In Colombia, visits to retail and recreation community spaces like restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, and others, dropped by nearly 60 percent between December 2020 and January 2021, when compared to the beginning of 2020. This type of public areas recorded the strongest declines among the analyzed community areas in the South American country. Overall, Colombia showed a more severe decline in visits to public spaces than, for instance, Argentina.

This archived public use dataset has 11 data elements reflecting United States COVID-19 community levels for all available counties.
The COVID-19 community levels were developed using a combination of three metrics — new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days, the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, and total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days. The COVID-19 community level was determined by the higher of the new admissions and inpatient beds metrics, based on the current level of new cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days. New COVID-19 admissions and the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied represent the current potential for strain on the health system. Data on new cases acts as an early warning indicator of potential increases in health system strain in the event of a COVID-19 surge.
Using these data, the COVID-19 community level was classified as low, medium, or high.
COVID-19 Community Levels were used to help communities and individuals make decisions based on their local context and their unique needs. Community vaccination coverage and other local information, like early alerts from surveillance, such as through wastewater or the number of emergency department visits for COVID-19, when available, can also inform decision making for health officials and individuals.
For the most accurate and up-to-date data for any county or state, visit the relevant health department website. COVID Data Tracker may display data that differ from state and local websites. This can be due to differences in how data were collected, how metrics were calculated, or the timing of web updates.

Visits to Mexico's parks, beaches, public gardens and similar places went down by 46 percent between December 2020 and January 2021, when compared to the weeks prior to the COVID-19 breakout in 2020. Retail and recreation community areas in the North American country also registered visit drops of more than 40 percent. Residential places, on the other hand, saw increases in people traffic — the only growth recorded at the beginning of 2021 in Mexico. Community areas in Brazil saw a less severe drop in visits compared to Mexico.
As global communities responded to COVID-19, we heard from public health officials that the same type of aggregated, anonymized insights we use in products such as Google Maps would be helpful as they made critical decisions to combat COVID-19. These Community Mobility Reports aimed to provide insights into what changed in response to policies aimed at combating COVID-19. The New York Times is releasing a series of data files with cumulative counts of coronavirus cases in the United States, at the state and county level, over time. We are compiling this time series data from state and local governments and health departments in an attempt to provide a complete record of the ongoing outbreak.
Since the first reported coronavirus case in Washington State on Jan. 21, 2020, The Times has tracked cases of coronavirus in real time as they were identified after testing. Because of the widespread shortage of testing, however, the data is necessarily limited in the picture it presents of the outbreak.
We have used this data to power our maps and reporting tracking the outbreak, and it is now being made available to the public in response to requests from researchers, scientists and government officials who would like access to the data to better understand the outbreak.
The data begins with the first reported coronavirus case in Washington State on Jan. 21, 2020. We will publish regular updates to the data in this repository.

Methods for calculating county level of community transmission indicator The County Level of Community Transmission indicator uses two metrics: (1) total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 persons in the last 7 days and (2) percentage of positive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) in the last 7 days. For each of these metrics, CDC classifies transmission values as low, moderate, substantial, or high (below and here). If the values for each of these two metrics differ (e.g., one indicates moderate and the other low), then the higher of the two should be used for decision-making.
CDC core metrics of and thresholds for community transmission levels of SARS-CoV-2 Total New Case Rate Metric: "New cases per 100,000 persons in the past 7 days" is calculated by adding the number of new cases in the county (or other administrative level) in the last 7 days divided by the population in the county (or other administrative level) and multiplying by 100,000. "New cases per 100,000 persons in the past 7 days" is considered to have a transmission level of Low (0-9.99); Moderate (10.00-49.99); Substantial (50.00-99.99); and High (greater than or equal to 100.00).
Test Percent Positivity Metric: "Percentage of positive NAAT in the past 7 days" is calculated by dividing the number of positive tests in the county (or other administrative level) during the last 7 days by the total number of tests conducted
Between December 13, 2020 and January 24, 2021, the number of visits to parks, beaches and other public spaces such as gardens and marinas in Argentina dropped 46 percent in comparison to the beginning of 2020. Retail and recreation areas, namely restaurants, shopping centers, museums and libraries also saw a decrease of 47 percent in the number of visits. The only community space that registered an increase in the public's mobility was residential areas, with a growth of four percent. Neighboring Brazil, however, experienced a lesser decrease in visits to public areas since the COVID-19 outbreak.

This case surveillance public use dataset has 19 elements for all COVID-19 cases shared with CDC and includes demographics, geography (county and state of residence), any exposure history, disease severity indicators and outcomes, and presence of any underlying medical conditions and risk behaviors. The Chicago CCVI identifies communities that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and are vulnerable to barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Vulnerability is defined as a combination of sociodemographic factors, epidemiological factors, occupational factors, and cumulative COVID-19 burden. The 10 components of the index include COVID-19 specific risk factors and outcomes and social factors known to be associated with social vulnerability in the context of emergency preparedness. The CCVI is derived from ranking values of the components by Chicago Community Area, then synthesizing them into a single composite weighted score. The higher the score, the more vulnerable the geographic area. ZIP Code CCVI is included to enable comparison with other COVID-19 data available on the Chicago Data Portal. Some elements of the CCVI are not available by ZIP Code. To create ZIP Code CCVI, the proportion of the ZIP Code population contributed by each Community Areas was determined. The apportioned populations were then weighted by the Community Area CCVI score and averaged to determine a ZIP Code CCVI score. Due to the change in the survey instrument regarding intention to vaccinate, our estimates for “hesitant or unsure” or “hesitant” derived from April 14-26, 2021, are not directly comparable with prior Household Pulse Survey data and should not be used to examine trends in hesitancy. To support state and local communication and outreach efforts, ASPE developed state, county, and sub-state level predictions of hesitancy rates(https://aspe.hhs.gov/pdf-report/vaccine-hesitancy) using the most recently available federal survey data. We estimate hesitancy rates at the state level using the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey (HPS)(https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/household-pulse-survey.html) data and utilize the estimated values to predict hesitancy rates in more granular areas using the Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS)(https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/microdata.html). Wastewater collection areas are comprised of merged sewage drainage basins that flow to a shared testing location for the COVID-19 wastewater study. The collection area polygons are published with related wastewater testing data, which are provided by scientists from Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute.Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes COVID-19. People infected with SARS-CoV-2 excrete the virus in their feces in a process known as “shedding”. The municipal wastewater treatment system (sewage system) collects and aggregates these bathroom contributions across communities. Tempe wastewater samples are collected downstream of a community and the samples are brought to the ASU lab to analyze for the virus. Analysis is based on the genetic material inside the virus. About the data:These data illustrate a trend of the signal of the weekly average of COVID-19 genome copies per liter of wastewater in Tempe's sewage. The dashboard and collection area map do not depict the number of individuals infected. Each collection area includes at least one sampling location, which collects wastewater from across the collection area. This public use dataset has 11 data elements reflecting COVID-19 community levels for all available counties. This dataset contains the same values used to display information available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/community-levels-county-map.html. CDC looks at the combination of three metrics — new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days, the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, and total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days — to determine the COVID-19 community level. The COVID-19 community level is determined by the higher of the new admissions and inpatient beds metrics, based on the current level of new cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days. New COVID-19 admissions and the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied represent the current potential for strain on the health system. Data on new cases acts as an early warning indicator of potential increases in health system strain in the event of a COVID-19 surge. Using these data, the COVID-19 community level is classified as low, medium , or high. Authorizations to collect certain public health data expired at the end of the U.S. public health emergency declaration on May 11, 2023. The following jurisdictions discontinued COVID-19 case notifications to CDC: Iowa (11/8/21), Kansas (5/12/23), Kentucky (1/1/24), Louisiana (10/31/23), New Hampshire (5/23/23), and Oklahoma (5/2/23). Please note that these jurisdictions will not routinely send new case data after the dates indicated. As of 7/13/23, case notifications from Oregon will only include pediatric cases resulting in death.

Announcement Beginning October 20, 2022, CDC will report and publish aggregate case and death data from jurisdictional and state partners on a weekly basis rather than daily. As a result, community transmission levels data reported on data.cdc.gov will be updated weekly on Thursdays, typically by 8 PM ET, instead of daily. This public use dataset has 7 data elements reflecting community transmission levels for all available counties. This dataset contains reported daily transmission level at the county level and contains the same values used to display transmission maps on the COVID Data Tracker. Each day, the dataset is appended to contain the most recent day's data. Transmission level is set to low, moderate, substantial, or high using the calculation rules below. Currently, CDC provides the public with two versions of COVID-19 county-level community transmission level data: this dataset with the levels as originally posted (Originally Posted dataset), updated daily with the most recent day’s data, and an historical dataset with the county-level transmission data from January 1, 2021 (Historical Changes dataset). Methods for calculating county level of community transmission indicator The County Level of Community Transmission indicator uses two metrics: (1) total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 persons in the last 7 days and (2) percentage of positive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) in the last 7 days. For each of these metrics, CDC classifies transmission values as low, moderate, substantial, or high (below and here). If the values for each of these two metrics differ (e.g., one indicates moderate and the other low), then the higher of the two should be used for decision-making. CDC core metrics of and thresholds for community transmission levels of SARS-CoV-2 Total New Case Rate Metric: "New cases per 100,000 persons in the past 7 days" is calculated by adding the number of new cases in the county (or other administrative level) in the last 7 days divided by the population in the county (or other administrative level) and multiplying by 100,000. Test Percent Positivity Metric: "Percentage of positive NAAT in the past 7 days" is calculated by dividing the number of positive tests in the county (or other administrative level) during the last 7 days by the total number of tests conducted over the last 7 days. "Percentage of positive NAAT in the past 7 days" is considered to have a transmission level of Low (less than 5.00); Moderate (5.00-7.99); Substantial (8.00-9.99); and High (greater than or equal to 10.00). A. SUMMARY Medical provider confirmed COVID-19 cases and confirmed COVID-19 related deaths in San Francisco, CA aggregated by Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas and normalized by 2018 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates for population data to calculate rate per 10,000 residents.
Cases and deaths are both mapped to the residence of the individual, not to where they were infected or died. For example, if one was infected in San Francisco at work but lives in the East Bay, those are not counted as SF Cases or if one dies in Zuckerberg San Francisco General but is from another county, that is also not counted in this dataset.
Dataset is cumulative and covers cases going back to March 2nd, 2020 when testing began. It is updated daily.
B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED Addresses from medical data are geocoded by the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH). Those addresses are spatially joined to the geographic areas. Counts are generated based on the number of address points that match each geographic area. The 2018 ACS estimates for population provided by the Census are used to create a rate which is equal to ([count] / [acs_population]) * 10000) representing the number of cases per 10,000 residents.
C. UPDATE PROCESS Geographic analysis is scripted by SFDPH staff and synced to this dataset each day.
D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET Privacy rules in effect To protect privacy, certain rules are in effect: 1. Case counts greater than 0 and less than 10 are dropped - these will be null (blank) values 2. Cases dropped altogether for areas where acs_population < 1000
Rate suppression in effect where counts lower than 20 Rates are not calculated unless the case count is greater than or equal to 20. Rates are generally unstable at small numbers, so we avoid calculating them directly. We advise you to apply the same approach as this is best practice in epidemiology.
A note on Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are special boundaries created by the U.S. Census based on ZIP Codes developed by the USPS. They are not, however, the same thing. ZCTAs are polygonal representations of USPS ZIP Code service area routes. Read how the Census develops ZCTAs on their website.

As of January 24, 2021, retail and recreation public places in Brazil such as restaurants, cafés, shopping centers, among others, registered a decline of over 30 percent in visits when compared to January and February, 2020. This represents the highest drop recorded in the country's public spaces that were analyzed. On the other hand, grocery and pharmacy establishments didn't experience any changes in the number of visits, while residential places were the only category showing a positive growth rate. In Chile, the COVID-19 outbreak brought about a deeper decrease in urban mobility.
In Colombia, visits to retail and recreation community spaces like restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, and others, dropped by nearly 60 percent between December 2020 and January 2021, when compared to the beginning of 2020. This type of public areas recorded the strongest declines among the analyzed community areas in the South American country. Overall, Colombia showed a more severe decline in visits to public spaces than, for instance, Argentina.
