    Description

The computer peripheral manufacturing industry in the US has faced significant shifts in market dynamics since 2020, where revenue declined sharply because of disrupted supplies of crucial semiconductors and electronic inputs. As supply chains and demand have stabilized since the pandemic, US manufacturers have benefited from more downstream customers focusing on diversifying their supply sources in favor of domestic manufacturers. As imports have become less competitive compared to previous periods, US companies have benefited from a greater market foothold. With tensions involving China also contributing towards a weakening of import growth, industry revenue has increased at a CAGR of 1.8% over the past five years, which includes growth of 1.2% to reach $12.0 billion during 2025. Profit growth meanwhile, has remained steady as improvements in manufacturing efficiencies have been offset by higher purchasing costs in recent years. In-demand storage solutions have evolved alongside the prolific adoption of cloud infrastructure and additional technology. Leading storage device manufacturers have capitalized on these trends, developing reliable high-capacity storage devices tailored for cloud storage and AI applications. Similarly, demand for wireless and Bluetooth peripherals has surged to support remote workspaces and e-commerce has become a valuable channel for these manufacturers. Moving forward, rising geopolitical tensions, especially between China and Taiwan, pose significant risks to the industry's supply chain reliability. Taiwan's role as a semiconductor hub continues to make the industry's supply chain vulnerable and potential conflicts could disrupt production for US manufacturers reliant on Taiwanese semiconductors. To mitigate risks, the US CHIPS Act will continue to foster domestic semiconductor production, offering future stability to US manufacturers that proactively diversify their source inputs. This will be crucial as AI integration will continue reshaping the industry, with manufacturers incorporating AI into products and production processes to meet demand for products and become more efficient. As the market matures, industry consolidation is anticipated, though demand for industry products will remain high moving forward. As a result, industry revenue is forecast to increase at a CAGR of 2.3% over the five years to 2030 to reach $13.4 billion.

    Description

The Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing industry is highly competitive, with low selling prices and tight profitability. These low prices, as well as the release of new and enhanced products, computer software and applications, have helped to drive sales. However, computer and peripheral equipment manufacturing activity has largely shifted to countries with low-cost labour and more efficient supply chains. Revenue is estimated to decline at a compound annual rate of 2.3% over the five years through 2024-25 to £2.3 billion, largely due to falling unit prices and high import penetration. Manufacturers have had some respite in the form of government and business contracts, with some manufacturers operating in niche markets performing reasonably well. However, competition from abroad has intensified significantly. This has forced some unprofitable manufacturers out of the industry, while some have transferred production capacity to countries where manufacturing costs are lower than in the UK, like China and parts of Eastern Europe. The number of companies operating in the industry has consequently fallen. In 2024-25, revenue is expected to drop by 5.1% as poor economic conditions hold back sales to both households and businesses. The next five years promise opportunities for growth if UK manufacturers are able to take advantage of them. Ever-advancing technology in the fields of AI and quantum computing will demand improved hardware equipment to keep up. The government has committed billions of spending to help the UK keep at the cutting edge of technology, which should prop up future sales – especially as the public sector is one of the industry’s largest markets. Growth is likely to be supported by an increased emphasis on niche products, where manufacturers can compete with low-cost foreign competitors. Revenue is forecast to edge upwards at a compound annual rate of 2.4% over the five years through 2029-30 to £2.5 billion.

    Description

Since 2019, the IT equipment and accessories manufacturing sector has recorded negative growth on average. Turnover in the sector has fallen by an average of 10.7% per year over the past five years to 3.5 billion euros. In 2020 in particular, turnover slumped by 50.2 %. The immense decline in turnover in 2020 is mainly due to the closure of the production site of the largest industry player Fujitsu. IBISWorld expects industry turnover to fall by 1.7% in the current year.Although the ongoing digitalisation of society and business processes is having a positive impact on the industry, industry players can only benefit from this to a limited extent. This is because countries with lower production costs, such as China, benefit from mass production, which enables them to offer their products at lower prices than German manufacturers. As industry players cannot compete with these low prices due to higher production costs in Germany, they have not been able to achieve quality leadership in IT devices such as laptops and tablets. One way to achieve international success despite this is to develop and produce niche products such as servers or self-service terminals. Competition is less fierce in these areas and technological innovations can be achieved with less effort.IBISWorld expects the industry's turnover to fall by an average of 1.5% per year to 3.2 billion euros by 2029. One of the reasons for this is likely to be strong international competitive pressure. In addition, foreign manufacturers of IT equipment and accessories have little incentive to open new production facilities or expand existing ones in Germany, as the market is already saturated. Following the withdrawal of Fujitsu Technology Solutions GmbH from the market, it is mainly companies that remain in the market that are focussed on niche segments and not on the highly competitive mass market. The industry's profit margin is therefore likely to increase between 2024 and 2029.

    Description

The Computer and Computer Peripheral Retailing industry has endured volatile operating conditions over recent years. Technological advancements and the ensuing release of new products that supersede existing lines in terms of weight, speed and power have fuelled consumer demand. Consumers' growing adoption of IT and telecommunications products and improved computer literacy have also supported industry revenue. However, consumers have been increasingly purchasing from only-only retailers that offer competitive prices with lower overhead costs, which has challenged retailers and dampened revenue in recent years. Rising competition from online-only retailers has encouraged retailers to pursue multichannel strategies. Retailers have invested in upgrading their digital presence and instore experience to provide seamless services to customers. Computer and computer peripheral retailers have benefited from working-from-home and online learning trends, which lifted industry revenue over the three years through the end of 2021-22. At the same time, robust demand for computers and computer peripherals helped retailers elevate their profitability, as consumers had to accept inflated prices triggered by component shortages, especially semiconductor chips. However, as more consumers have been returning to offices and reducing their spending on discretionary purchases – including computers and computer peripherals – retailers have suffered from revenue drops. Price-based competition and online-only retailers' rising popularity have added to retailers’ woes, constraining industry revenue. Overall, revenue is expected to have diminished at an annualised 0.3% over the five years through 2024-25, to $1.5 billion. This includes an anticipated revenue drop of 3.3% in 2024-25. Industry revenue growth is set to be subdued over the coming years as competitive pressures intensify. Revenue is forecast to climb at an annualised 1.7% over the five years through 2029-30, to $1.7 billion. Mounting internal and external competition will continue to place downwards pressure on revenue growth as retailers are forced to offer competitive prices to attract consumers. Market substitution will likely further constrain revenue growth as consumers spend less on computers and instead focus on upgrading their smartphones, which aren’t included in the industry.
