    West Virginia and Kansas had the lowest cost of living across all U.S. states, with composite costs being half of those found in Hawaii. This was according to a composite index that compares prices for various goods and services on a state-by-state basis. In West Virginia, the cost of living index amounted to **** — well below the national benchmark of 100. Virginia— which had an index value of ***** — was only slightly above that benchmark. Expensive places to live included Hawaii, Massachusetts, and California. Housing costs in the U.S. Housing is usually the highest expense in a household’s budget. In 2023, the average house sold for approximately ******* U.S. dollars, but house prices in the Northeast and West regions were significantly higher. Conversely, the South had some of the least expensive housing. In West Virginia, Mississippi, and Louisiana, the median price of the typical single-family home was less than ******* U.S. dollars. Utility costs such as electricity, natural gas, water, and internet also influence the cost of living. In Alaska, Hawaii, and Connecticut, the average monthly utility cost exceeded *** U.S. dollars. That was because of the significantly higher prices for electricity and natural gas in these states.

    In October 2025, 63 percent of households in Great Britain reported that their cost of living had increased in the previous month, compared with 72 percent in April. Although the share of people reporting a cost of living increase has generally been falling since August 2022, when 91 percent of households reported an increase, the most recent figures indicate that the Cost of Living Crisis is still ongoing for many households in the UK.     There is more to housing affordability than the rent or mortgage you pay. Transportation costs are the second-biggest budget item for most families, but it can be difficult for people to fully factor transportation costs into decisions about where to live and work. The Location Affordability Index (LAI) is a user-friendly source of standardized data at the neighborhood (census tract) level on combined housing and transportation costs to help consumers, policymakers, and developers make more informed decisions about where to live, work, and invest.     Context:

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as “a statistical measure of change, over time, of the prices of goods and services in major expenditure groups--such as food, housing, apparel, transportation, and medical care--typically purchased by urban consumers. Essentially, it compares the cost of a sample of goods and services in a specific month relative to the cost of the same "market basket" in an earlier reference period.

    This dataset was collected June 27th, 2017 and may not be up-to-date.

    The revised CPI introduced by the BLS in 1998 includes indexes for two populations; urban wage earners and clerical workers (CW), and all urban consumers (CU). This dataset covers all urban consumers (CU).

    The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a statistical measure of change, over time, of the prices of goods and services in major expenditure groups--such as food, housing, apparel, transportation, and medical care--typically purchased by urban consumers. Essentially, it compares the cost of a sample "market basket" of goods and services in a specific month relative to the cost of the same "market basket" in an earlier reference period. This reference period is designated as the base period.

    As a result of the 1998 revision, both the CW and the CU utilize updated expenditure weights based upon data tabulated from three years (1982, 1983, and 1984) of the Consumer Expenditure Survey and incorporate a number of technical improvements, including an updated and revised item structure.

    To construct the two indexes, prices for about 100,000 items and data on about 8,300 housing units are collected in a sample of 91 urban places. Comparison of indexes for individual CMSA's or cities show only the relative change over time in prices between locations. These indexes cannot be used to measure interarea differences in price levels or living costs.

    Summary Data Available: U.S. average indexes for both populations are available for about 305 consumer items and groups of items. In addition, over 100 of the indexes have been adjusted for seasonality. The indexes are monthly with some beginning in 1913. Semi-annual indexes have been calculated for about 100 items for comparison with semi-annual areas mentioned below. Semi-annual indexes are available from 1984 forward.

    Area indexes for both populations are available for 26 urban places. For each area, indexes are published for about 42 items and groups. The indexes are published monthly for three areas, bimonthly for eleven areas, and semi-annually for 12 urban areas.

    Regional indexes for both populations are available for four regions with about 55 items and groups per region. Beginning with January 1987, indexes are monthly, with some beginning as early as 1966. Semi-annual indexes have been calculated for about 42 items for comparison with semi-annual areas mentioned above.     City-size indexes for both populations are available for three size classes with about 55 items and groups per class. Beginning with January 1987, indexes are monthly and most begin in 1977.     Region/city-size indexes for both populations are available cross classified by region and city-size class. For each of 13 cross calculations, about 42 items and groups are available. Beginning with January 1987, indexes are monthly and most begin in 1977. Semi-annual indexes have been calculated for about 42 items in the 26 urban places for comparison with semi-annual areas.

    Frequency of Observations: U.S. city average indexes, some area indexes, and regional indexes, city-size indexes, and region/city-size indexes for both populations are monthly. Other area indexes for both populations are bimonthly or semi-annual.

    Annual Averages: Annual averages are available for all unadjusted series in the CW and CU.

    Base Periods: Most indexes have a base period of 1982-1984 = 100. Other indexes, mainly those which have been added to the CPI program with the 1998 revision, are based more recently. The base period value is 100.0, except for the "Purchasing Power" values (AAOR and SAOR) where the base period value is 1.000.

    Data Characteristics: Indexes are stored to one decimal place, except for the "Purchasing Power" values which are stored to three decimal places.

    The statistic shows the inflation rate in India from 1987 to 2024, with projections up until 2030. The inflation rate is calculated using the price increase of a defined product basket. This product basket contains products and services, on which the average consumer spends money throughout the year. India's inflation rate and economy Inflation is generally defined as the increase of prices of goods and services over a certain period of time, as opposed to deflation, which describes a decrease of these prices. Inflation is a significant economic indicator for a country. The inflation rate is the rate at which the general rise in the level of prices, goods and services in an economy occurs and how it affects the cost of living of those living in a particular country. It influences the interest rates paid on savings and mortgage rates but also has a bearing on levels of state pensions and benefits received. A 4 percent increase in the rate of inflation in 2011 for example would mean an individual would need to spend 4 percent more on the goods he was purchasing than he would have done in 2010. India’s inflation rate has been on the rise over the last decade. However, it has been decreasing slightly since 2010. India’s economy, however, has been doing quite well, with its GDP increasing steadily for years, and its national debt decreasing. The budget balance in relation to GDP is not looking too good, with the state deficit amounting to more than 9 percent of GDP.

    Abstract

    The 1996 Papua New Guinea household survey is designed to measure the living standards of a random sample of PNG households. As well as looking at the purchases, own-production, gift giving/receiving and sales activities of households over a short period (usually 14 days), the survey also collects information on education, health, nutrition, housing conditions and agricultural activities. The survey also collects information on community level access to services for education, health, transport and communication, and on the price levels in each community so that the cost of living can be measured.

    There are many uses of the data that the survey collects, but one main aim is for the results to help government, aid agencies and donors have a better picture of living conditions in all areas of PNG so that they can develop policies and projects that help to alleviate poverty. In addition, the survey will provide a socio-economic profile of Papua New Guinea, describing the access that the population has to agricultural, educational, health and transportation services, their participation in various economic activities, and household consumption patterns.

    The survey is nationwide and the same questionnaire is being used in all parts of the country, including the urban areas. This fact can be pointed out if households find that some of the questions are irrelevant for their own living circumstances: there are at least some Papua New Guinean households for which the questions will be relevant and it is only by asking everyone the same questions that living standards can be compared.

    Sampling procedure

    The Household Listing Form and Selection of the Sample Listing of households is the first job to be done after the team has settled in and completed the introductions to the community. Listing is best done by the whole team working together. This way they all get to know the community and its lay-out. However, if the census unit is too large this wastes too much time. So before beginning asks how many households there are, very roughly, in the census unit (noting that teams are supplied with the number of households that were there in the 1990 census). If the answer is 80 or more, divide the team into two and have each half-team work on one sector of the community/village. See the section below on what to do when the listing work is divided up.

    If the census unit is a "line-up point" that does not correspond to any single village or community the number of households will often exceed 200 and frequently they are also quite dispersed. In this case it is not practical to attempt to list the whole census unit, so a decision is made in advance to split the census unit into smaller areas (perhaps groupings of clans). First, a local informant must communicate the boundaries of the census unit and for natural or administrative sub-units with the larger census unit (such as hamlets; or canyons/valleys). The sub-units should be big enough to allow for the selection of a set of households (about 30 or more), but should not be so large that excessive transport time will be needed each day just to find the household. Once the subunit is defined, its boundaries should be clearly described. Then one of the smaller units is randomly selected and the procedures outlined above are then followed to complete the listing. Note: only one of the sub-units are listed, sample chosen, and interviews undertaken.

    The most important thing in the listing is to be sure that you list all the households and only the households belonging to the named village or census unit (or subset of the census unit if it is a line-up point). In rural areas, explain to village leaders at the beginning: "We have to write down all the households belonging to (Name) village." In case of doubt, always ask: "Does this household belong to (Name) village?" In the towns, the selected area is shown on a map. Check that the address where you are listing is within the same area shown.

    Also explain: "We only write down the name of the head of household. When we have the list of all the households, we will select 12 by chance, for interview."

    Procedure for Listing The listing team walks around in every part of the village, accompanied by a guide who is a member of the village. If possible, find a person who conducted the 1990 Census in this community or someone with similar knowledge of the community and ask them to be your guide. Make sure you go to all parts of the village, including outlying hamlets. In hamlets, on in any place far from the centre, always check: "Do these people belong to (Name) village?"

    In every part of the village, ask the guide about every house: "Who lives in this house? What is the name of the household head?" Note that you do not have to visit every household. At best, you just need to see each house but you do not need to go inside it or talk to anyone who lives there. Even the rule of seeing each house may be relaxed if there are far away household for which good information can be provided by the guide.

    Enter the names of household heads in the lines of the listing form. One line is used for each household. As the lines are numbered, the procedure gives a number to each household. When you come to the last house, check with the guide: "Are you sure we have seen all the houses in the village?"

    NOTE: It does not matter in what order you list the households as long as they are all listed. After the listing is complete, check that all lines are numbered consecutively with no gaps, from start to finish. The number on the last line should be exactly the number of households listed.

    Note: If the list is long (say more than 30 households) interviewer may encounter difficulties when looking for their selected household. One useful way to avoid this is to show the approximately the place in the list here certain landmarks come. This can be done by writing in the margin, CHURCH or STORE or whatever. You can also indicate where the lister started in a hamlet, for example.

    Sample Selection The sampling work is done by the supervisor. The first steps are done at the foot of the first page of the listing form. The steps to be taken are as follows:

    1. Fill in the numbers asked for at the foot of the last listing page, as follows:
    2. M: enter the total number of households listed (same as last household number shown).
    3. Interval L: calculate (M / 15) to the nearest whole number.
    4. R: This is a random number with 3-digit decimals between 0.000 and 0.999.
    5. MR: multiply M by R and round to the nearest whole number. (If decimal 0.5, round up).

    6. MR gives the 1st selection. (Exception: If MR=0, L gives the first selection.) Enter S against this line in the selection column of the list.

    7. Count down the list, beginning after the 1st selection, a distance of L lines to get the 2nd selection, then another L to get the 3rd, etc. When you come to the bottom of the list, jump back to the top as if the list were circular. Stop after the 15th selection. Mark the 13th, 14th, and 15th selections "RES" (for reserve). Mark the 1st - 12th selection "S" (for selection).

    The data compilation is a review of the state-aided housing construction development in the Federal Republic of Germany. Public housing aims at the supply of cost-saving housing space for a special group of people, specified by law. In addition to the creation of low-cost living space the acquisition of owner-occupied real estate has been funded according to the second housing act, so that real estate was possible for broad levels of the population. Using different forms of subsidies (construction cost and expense subsidy, interest subsidy), the rents could be reduced below a rent needed to cover the costs of the residence and thereby opened for the legitimate low-income groups (direct funding of the projected buildings or flats: object-based aid or object support). This law has been replaced in 2001 by the reform of the social housing law. It regulates the housing and other measures to support households with rental housing, including housing cooperatives and the creation of owner-occupied real estate property for households that cannot adequately supply themselves with living space on the housing market. The construction of social housing in Germany on the basis of the second housing act has been a form of state transfer payment. Additionally social housing policy up to the 90s with its comprehensive public investments has been an important element of the state’s impact on the economy and urban development policy. This social housing act has been replaced by the new social housing law in 2001, a housing policy support instrument of the federal government and the governments of the single German federal ‘Länder’ (federal states), which consists of actions on several levels: social housing assistance, housing benefits, property development, building society promotion, housing bonus, pension fund law, residential support programs of the KfW development bank "initiative to build cost-effective and quality conscious”.

    The statistics of the grants for social housing applies to housing construction projects that are funded by the public sector in social housing. In addition, the purchase of existing homes, which were funded by public sector, is included. The statistics on permits included until 1999 the following information: (1) Funded apartments and buildings (new building), without / with condominiums, (2) grant funds by purpose (promoting pathways), (3) financial ressources and (4) structure in the fully funded housing construction (building size, number of buildings, number of apartments, living space, estimated cost).

    Depending on the purpose of the granted funding between the following cases has been distinguished: Cases funded by means of the so called first funding procedure. These are cases of the traditional publicly funded social housing. Since 1966 further cases were funded by means of the so called second funding procedure. Funding of housing units in the frame of tax-advantaged housing construction for people with higher incomes are cases belonging to the second funding procedure. Finally, from 1989 cases funded by means of the agreed funding, the so called third funding procedure. Those building projects, in which between lender, grant donor, and builder an agreement is made on amount and use of the funding, covered by the third funding procedure.

    According to the act on the reform of the social housing law (2001) an annual statistics on the governmental granted funding is produced.

    In northern Ethiopia, Tigray continues to be blockaded. The 2021 crop yield was just 25-50 percent of what it would be in a regular year. At the beginning of March 2022, colleagues and friends in Tigray provided us with average statistics on the cost of living in Tigray (especially food). Farmlands had been poorly ploughed and planted lately or not at all due to military targeting of farming activities. Hence, every crop has gotten more costly. As a result of distress or desperation sales, the price of live animals has dropped dramatically. Coffee, firewood, gasoline, and transportation have also seen significant price rises. Extreme shortages of food and energy supplies drive up inflation, but the fact that there are very limited amounts of cash in circulation curbs it.
