    Description

    As of January 13, 2023, Sweden had reported 2,687,840 confirmed coronavirus cases. Cases first started to rise sharply in spring 2020, when the number of new confirmed cases per day started to increase, however the peak was much higher in winter 2021/22.

    The novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

    The coronavirus was officially declared as a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. The novel coronavirus was first detected at a fish and seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, in the Hubei province, in late December 2019. Since then, the virus reached over 668 million cases worldwide as of January 9, 2023.

    The first coronavirus related death in Sweden was reported on March 11, 2020 and as of January 13, 2023, the number of deaths reached a total of 22,645. The highest number of deaths occurred among the age group from 80 to 90 years old.

    Context

    With European governments struggling with a 'second-wave' of rising cases, hospitalizations and deaths resulting from the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19), I wanted to make a comparative analysis between the data coming out of major European nations since the start of the pandemic.

    It has been well publicized that Sweden has taken a different approach to most Western European nations when it comes to public policy regarding COVID-19. This has drawn significant attention from across the world and so, allied to the fact that Sweden publishes it's data in a clear and understandable way that is easy to access, it seemed like a good place to start.

    In time, I hope to construct other European national datasets for direct comparison - probably starting with my own country, the United Kingdom.

    I also should say I am not an Epidemiologist, Sociologist or even a Data Scientist. I am actually a Mechanical Engineer! The objective here is to improve my data science skills and maybe provide some useful data to the wider community.

    As of January 6, 2021, a total of 4,275 coronavirus (COVID-19) patients have been hospitalized in intensive care in Sweden. The number of male patients was 3,059, while the number of female patients in intensive care due to the virus was 1,216. The number of new patients in intensive care with confirmed coronavirus infection peaked in April. After a period of relatively scarce admissions, intensive care units saw a rise in admissions around October. On January 6, 2021 for instance, eight patients were transferred to intensive care in Sweden.

    The first case of COVID-19 in Sweden was diagnosed in late January 2020, the first recommendations against the spread of the virus were released in mid-March, and the peak of the first wave of the pandemic was reached in March-June. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the short-term effects of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis, staging, and treatment. Data in the National Prostate Cancer Register (NPCR) of Sweden on newly diagnosed PCa cases and on the number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed between 18 March 2020 and 2 June 2020 were compared with those in the corresponding time periods in 2017–2019, as reported until January 31 of the year after each study period. During the study period in 2020, 36% fewer PCa cases were registered in NPCR compared with the corresponding time period in previous years: 1458 cases in 2020 vs a mean of 2285 cases in 2017–2019. The decrease in new PCa registrations was more pronounced in men above age 75 years, down 51%, than in men aged 70–75, down 37%, and in men below age 70, down 28%. There was no decrease in the number of radical prostatectomies and number of radical radiotherapy courses increased by 32%. During the peak of the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of men diagnosed with PCa in Sweden decreased by one third compared with previous years, whereas there was no decrease in the number of curative treatments.

Description

As of January 13, 2023, Sweden had reported 2,687,840 confirmed coronavirus cases. Cases first started to rise sharply in spring 2020, when the number of new confirmed cases per day started to increase, however the peak was much higher in winter 2021/22.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

The coronavirus was officially declared as a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. The novel coronavirus was first detected at a fish and seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, in the Hubei province, in late December 2019. Since then, the virus reached over 668 million cases worldwide as of January 9, 2023.

Coronavirus-related deaths in Sweden

The first coronavirus related death in Sweden was reported on March 11, 2020 and as of January 13, 2023, the number of deaths reached a total of 22,645. The highest number of deaths occurred among the age group from 80 to 90 years old.
