The natural gas prices for household end users (excluding taxes, levies, and VAT) in Romania increased significantly by 0.1 euro cents per kWh (+83.33 percent) in the first half of 2022 in comparison to the previous six months. As a consequence, consumption expenditure in Romanian households with water and electricity represented 16.1 percent of the monthly overall expenses.

A significant increase was noticed in electricity prices for non-household consumers in both semesters of 2022. The price for the second semester of 2022 was almost triple the price from the same semester in 2021, rising from 15.38 euro cents per kilowatt-hour to 42.51 euro cents per kilowatt-hour. However, by the end of first half of 2024, the prices more than halved, reaching 19.03 euro cents per kilowatt-hour.

The natural gas prices for household consumers have slightly increased in Romania in the first half of 2024. The price for natural gas that household consumers were paying in the first semester of 2023 the price has increased by six percent compared to the same semester of the following year, the average price for household consumers in 2022 reached 12.65 euro cents per kilowatt-hour. However, in 2024, the prices dropped considerably, reaching a price of 5.81 euro cents in the first half of 2024.

Liberalization of the natural gas market

The first measures towards the liberalization of the natural gas market in Romania were taken in the beginning of 2020, and the process is expected to be completed by April 2021. According to a study realized by iSenseSolutions, almost half of the Romanians surveyed were of the opinion that gas prices would increase after the liberalization of the natural gas market. In these circumstances, the majority of people were considering changing their current natural gas supplier. Unfortunately, only two out of ten Romanians considered themselves to be sufficiently informed about what the liberalization of the natural gas market means and what are its effects.

European Green Deal

The European Green Deal is a growth strategy which aims to transform the EU into a prosperous society based on an economy where there are no emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. According to a study conducted by INSCOP Research, Romanians had a good opinion about the Green Deal’s objective to reduce CO2 emissions and coal-based energy. At the same time, more than one third or respondents believed that the fight against plastic waste should be given top priority in the European Green Deal.
