    Description

Automated radio telemetry systems (ARTS) have the potential to revolutionise our understanding of animal movement by providing a near-continuous record of individual locations in the wild. However, localisation error in ARTS data can be very high, especially in natural landscapes with complex vegetation structure and topography. This curtails the research questions that may be addressed with this technology. We set up an ARTS grid in a valley with heterogeneous vegetation cover in the Colombian high Andes and applied an analytical pipeline to test the effectiveness of localisation methods. We performed calibration trials to simulate animal movement in high- or low-flight, or walking on the ground, and compared workflows with varying decisions related to signal cleaning, selection, smoothing, and interpretation, along with four multilateration approaches. We also quantified the influence of spatial features on the system’s accuracy. Results showed large variation in localisation error, ranging between 0.4–43.4 m and 474–1929 m, depending on the localisation method used. We found that the selection of higher radio signal strengths and data smoothing based on the temporal autocorrelation are useful tools to improve accuracy. Moreover, terrain ruggedness, height of movement, vegetation type, and the location of animals inside or outside the grid area influence localisation error. In the case of our study system, thousands of location points were successfully estimated for two high-altitude hummingbird species that previously lacked movement data. Our case study on hummingbirds suggests ARTS grids can be used to estimate small animals’ home ranges, associations with vegetation types, and seasonality in occurrence. We present a comparative localisation pipeline, highlighting the variety of possible decisions while processing radio signal data. Overall, this study provides guidance to improve the resolution of location estimates, broadening the application of this tracking technology in the study of the spatial ecology of wild populations.

The National Airspace System (NAS) is an ever changing and complex engineering system. As the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) is developed, there will be an increased emphasis on safety and operational and environmental efficiency. Current operations in the NAS are monitored using a variety of data sources, including data from flight recorders, radar track data, weather data, and other massive data collection systems. Although numerous technologies exist to monitor the frequency of known but undesirable behaviors in the NAS, there are currently few methods that can analyze the large repositories to discover new and previously unknown events in the NAS. Having a tool to discover events that have implications for safety or incidents of operational importance, increases the awareness of such scenarios in the community and helps to broaden the overall safety of the NAS, whereas only monitoring the frequency of known events can only provide mitigations for already established problems. This paper discusses a novel approach for discovering operationally significant events in the NAS that are currently not monitored and have potential safety and/or efficiency implications using radar-track data. This paper will discuss the discovery algorithm and describe in detail some flights of interest with comments from subject matter experts who are familiar with the operations in the airspace that was studied.

The Southern Ocean is a remote, hostile environment where conducting marine biology is challenging, so we know relatively little about this important region, which is critical as a habitat for breeding and foraging of many marine endotherms. Scientists from around the world have been tracking seals, penguins, petrels, whales and albatrosses for more than two decades to learn how they spend their time at sea. The Retrospective Analysis of Antarctic Tracking Data (RAATD), was initiated by the SCAR Expert Group on Marine Mammals (EG-BAMM) in 2010. This team has assembled tracking data shared by 38 biologists from 11 different countries to accumulate the largest animal tracking database in the world, containing information from 15 species, containing over 3,400 individual animals and almost 2.5 million at-sea locations. Analysing a dataset of this size brings its own challenges and the team is developing new and innovative statistical approaches to integrate these complex data. When complete RAATD will provide a greater understanding of fundamental ecosystem processes in the Southern Ocean, help predict the future of top predator distribution and help with spatial management planning.

    Description

The target-tracking accuracy of autonomous vehicles is closely related to that of onboard sensors. Methods such as image processing and base station positioning are susceptible to various types of interference in real-world scenarios, resulting in sensor data errors or even losses that ultimately affect the tracking accuracy of autonomous vehicles. This study proposes a target-tracking control method that relies solely on wheel odometry to address this issue. This method incorporates an extended state observer to compensate for the cumulative errors generated by the odometry mechanism, effectively enhancing the robustness and accuracy of the system in complex environments. In addition, a hyperbolic-tangent line-of-sight guidance strategy based on a partition-switching mechanism is designed to improve the dynamic response capability of an autonomous vehicle. This strategy nonlinearly adjusts the tracking error to generate the desired heading angle and velocity, ensuring that the target path tracking is rapid and smooth. First, we establish a mathematical model of an autonomous vehicle and combine the hyperbolic-tangent line-of-sight guidance strategy with a noise-resistant active disturbance rejection controller to achieve high-precision target tracking in dynamic environments. Second, an extended state observer is employed to perform real-time observations and compensate for unknown disturbances during localization, significantly reducing the impact of cumulative errors. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using numerical simulations and real vehicle experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared with the ET-Fuzzy-MPC method, the proposed method lowered the average position tracking error by 45.39% under complex road conditions. In practical curved-path tests, the vehicle's tracking error remained stable to within 0.192 m, representing a significant improvement in the target tracking accuracy and dynamic response performance.
