    Description

This book is written for statisticians, data analysts, programmers, researchers, teachers, students, professionals, and general consumers on how to perform different types of statistical data analysis for research purposes using the R programming language. R is an open-source software and object-oriented programming language with a development environment (IDE) called RStudio for computing statistics and graphical displays through data manipulation, modelling, and calculation. R packages and supported libraries provides a wide range of functions for programming and analyzing of data. Unlike many of the existing statistical softwares, R has the added benefit of allowing the users to write more efficient codes by using command-line scripting and vectors. It has several built-in functions and libraries that are extensible and allows the users to define their own (customized) functions on how they expect the program to behave while handling the data, which can also be stored in the simple object system. For all intents and purposes, this book serves as both textbook and manual for R statistics particularly in academic research, data analytics, and computer programming targeted to help inform and guide the work of the R users or statisticians. It provides information about different types of statistical data analysis and methods, and the best scenarios for use of each case in R. It gives a hands-on step-by-step practical guide on how to identify and conduct the different parametric and non-parametric procedures. This includes a description of the different conditions or assumptions that are necessary for performing the various statistical methods or tests, and how to understand the results of the methods. The book also covers the different data formats and sources, and how to test for reliability and validity of the available datasets. Different research experiments, case scenarios and examples are explained in this book. It is the first book to provide a comprehensive description and step-by-step practical hands-on guide to carrying out the different types of statistical analysis in R particularly for research purposes with examples. Ranging from how to import and store datasets in R as Objects, how to code and call the methods or functions for manipulating the datasets or objects, factorization, and vectorization, to better reasoning, interpretation, and storage of the results for future use, and graphical visualizations and representations. Thus, congruence of Statistics and Computer programming for Research.

    Description

Crime isn't a topic most people want to use mental energy to think about. We want to avoid harm, protect our loved ones, and hold on to what we claim is ours. So how do we remain vigilant without digging too deep into the filth that is crime? Data, of course. The focus of our study is to explore possible trends between crime and communities in the city of Calgary. Our purpose is visualize Calgary criminal behaviour in order to help increase awareness for both citizens and law enforcement. Through the use of our visuals, individuals can make more informed decisions to improve the overall safety of their lives. Some of the main concerns of the study include: how crime rates increase with population, which areas in Calgary have the most crime, and if crime adheres to time-sensative patterns.

    Description

This article discusses how to make statistical graphics a more prominent element of the undergraduate statistics curricula. The focus is on several different types of assignments that exemplify how to incorporate graphics into a course in a pedagogically meaningful way. These assignments include having students deconstruct and reconstruct plots, copy masterful graphs, create one-minute visual revelations, convert tables into “pictures,” and develop interactive visualizations, for example, with the virtual earth as a plotting canvas. In addition to describing the goals and details of each assignment, we also discuss the broader topic of graphics and key concepts that we think warrant inclusion in the statistics curricula. We advocate that more attention needs to be paid to this fundamental field of statistics at all levels, from introductory undergraduate through graduate level courses. With the rapid rise of tools to visualize data, for example, Google trends, GapMinder, ManyEyes, and Tableau, and the increased use of graphics in the media, understanding the principles of good statistical graphics, and having the ability to create informative visualizations is an ever more important aspect of statistics education. Supplementary materials containing code and data for the assignments are available online.

    Description

Trusted Research Environments (TREs) enable analysis of sensitive data under strict security assertions that protect the data with technical organizational and legal measures from (accidentally) being leaked outside the facility. While many TREs exist in Europe, little information is available publicly on the architecture and descriptions of their building blocks & their slight technical variations. To shine light on these problems, we give an overview of existing, publicly described TREs and a bibliography linking to the system description. We further analyze their technical characteristics, especially in their commonalities & variations and provide insight on their data type characteristics and availability. Our literature study shows that 47 TREs worldwide provide access to sensitive data of which two-thirds provide data themselves, predominantly via secure remote access. Statistical offices make available a majority of available sensitive data records included in this study.

    Methodology

We performed a literature study covering 47 TREs worldwide using scholarly databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct), a computer science library (dblp.org), Google and grey literature focusing on retrieving the following source material:

    • Peer-reviewed articles where available,
    • TRE websites,
    • TRE metadata catalogs.

The goal for this literature study is to discover existing TREs, analyze their characteristics and data availability to give an overview on available infrastructure for sensitive data research as many European initiatives have been emerging in recent months.

    Technical details

This dataset consists of five comma-separated values (.csv) files describing our inventory:

    • countries.csv: Table of countries with columns id (number), name (text) and code (text, in ISO 3166-A3 encoding, optional)
    • tres.csv: Table of TREs with columns id (number), name (text), countryid (number, refering to column id of table countries), structureddata (bool, optional), datalevel (one of [1=de-identified, 2=pseudonomized, 3=anonymized], optional), outputcontrol (bool, optional), inceptionyear (date, optional), records (number, optional), datatype (one of [1=claims, 2=linked records]), optional), statistics_office (bool), size (number, optional), source (text, optional), comment (text, optional)
    • access.csv: Table of access modes of TREs with columns id (number), suf (bool, optional), physical_visit (bool, optional), external_physical_visit (bool, optional), remote_visit (bool, optional)
    • inclusion.csv: Table of included TREs into the literature study with columns id (number), included (bool), exclusion reason (one of [peer review, environment, duplicate], optional), comment (text, optional)
    • major_fields.csv: Table of data categorization into the major research fields with columns id (number), life_sciences (bool, optional), physical_sciences (bool, optional), arts_and_humanities (bool, optional), social_sciences (bool, optional).

Additionally, a MariaDB (10.5 or higher) schema definition .sql file is needed, properly modelling the schema for databases:

    • schema.sql: Schema definition file to create the tables and views used in the analysis.

The analysis was done through Jupyter Notebook which can be found in our source code repository: https://gitlab.tuwien.ac.at/martin.weise/tres/-/blob/master/analysis.ipynb

    Description

Despite exploratory data analysis (EDA) is a powerful approach for uncovering insights from unfamiliar datasets, existing EDA tools face challenges in assisting users to assess the progress of exploration and synthesize coherent insights from isolated findings. To address these challenges, we present FactExplorer, a novel fact-based EDA system that shifts the analysis focus from raw data to data facts. FactExplorer employs a hybrid logical-visual representation, providing users with a comprehensive overview of all potential facts at the outset of their exploration. Moreover, FactExplorer introduces fact-mining techniques, including topic-based drill-down and transition path search capabilities. These features facilitate in-depth analysis of facts and enhance the understanding of interconnections between specific facts. Finally, we present a usage scenario and conduct a user study to assess the effectiveness of FactExplorer. The results indicate that FactExplorer facilitates the understanding of isolated findings and enables users to steer a thorough and effective EDA.
