Survey of innovation and business strategy, number of competitors that enterprise faced with highest selling good or service in its main market, by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and enterprise size for Canada and regions from 2009 to today.
As of March 2025, Google represented 79.1 percent of the global online search engine market on desktop devices. Despite being much ahead of its competitors, this represents the lowest share ever recorded by the search engine in these devices for over two decades. Meanwhile, its long-time competitor Bing accounted for 12.21 percent, as tools like Yahoo and Yandex held shares of over 2.9 percent each. Google and the global search market Ever since the introduction of Google Search in 1997, the company has dominated the search engine market, while the shares of all other tools has been rather lopsided. The majority of Google revenues are generated through advertising. Its parent corporation, Alphabet, was one of the biggest internet companies worldwide as of 2024, with a market capitalization of 2.02 trillion U.S. dollars. The company has also expanded its services to mail, productivity tools, enterprise products, mobile devices, and other ventures. As a result, Google earned one of the highest tech company revenues in 2024 with roughly 348.16 billion U.S. dollars. Search engine usage in different countries Google is the most frequently used search engine worldwide. But in some countries, its alternatives are leading or competing with it to some extent. As of the last quarter of 2023, more than 63 percent of internet users in Russia used Yandex, whereas Google users represented little over 33 percent. Meanwhile, Baidu was the most used search engine in China, despite a strong decrease in the percentage of internet users in the country accessing it. In other countries, like Japan and Mexico, people tend to use Yahoo along with Google. By the end of 2024, nearly half of the respondents in Japan said that they had used Yahoo in the past four weeks. In the same year, over 21 percent of users in Mexico said they used Yahoo.

1.The size of disease epidemics remains difficult to predict, especially when parasites interact with multiple species. Traits of focal hosts like susceptibility could directly predict epidemic size, while other traits including competitive ability might shape it indirectly in communities with a ‘dilution effect’.
2.In a dilution effect, diluter taxa can reduce disease by regulating (lowering) the density of focal hosts (i.e., through competition), or by reducing encounters between focal hosts and parasites. However, these dilution mechanisms are rarely grounded in focal host traits, and the relative importance of host regulation vs. encounter reduction remains understudied.
3.Here, we map focal host traits to disease—via these dilution mechanisms—in communities with diluters. We measured two traits (competitive ability and susceptibility) for eight genotypes of a focal host (Daphnia), tracked the densities of each genotype in experimental mesocosms (+/- Ceriodaphnia competitor/diluters), and monitored their infections with a virulent fungal parasite (Metschnikowia) over 6-8 host generations. We disentangled the impacts of both traits on the density of infected hosts and partitioned dilution mechanisms using path models.
4.Higher susceptibility directly fueled larger epidemics. Simultaneously, weaker competitive ability indirectly suppressed epidemics by enabling higher densities of diluters. These higher densities of diluters reduced the density of infected hosts indirectly via host regulation. In contrast, encounter reduction was much weaker.
5.Our experiment strengthens the dilution effect paradigm with a predictable, traits-oriented framework. Similar traits—susceptibility, competitive ability, and their covariance—could help predict epidemic severity in a variety of other systems. Partitioning the direct and indirect effects of diluters could also delineate how they impact disease. Such trait-based insights could help broadly predict the size of epidemics in diverse communities.

In many species, males exhibit phenotypic plasticity in sexually selected traits when exposed to social cues about the intensity of sexual competition. To date, however, few studies have tested how this plasticity affects male reproductive success. We initially tested whether male mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki (Poeciliidae), change their investment in traits under pre- and post- copulatory sexual selection depending on the social environment. Focal males were exposed, for a full spermatogenesis cycle, to visual and chemical cues of rivals that were either present (competitive treatment) or absent (control). Males from the competitive treatment had significantly slower swimming sperm, but did not differ in sperm count from control males. When two males competed for a female, competitive treatment males also made significantly fewer copulation attempts and courtship displays than control males. Further, paternity analysis of 708 offspring from 148 potential sires, testing whether these changes in reproductive traits affected male reproductive success, showed that males previously exposed to cues about the presence of rivals sired significantly fewer offspring when competing with a control male. We discuss several possible explanations for these unusual findings.
Methods
We used the eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki, to test whether exposure to social cues presumed to indicate the level of sexual competition affects male investment in different sexually selected traits, and ultimately reproductive success. We experimentally manipulated the perceived level of sexual competition by placing males in either a competitive or control environments for a full spermatogenesis cycle. More specifically, we provided test males with visual and olfactory access to a female, who was either alone or housed with rival males. We then investigated whether this affected male behavior and/or sperm production. Crucially, we then tested for an effect of the social treatment on male reproductive success when males from each treatment competed one on one with each other to sire offspring.
Males were exposed to the social treatments for five weeks and were then stripped of sperm to quantify sperm number and velocity. To restore their sperm reserves, males were returned to their treatment aquarium for another week. Next, we placed a pair of size-matched males from the competitive and control treatment with a virgin female and recorded their mating behavior on the first and third day. After one week, females were transferred to separate aquaria to give birth and we recorded the total amount of offspring produced. For a proportion of the offspring we performed paternity analysis to calculate male reproductive success. Finally, we also photographed and measured males and females.

Abstract of the corresponding paper: Journal articles on language processing rarely comment on difficulties and obstacles in the construction of the material for experimental investigations. This is remarkable, given that the compilation of appropriate, i.e. valid and well-controlled, linguistic stimuli is one of the biggest challenges in psycholinguistic research. This holds in particular for languages other than English. This paper addresses a number of methodological issues that arose during the preparation of the material for an eye-tracking investigation of the Russian-German bilingual mental lexicon. As we intended to study intra- and interlingual coactivation, quadruples of two Russian and two German words with phonological overlap in the onset were needed. Thus, we discuss the concept of phonological overlap and consider phonetic and phonological differences between Russian and German. Furthermore, word frequency is known to be a crucial factor in language processing. However, several problems arise with the concept of frequency in general and in comparing frequency data from two languages. We broach this issue in the final section of this paper, presenting and discussing frequency data of different types. Lastly, we present and discuss how we assured that the pictures we used were reliably associated with the intended object names in each language, a critical pre-condition for materials to be used in the visual-world paradigm. Information on the data: The data presented here are the results of the pre-test discussed in the paper. German native speakers and Russian-German late bilinguals solved three tasks: naming, picture word matching and subjective frequency estimation of German or Russian picture/word-items.

The convention and bureaus industry markets and promotes communities and local facilities to business and leisure travelers. Operators also assist customers in locating meeting and convention sites and planning and supporting associated events. Revenue jumped over most of the past five years, but the negative effects of the pandemic challenged this trend. Stay-at-home orders, social distancing regulations and decreased consumer spending severely hurt the industry in 2020. As the vaccine was rolled out and restrictions were lifted completely, revenue jumped. Overall, revenue has inched up at a CAGR of 0.5% over the past five years to reach an estimated $3.3 billion in 2024, including an expected 2.4% rise in 2024. Profit is also expected to reach 4.0% of revenue in 2024. The industry heavily depends on travel trends, as business and leisure travelers are its core customers. The industry has benefitted from a jump in consumer spending, which has encouraged more travel. Operators have experienced various challenges regarding intensifying competition from online travel sites. The industry must increasingly compete with online travel sites that enable individuals to compare fares and directly book trips online instead of using visitor bureaus. As the economy continues to rally from pandemic-induced lows, domestic travel and inbound travel rates will continue to follow suit and accelerate. Despite growing demand for travel, conventions and other events, the industry will still compete with online travel sites, which is expected to limit revenue growth. Overall, revenue is forecast to increase at a CAGR of 1.8% to $3.6 billion over the five years to 2029.
