A survey held in June 2020 found that the majority of Americans feel that historical films should be made available to rent or stream, regardless of possible racist themes. The conversation around historical films portraying stereotypes that are considered racist in modern times led to streaming services reconsidering what to show. This survey compared consumer attitudes to 16 movies, and the most controversial was found to be 'Song of the South' with nine percent of respondents stating the film should not be made available, whilst family favorite 'Peter Pan' was considered to be an historical movie by 69 percent of respondents.

    Description

As ESG investing has gone mainstream in the public equity space, the spotlight has turned to fixed income investments and sovereign bonds in particular. Investors increasingly recognize that ESG factors, such as corruption, climate protection, and human rights, could impact the long-term solvency of government bond issuers.

ISS ESG’s Country Controversy Assessment enables investors to assess a country’s exposure to various controversies, including alignment with international norms and conventions, to effectively manage potential ESG risks and opportunities. The assessment covers various ESG factors across the following themes:

    • Authoritarian Regime • Biodiversity • Child Labour • Climate Protection • Coal Power • Corruption • Death Penalty • Discrimination • Euthanasia • Freedom of Association • Freedom of Speech & Press • Global Peace Index • Human Rights • Labour Rights • Military Budget • Money Laundering • Nuclear Power • Nuclear Weapons • Whaling

Coverage for the Country Controversy Assessment includes more than 800 sovereign issuers:

    • Approximately 100% coverage of global sovereign debt issued • More than 120 countries as well as Hong Kong and the European Union • All member countries of the European Union and the OECD

Analysts gather the controversy-related information from credible and acknowledged external sources, such as indices and blacklists, and the ISS ESG Country Rating to deliver high-quality, relevant and actionable data.

    Examples of sources:

    • Amnesty International • Financial Action Task Force • Germanwatch • Stockholm International Peace Research Institute

Data is used by a broad range of institutional investors, asset managers, asset owners, fund managers, banks, government institutions, universities and research firms.

    Description

This study investigated the presence of dynamic patterns of interpersonal coordination in extended deceptive conversations across multi-modal channels of behavior. Using a "devil's advocate" paradigm, the researchers experimentally elicited deception and truth across controversial social and political topics in which conversational partners either agreed or disagreed, and where one partner was surreptitiously asked to argue an opinion opposite of what he or she really believed. The researchers focused on interpersonal coordination as an emergent behavioral signal that captured inter-dependencies between conversational partners, both as the coupling of head movements over the span of milliseconds, measured via a windowed lagged cross correlation (WLCC) technique, and more global temporal dependencies across speech rate, using cross recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA). Another focus that was considered was how interpersonal coordination might be shaped by strategic, adaptive conversational goals associated with deception. This collection includes both qualitative transcripts and a quantitative dataset including respondent demographics (including sex, age, and ethnicity). The qualitative dataset consists of 94 written transcripts of audio-recorded conversations, lasting eight minutes each in length. The quantitative dataset includes 5 variables for 102 cases.

    Description

Survey researchers have long protected the privacy of respondents via de-identification (removing names and other directly identifying information) before sharing data. Although these procedures help, recent research demonstrates that they fail to protect respondents from intentional re-identification attacks, a problem that threatens to undermine vast survey enterprises in academia, government, and industry. This is especially a problem in political science because political beliefs are not merely the subject of our scholarship; they represent some of the most important information respondents want to keep private. We confirm the problem in practice by re-identifying individuals from a survey about a controversial referendum declaring life beginning at conception. We build on the concept of “differential privacy” to offer new data sharing procedures with mathematical guarantees for protecting respondent privacy and statistical validity guarantees for social scientists analyzing differentially private data. The cost of these new procedures is larger standard errors, which can be overcome with somewhat larger sample sizes.

    Description

This submission consists of 12 data sets containing Twitter IDs pertaining to 6 AI controversies identified by UK-based experts in AI and Society as especially significant during the period 2012-2021. The data sets were collected by researchers at the University of Warwick as part of the 3-year international project “Shaping AI” which mapped controversies about “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) during 2012-2022. Research teams in the UK, France, Germany and Canada analysed controversies about AI in their countries across different spheres: research, policy and the media during this 10-year period. The UK team at the University of Warwick designed and undertook an analysis of research controversies about AI in the relevant period following a standpoint methodology. Our study began with an online consultation that took place in the Autumn of 2021, in which we asked UK-based experts in AI from across disciplines to identify what are the most important concerns, disputes and problematics that have arisen in the last 10 years in relation to AI as a strategic area of research.

Based on the responses to this expert consultation—described in detail in Marres et al (2024) and Poletti et al (forthcoming)—we identified a broad range of relevant controversy topics, objects and problems. To select controversies for further analysis, we considered their research intensity, in the form of a frequency count of research publications mentioned by respondents in relation to controversy topics.

On this basis, we selected 6 AI research controversies for further research: COMPAS; NHS+Deepmind; Gaydar; Facial recognition; Stochastic Parrots (LLMs) & Deeplearning as a solution for AI. For each of these controversies, we collected Twitter data by submitting queries to Twitter's academic API using TWARC between January 2022 and June 2022. Further details of the methods of data collection and curation can be found in the methods file with further detail of the queries in the ReadMe file.

    Description

Human footprints at White Sands National Park, New Mexico, USA, reportedly date to between ~23,000 and 21,000 years ago according to radiocarbon dating of seeds from the aquatic plant Ruppia cirrhosa. These ages remain controversial because of potential old carbon reservoir effects that could compromise their accuracy. We present new calibrated 14C ages of terrestrial pollen collected from the same stratigraphic horizons as those of the Ruppia seeds, along with optically stimulated luminescence ages of sediments from within the human footprint–bearing sequence, to evaluate the veracity of the seed ages. The results show that the chronologic framework originally established for the White Sands footprints is robust and reaffirm that humans were present in North America during the Last Glacial Maximum.

    Description

The use of corticosteroids in septic shock remains controversial. It has been demonstrated that high doses of steroids (30 mg/kg methylprednisolone) for short periods of time are not beneficial. More recent studies using smaller doses (200–300 mg/day hydrocortisone) for longer periods of time have shown beneficial effects. These positive effects have included reversal of shock, trends toward decreased organ system dysfunction and decreased mortality. Based on the high proportion of patients who have relative adrenal insufficiency, the benefits of low doses of steroids and the minimal risks, steroids should be used to treat septic shock.

This national survey collected data on Americans' attitudes concerning freedom of expression issues arising from the exhibit of an art show at the Brooklyn Museum in the fall of 1999. Debate about the show, titled "Sensation," centered on a painting of the Virgin Mary by British artist Chris Ofili that incorporated some unconventional images into its design. The survey included questions about awareness of the debate, attitudes toward the public display of potentially controversial art, attitudes toward government censorship of art, and attitudes toward public funding of museums that display controversial art. Respondents were also asked for their demographic information including age, sex, and income. A total of 1,005 computer-assisted telephone interviews were conducted between September 29 and October 3, 1999.
