A Green Infrastructure Network (GIN) is an interconnected system of natural areas and open spaces that conserves ecosystems and functions, while providing benefits to both wildlife and people. Defined in Surrey’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy (BCS), the GIN is composed of 3,885 hectares (ha) of land consisting of urban ecosystems and habitat corridors, sites and hubs providing a range of crucial ecosystem services. When the BCS was adopted, about 70% of the lands identified were already under public ownership (such as City, Provincial, Regional or Federal), including 2,019 ha of City-owned park land. This leaves approximately 1,215 ha of private lands to be purchased or stewarded. The amount of GIN land protected and stewarded is a measure of how well the City is doing to preserve and enhance natural habitats and biodiversity. The City aims to manage 100% of the GIN over time through public ownership and third party stewardship programs on private land.
See this and other sustainability indicators on the City's Sustainability Dashboard.

The crime and collision incident data is drawn from the provincial Police Records Information Management Environment (PRIME), a live records management system which captures crime and occurrences that are either reported to or discovered by police in BC. The data is subject to change over time for a variety of reasons, including late reporting and reclassification due to changes in circumstance, the stage and/or outcome of an investigation, or corrective action taken for quality assurance purposes. As such, newly published data may vary from previously published datasets due to the dynamic nature of offences being reported, investigated and/or cleared. More information on qualifiers and limitations with respect to crime data can be found on the Surrey RCMP website.
Crime incident data focuses on those high volume offences where a greater awareness regarding crime occurrences and concentrations of crime will have the biggest impact in terms of directing or influencing community engagement and mobilization to enhance community safety. Having a better understanding of neighbourhood conditions and relative risks with respect to victimization will help residents and businesses make informed decisions about proactive steps they can take to contribute to crime prevention and overall crime reduction efforts across the City. Traffic collision data is also available to help raise awareness of the most problematic roadways and intersections in the City.
Incident location information is generalized (addresses are listed to the hundred block) and as result, only approximate location of incidents are provided. The incident categories in the dataset include:
Break & Enter - Business
Break & Enter - Residence
Fatal/Injury Collision
Shoplifting
Theft from Motor Vehicle
Theft of Motor Vehicle
