    Description

These performance tables provide information on the attainment of students of sixth-form age in local secondary schools and further education sector colleges in the academic year 2012 to 2013. They also show how these results compare with other schools and colleges in the local authority area and in England as a whole.

The tables report the results of 16- to 18-year-old students at the end of advanced level study in the 2012 to 2013 academic year. All schools and colleges in a local authority area are listed in alphabetical order, including:

    • maintained secondary schools
    • academies
    • free schools
    • independent schools
    • further education colleges with students aged 16 to 18

Special schools that have chosen to be included are also listed, as are any sixth-form centres or consortia that operate in an area.

This year, the performance indicators are separated into three separate cohorts:

    • A level
    • academic
    • vocational

To be included in a cohort, a student needs to have taken at least one substantial qualification in one or more of the qualification types. Students following programmes of mixed qualification types may belong to more than one cohort, therefore full-time equivalent (FTE) figures are provided alongside student numbers. FTE figures take account of the proportion of time a student spends in each cohort based on the size of the qualification.

    Educational Youth Indicators

School Enrollment, Attendance, Achievement, and Engagement

    By City of Baltimore [source]

    About this dataset

This dataset from the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance-Jacob France Institute (BNIA-JFI) gathers information about education and youth across Baltimore. Through tracking 27 indicators grouped into seven categories - student enrollment and demographics, dropout rate and high school completion, student attendance, suspensions and expulsions, elementary and middle school student achievement, high school performance, youth labor force participation, and youth civic engagement - BNIA-JFI paints a comprehensive picture of education trends within the city limits. Data sourced from the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS), American Community Survey (ACS), as well as Maryland Department of Education allows for cross program comparison to better map connections between educational outcomes affected by neighborhood context. The 2009-2010 school year was used based on readily available data with an approximated 3.4% of address unable to be matched or geocoded and therefore not included in these calculations. Leveraging this data provides perspective to help guide decisions made at local government level that could impact thousands of lives in years ahead

    How to use the dataset

This dataset contains valuable information about the educational performance and youth engagement in Baltimore City. It provides data on 27 indicators, grouped into seven categories: student enrollment and demographics; dropout rate and high school completion; student attendance, suspensions and expulsions; elementary and middle school student achievement; high school performance; youth labor force participation; and youth civic engagement. This dataset can be used to answer important questions about education in Baltimore, such as examining the relationship between community conditions and educational outcomes.

Before using this dataset, it’s important to understand the source of data for each indicator (e.g., Baltimore City Public School System, American Community Survey) so you can understand potential limitations inherent in each data set. Additionally, keep in mind that this dataset does not include students whose home address cannot be geocoded or matched between datasets due to inconsistency of information or other issues - this means that comparisons between some of these indicators may not be as accurate as is achievable with other datasets available from sources such as the Maryland Department of Education or the Baltimore City Public Schools System.

Once you are familiar with where the data comes from you can use it to answer these questions by exploring different trends within Baltimore city over time:

    • How have student enrollment numbers changed over time?
    • What has been the overall trend in dropout rates across elementary schools?
    • Are there any differences in student attendance based on school type?
    • What correlations exist between neighborhood community characteristics (such as crime rates or poverty levels), and academic achievement scores?
    • How have rates of labor force participation among adolescents shifted year-over-year?

And more! By looking at trends by geography within this diverse city we can gain valuable insight into what factors may play a role influencing educational outcomes for children growing up in different areas around Baltimore City - an essential step for developing methodologies for successful policy interventions targeting our most vulnerable populations!

    Research Ideas

    • Analyzing the correlation between student achievement and socio-economic status of the neighborhoods in which students live.
    • Creating targeted policies that are tailored to address specific educational issues showcased in each Baltimore neighborhood demographic.
    • Using data visualizations to demonstrate to residents and community leaders how their area is performing compared to other communities in terms of education, dropout rates, suspension rates, and more

    Description

This dataset contains data by school on student SAT scores relative to the SAT College and Career Readiness (CCR) Benchmark score of 1550 (critical reading, mathematics and writing sections combined) for the graduating classes of 2012 and 2013. According to research conducted by the College Board*, a score of 1550 indicates that a student will have a 65 percent or greater likelihood of achieving a B- average or higher during the first year of college.

This dataset also provides an estimated SAT Participation Rate, which equals the number of SAT test-taking seniors in the school divided by the number of seniors enrolled in the school as a percentage. These participation rates are considered an estimate because the grade level of the SAT test-taker is self-reported by the student at the time of registration for the SAT while the total number of seniors enrolled in the school is reported to the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) by the district. These are the best available estimates of SAT participation rates.

The Benchmark Performance reflect the results of only those who participate in the SAT. Because participation rates vary from school to school, the CSDE provides both the estimated Participation rates together with the Benchmark Performance in order to promote fair and valid comparisons across schools.

Note: The data are suppressed when there are too few test-takers to sufficiently protect privacy.

    Description

Academic achievement is an important index to measure the quality of education and students’ learning outcomes. Reasonable and accurate prediction of academic achievement can help improve teachers’ educational methods. And it also provides corresponding data support for the formulation of education policies. However, traditional methods for classifying academic performance have many problems, such as low accuracy, limited ability to handle nonlinear relationships, and poor handling of data sparsity. Based on this, our study analyzes various characteristics of students, including personal information, academic performance, attendance rate, family background, extracurricular activities and etc. Our work offers a comprehensive view to understand the various factors affecting students’ academic performance. In order to improve the accuracy and robustness of student performance classification, we adopted Gaussian Distribution based Data Augmentation technique (GDO), combined with multiple Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) models. We explored the application of different Machine Learning and Deep Learning models in classifying student grades. And different feature combinations and data augmentation techniques were used to evaluate the performance of multiple models in classification tasks. In addition, we also checked the synthetic data’s effectiveness with variance homogeneity and P-values, and studied how the oversampling rate affects actual classification results. Research has shown that the RBFN model based on educational habit features performs the best after using GDO data augmentation. The accuracy rate is 94.12%, and the F1 score is 94.46%. These results provide valuable references for the classification of student grades and the development of intervention strategies. New methods and perspectives in the field of educational data analysis are proposed in our study. At the same time, it has also promoted innovation and development in the intelligence of the education system.
