This paper investigates the role of commodity price information when evaluating inflation risk. Using a model averaging approach, we provide strong evidence of in-sample and out-of-sample predictive ability from commodity prices and convenience yields to inflation, establishing clear point and density forecast performance gains when incorporating disaggregated commodities price information. The resulting forecast densities are used to calculate the (ex-ante) risk of inflation breaching defined thresholds that broadly characterize periods of high and low inflation. We find that information in commodity prices significantly enhances our ability to pick out tail inflation events and to characterize the level of risks associated with periods of high volatility in commodity prices.

As of December 2023, rice experienced the highest inflation rate among the other commodity groups in Indonesia, contributing to the overall inflation rate of 2.61 percent in the country for that year. Globally, the inflation rate has been on the rise since late 2021.

The inflation rates of energy commodity prices in Italy began to increase significantly in 2021 and continued throughout 2022. Electricity has seen the steepest rise, with the inflation rate reaching 199 percent in October 2022. These increases in inflation were driven by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has caused uncertainty over Europe's security of gas supply, as well as intense energy price volatility. However, since the beginning of 2023, energy commodity prices have shown a decrease in the country.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, inflation rates have been increasing around the world through the last months of 2021 and throughout 2022. In Denmark, especially the prices of housing, electricity and gas etc. as well as food and non-alcoholic beverages have risen sharply, but in January 2024, education was the commodity group with the highest inflation rate. In total, the inflation rate in Denmark that month stood at 1.2 percent.
