    These reports summarise the surveillance of influenza, COVID-19 and other seasonal respiratory illnesses.

    Weekly findings from community, primary care, secondary care and mortality surveillance systems are included in the reports.

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the 2020 to 2021 season the weekly reports will be published all year round.

    This page includes reports published from 8 October 2020 to the 8 July 2021.

    Due to a misclassification of 2 subgroups within the Asian and Asian British and Black and Black British ethnic categories, the proportions of deaths for these ethnic categories in reports published between week 27 2021 and week 29 2021 were incorrect. These have been corrected from week 30 2021 report onwards.

    The impact of the correction specifically affects the proportion of deaths with an Asian and Asian British and/or Black and Black British ethnic categories. The total number of deaths reported was unaffected. Other ethnicity data included in the reports were not affected by this issue.

    Description

    Following the health and social care statistical outputs consultation, the Department of Health and Social Care has formally stopped updates to the  wider impacts of COVID-19 on health (WICH)  monitoring tool. Files with data for the metrics published in the WICH online tool and their definitions have been added to this page.

    The WICH monitoring tool collates metrics across a range of wider impacts to provide stakeholders with a single point of access. This will enable stakeholders to:

    • monitor changes over time or against an agreed point in time
    • make timely, informed decisions
    • intervene early to mitigate against poor outcomes
    • understand the wider context on population health

    The WICH tool was first published on 16 July 2020. Since then, we have continually developed the tool to include additional metrics and make it easier to use.

    On 1 October 2021, Public Health England (PHE) closed and responsibility for the WICH tool transferred to the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID).

    On 5 November 2020, PHE published an in-depth commentary and associated tables on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on grocery shopping behaviours during the period March to June 2020.

    On January 12, 2021, over 4.5 thousand individuals in the UK were admitted to hospital with coronavirus (COVID-19), the highest single amount since the start of the pandemic. The daily hospital cases started to rise significantly at the end of 2020 and into January 2021, however since then the number of hospitalizations fell dramatically as the UK managed to vaccinate millions against COVID-19. Overall, since the pandemic started around 994 thousand people in the UK have been hospitalized with the virus.

    About this dataset

    This dataset contains the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each English Upper Tier Local Authority over the past eight days. Aggregated from Public Health England data, this dataset provides unprecedented insight into how quickly the virus has been able to spread in local communities throughout England. Despite testing limitations, understanding these localized patterns of infection can help inform important public health decisions by local authorities and healthcare workers alike.

    It is essential to bear in mind that this data is likely an underestimation of true infection rates due to limited testing -- it is critical not to underestimate the risk the virus poses on a local scale! Use this dataset at your own discretion with caution and care; consider supplementing it with other health and socio-economic metrics for a holistic picture of regional trends over time.

    This dataset features information surrounding GSS codes and names as well as total numbers of recorded COVID-19 cases per English Upper Tier Local Authority on January 5th 2023 (TotalCases_2023-01-05)

    Daily official UK Covid data. The data is available per country (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and for different regions in England. The different regions are split into two different files as part of the data is directly gathered by the NHS (National Health Service). The files that contain the word 'nhsregion' in their name, include data related to hospitals only, such as number of admissions or number of people in respirators. The files containing the word 'region' in their name, include the rest of the data, such as number of cases, number of vaccinated people or number of tests performed per day. The next paragraphs describe the columns for the different file types.

    Description

    Data forming the COVID-19 SARI-Watch data set relate to demographic, risk factor, treatment, and outcome information for patients admitted to hospital with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, as recorded in the PHE COVID-19 SARI-Watch Surveillance System.

    SARI-Watch data are to be collected for the purposes of direct care, service monitoring, planning and research in response to the spread of COVID-19, including for the following purposes identified in the COVID-19 Directions (see below): •understanding information about patient access to health services and adult social care services as a direct or indirect result of COVID-19 and the availability and capacity of those services •monitoring and managing the response to COVID-19 by health and social care bodies and the Government, including providing information to the public about COVID-19 and its effectiveness, and information about capacity, medicines, equipment, supplies, services and the workforce within the health services and adult social care services •research and planning in relation to COVID-19, such as providing COVID-19 diagnosis.

    This is a release of management information for anonymous summary data for those patients that have been identified on the Shielded Patient List (SPL). Its purpose is to make the summary data available to a wider audience, as open data, to enable a broad base of users to perform analysis from it. The purpose behind releasing this data is to present regional and local data to allow for its use in public health. It will also allow for greater analysis, modelling and planning to be performed using the latest data, to aid in the response to the pandemic. We will update this weekly and we would welcome your feedback to help us develop our open data sets. The data that is published is based on version 74 of the SPL clinical methodology, with the data extracted as at 21 September 2021.

    The COVID-19 Health Inequalities Monitoring in England (CHIME) tool brings together data relating to the direct impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) on factors such as mortality rates, hospital admissions, confirmed cases and vaccinations.

    By presenting inequality breakdowns - including by age, sex, ethnic group, level of deprivation and region - the tool provides a single point of access to:

    • show how inequalities have changed during the course of the pandemic and what the current cumulative picture is
    • bring together data in one tool to enable users to access and use the intelligence more easily
    • provide indicators with a consistent methodology across different data sets to facilitate understanding
    • support users to identify and address inequalities within their areas, and identify priority areas for recovery

    In the March 2023 update, data has been updated for deaths, hospital admissions and vaccinations. Data on inequalities in vaccination uptake within upper tier local authorities has been added to the tool for the first time. This replaces data for lower tier local authorities, published in December 2022, allowing the reporting of a wider range of inequality breakdowns within these areas.

    Updates to the CHIME tool are paused pending the results of a review of the content and presentation of data within the tool. The tool has not been updated since the 16 March 2023.

These reports summarise the surveillance of influenza, COVID-19 and other seasonal respiratory illnesses.

Weekly findings from community, primary care, secondary care and mortality surveillance systems are included in the reports.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the 2020 to 2021 season the weekly reports will be published all year round.

This page includes reports published from 8 October 2020 to the 8 July 2021.

Due to a misclassification of 2 subgroups within the Asian and Asian British and Black and Black British ethnic categories, the proportions of deaths for these ethnic categories in reports published between week 27 2021 and week 29 2021 were incorrect. These have been corrected from week 30 2021 report onwards.

The impact of the correction specifically affects the proportion of deaths with an Asian and Asian British and/or Black and Black British ethnic categories. The total number of deaths reported was unaffected. Other ethnicity data included in the reports were not affected by this issue.
