A common challenge that oviparous animals face is securing survivorship during the vulnerable embryonic stage. One of the parental investment strategies to improve survivorship is providing physical structures to protect the embryos. In amphibians, there is a notable diversity in jelly-layer structures surrounding eggs. Previous studies show that these jelly layers provide eggs with protection against egg predators, egg pathogens, and desiccation. However, few studies examined the cost–benefit relationship of the jelly-layer structures. By using the predator–prey interaction between wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) tadpoles and spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) eggs as a model system, we tested three hypotheses: (1) having the outer jelly layers would be costly to the embryos, (2) the relative benefit of the structural egg defense would become apparent and increase as the intensity of egg predation increases, and (3) a certain degree of predation would increase the hatching success of salamander embryos by mechanically thinning the thick outer jelly layers and increasing oxygen diffusion throughout an egg mass. To test these hypotheses, we conducted a factorial experiment in which we crossed four egg-predation levels with two jelly-layer conditions, intact or removed. We found that the jelly layers were essential in protecting spotted salamander embryos from wood frog tadpoles but that the associated cost was apparent in no-predation treatments. The differential survivorship between intact eggs and eggs without jelly layers showed that the fitness advantage of jelly layers increased as the level of predation increased. Finally, the hatching success of intact egg masses was highest under the high predation conditions. These results imply that the evolution of the jelly-layer thickness occurred under constant egg-predation pressure. Given this predator–prey coevolution, egg predators may play a critical role in improving the hatching success of salamander embryos under certain conditions.

Reproduction entails costs, and disentangling the relative importance of each stage of the reproductive cycle may be important to assess the costs and benefits of different reproductive strategies. We studied the early costs of reproduction in oviparous and viviparous lizard females of the bimodal reproductive species Zootoca vivipara. Egg-retention time in oviparous females is approximately one third of the time in viviparous females. We compared the vitellogenesis and egg-retention stages which are common to both reproductive modes. Precisely, we monitored the thermoregulatory behaviour, the weight gain and the immunocompetence of the females. Moreover, we injected an antigen in half of the females (immune challenge) to study the trade-offs between reproductive mode and immune performance, and between different components of the immune system. Finally, we experimentally induced parturition in viviparous females at the time of egg-laying in oviparous females. Oviparous and viviparous females did not show strong differences in response to the immune challenge. However, viviparous females spent more time thermoregulating while partially hidden and gained more weight than oviparous females. The greater weight gain indicates that the initial period of egg-retention is less costly for viviparous than for oviparous females or that viviparous females are able to save and accumulate energy at this period. This energy may be used by viviparous females to cope with the subsequent costs of the last two thirds of the gestation. Such an ability to compensate the higher costs of a longer egg-retention period may account for the frequent evolution of viviparity in squamate reptiles.

Red-breasted Mergansers nests were located during 2022 and 2023 on the Tern Islands, Kouchibouguac National Park, New Brunswick, Canada. After being located, nests were visited twice each week until their fate was determined (Hatched or Abandoned). At the first visit to the nest, the eggs were assigned a number which was written on the egg and 2-3 cc of albumen was removed from each egg and run through a IEF gel pH 3-19 pre-cast gels, females were identified through distinct albumin protein band patterns. During each visit through incubation, we photographed clutches to record individual egg positions, and tracked the location of each egg.

Adaptive thermal tolerance plasticity can dampen the negative effects of warming. However, our knowledge of tolerance plasticity is lacking for embryonic stages that are relatively immobile and may benefit the most from an adaptive plastic response. We tested for heat hardening capacity (a rapid increase in thermal tolerance that manifests in minutes to hours) in embryos of the lizard Anolis sagrei. We compared survival of a lethal temperature exposure between embryos that either did (‘hardened’) or did not (‘not hardened’) receive a high but non-lethal temperature pre-treatment. We also measured heart rates at common garden temperatures before and after heat exposures to assess metabolic consequences. ‘Hardened’ embryos had significantly greater survival after lethal heat exposure relative to ‘not hardened’ embryos. That said, heat pre-treatment led to a subsequent increase in embryo heart rate that did not occur in embryos that did not receive pre-treatment, indicative of an energetic cost of mounting the heat hardening response. Our results are consistent with adaptive thermal tolerance plasticity in these embryos (greater heat survival after heat exposure), but also highlight associated costs. Thermal tolerance plasticity may be an important mechanism by which embryos respond to warming that warrants greater consideration. Methods Approximately 300 female A. sagrei were collected from Miami-Dade County, FL during May of 2022 and transported to Loyola University Chicago, where they were housed following established protocols. Briefly, females were housed in groups of up to 6 individuals per cage with perches and moist potting soil available for egg laying [16, 37]. Crickets are provided daily as food and enclosures are misted with water five or six times per day with an automatic misting system (MistKing, Jungle Hobbies Ltd.). Eggs were collected daily between 900 and 1000 h and were incubated at 27°C, within the natural range of A. sagrei nests [16, 38], in a sealed petri dish filled with moist vermiculite (-150 kPa)[16]. Given that multiple females were housed together, we could not determine the source of each egg. However, we assume that each egg was from a different female due to our sampling design: A. sagrei lay one egg at a time at an interval of 7-10 d, and all eggs used in the study (N = 89) were collected over four consecutive days period (June 13-16, 2022). Each egg was randomly assigned to one of three groups: Hardened, Not Hardened, or Control (see below). Starting on day seven, the heart rate of each embryo was measured between 9:00 and 13:00 h every other day using an infrared egg monitor (Avitronics, Cornwall, UK)[10]. Heart rates were recorded for 30 seconds, and if a heart rate could not be found the egg was gently rotated up to four times and reassessed [18]. Experimental Protocol Heat tolerance and heat hardening ability were measured on day 12 (Figure 1). Not all embryos survived to day 12, and we moved forward with the following sample sizes: N = 25 Hardened, N = 29 Not hardened, and N = 28 Control. Heat tolerance was measured as survival after 1h at 45°C, a temperature known to be potentially lethal to developing embryos of this species from previous studies [18, 39]. Eggs in the Hardened group experienced a heat pretreatment at 39°C for 1 h before exposure to 45°C 2h later (Figure 1). The Not Hardened group experienced only the 45°C exposure, while the Control group did not experience any elevated temperatures. The heart rate of all eggs was measured three times on experimental days, corresponding to times before and after heat exposures in the groups that received them (figure 1). There was approximately 1.25 h between the first and second heart rate measurements, and 2 h between the second and third heart rate measurements. At the conclusion of data collection, eggs were placed back in their chambers at 27°C and raised until hatching or egg failure as determined by fungal growth. Statistical Analysis We tested for differences in mortality between control and treatment groups with a G-test. We tested for differences in heart rate change before and after heat exposure (i.e., Heart rate 2 – Heart rate1 and Heart rate 3 – Heart rate 2; Figure 1) using paired t-tests. Egg freezing is a relatively new and controversial procedure in the Arab region, challenging traditional perceptions of fertility and motherhood. This study aims to assess Lebanese women’s awareness and acceptance of egg freezing and how these attitudes differ according to vary with age, socio-demographic characteristics, and educational level. We conducted a cross-sectional survey targeting Lebanese females aged between 18 and 39, involving 402 Lebanese women from six different institutions representing diverse cultural backgrounds. 65% of the respondents had heard of egg freezing. Younger women (18–30 years old) were 2.09 times more likely to consider egg freezing than those aged 31–39. Single women were 4.31 times more likely to consider egg freezing than women in relationships, while childless women were 5.00 times more likely compared to women who already had children. Overall, medical egg freezing was more widely accepted than social egg freezing. The most supported indication for social egg freezing was to enable women who struggled to find the right partner during their peak fertile years to have children in the future (41.5%). The most common concern that affected women’s decision to undergo egg freezing was whether the procedure would be proven safe for their future children and whether it would affect their future fertility. Interestingly, in a relatively conservative country, concerns about hymenal disruption were the least prevalent, (19%). The most common concern by far was limited information on the procedure (62%). In conclusion, the study reveals that awareness and acceptance of social egg freezing among Lebanese women were higher than expected. Limited information on the procedure’s details was the main impediment to higher acceptance rates, highlighting the importance of physicians and primary healthcare providers in providing reproductive-aged women with the necessary information to safeguard their reproductive potential.

As agricultural practices intensify, species once common in agricultural landscapes are declining in abundance. One such species is the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus L.), whose eastern North American population has decreased approximately 80% during the past 20 years. One hypothesis explaining the monarch's decline is reduced breeding habitat via loss of common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca L.) from agricultural landscapes in the north central United States due to adoption of herbicide tolerant row crops. Current efforts to enhance monarch breeding habitat primarily involve restoring milkweed in perennial grasslands. However, prior surveys found fewer monarch eggs on common milkweed in grassland versus crop habitats, indicating potential preference for oviposition in row crop habitats, or alternately, greater egg loss to predation in grasslands. We tested these alternative mechanisms by measuring oviposition and egg predation on potted A. syriaca host plants. Our study revealed that habitat context influences both monarch oviposition preference and egg predation rates, and that these patterns vary by year. We found higher monarch egg predation rates during the first 24 h after exposure and that much of the predation occurs at night. Overall we documented up to 90% egg mortality over 72 h in perennial grasslands, while predation rates in corn were lower (10–30% mortality) and more consistent between years. These findings demonstrate that weekly monarch egg surveys are too infrequent to distinguish oviposition habitat preferences from losses due to egg predation and suggest that monarch restoration efforts need to provide both attractive and safe habitats for monarch reproduction.

Development is on the rise despite the fact that coastal infrastructure is subjected to flooding and erosion. To meet these national needs, the Coastal and Marine Geology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is compiling existing reliable historical shoreline data along open-ocean sandy shores of the conterminous United States and parts of Alaska and Hawaii under the National Assessment of Shoreline Change project. There is no widely accepted standard for analyzing shoreline change. Existing shoreline data measurements and rate calculation methods vary from study to study and prevent combining results into state-wide or regional assessments. The impetus behind the National Assessment project was to develop a standardized method of measuring changes in shoreline position that is consistent from coast to coast. The goal was to facilitate the process of periodically and systematically updating the results in an internally consistent manner.

Wolbachia is a widespread endosymbiotic bacteria with diverse phenotypic effects on its insect hosts, ranging from parasitic to mutualistic. Wolbachia also commonly infects social insects, where it faces unique challenges associated with its hosts’ caste-based reproductive division of labor and colony living. Here we dissect the benefits and costs of Wolbachia infection on life-history traits of the invasive pharaoh ant, Monomorium pharaonis. Pharaoh ants are relatively short-lived and show natural variation in Wolbachia infection between colonies, thereby making them an ideal model system for this study. We quantified effects on the lifespan of queen and worker castes, the egg-laying rate of queens across queen lifespan, and the metabolic rates of whole colonies and colony members.
