDP. The high figure is due to the country being invaded by Russia in February 2022. Algeria and Saudi Arabia followed behind.Leading military spending countriesIn gross terms, the countries with the highest military spending are the United States, China, and Russia. However, these are countries with large populations and GDPs, and smaller countries usually cannot compete alone, regardless of how much they invest. For this reason, they form alliances such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO countries aim to pool two percent of their GDP towards their own militaries and to aid each other in case of war. Regional differencesThe past decade has seen an increase in global military spending. This has not been distributed evenly. That period saw large positive changes in military spending from several Asian countries, including a large increase from China. While this does not reflect the number of active conflicts, it reflects growing tensions in global affairs.
