    Description

    In late 1996, the Dept of Conservation (DOC) surveyed state and federal agencies about the county boundary coverage they used. As a result, DOC adopted the 1:24,000 (24K) scale U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) dataset (USGS source) for their Farmland Mapping and Monitoring Program (FMMP) but with several modifications. Detailed documentation of these changes is provided by FMMP and included in the lineage section of the metadata.A dataset was made available (approximately 2004) through CALFIRE - FRAP and the California Spatial Information Library (CaSIL), with additional updates throughout subsequent years. More recently, an effort was made to improve the coastal linework by using the previous interior linework from the 24k data, but replacing the coastal linework based on NOAA's ERMA coastal dataset (which used NAIP 2010). In this dataset, all bays (plus bay islands and constructed features) are merged into the mainland, and coastal features (such as islands and constructed features) are not included, with the exception of the Channel Islands which ARE included.This service represents the latest released version, and is updated when new versions are released. As of June, 2019 it represents cnty19_1.

    WARNING: This is a pre-release dataset and its fields names and data structures are subject to change. It should be considered pre-release until the end of 2024. Expected changes:

    • Metadata is missing or incomplete for some layers at this time and will be continuously improved.
    • We expect to update this layer roughly in line with CDTFA at some point, but will increase the update cadence over time as we are able to automate the final pieces of the process.
    This dataset is continuously updated as the source data from CDTFA is updated, as often as many times a month. If you require unchanging point-in-time data, export a copy for your own use rather than using the service directly in your applications.

    Purpose

    County and incorporated place (city) boundaries along with third party identifiers used to join in external data. Boundaries are from the authoritative source the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA), altered to show the counties as one polygon. This layer displays the city polygons on top of the County polygons so the area isn"t interrupted. The GEOID attribute information is added from the US Census. GEOID is based on merged State and County FIPS codes for the Counties. Abbreviations for Counties and Cities were added from Caltrans Division of Local Assistance (DLA) data. Place Type was populated with information extracted from the Census. Names and IDs from the US Board on Geographic Names (BGN), the authoritative source of place names as published in the Geographic Name Information System (GNIS), are attached as well. Finally, the coastline is used to separate coastal buffers from the land-based portions of jurisdictions. This feature layer is for public use.

    Working with Coastal Buffers
    The dataset you are currently viewing includes the coastal buffers for cities and counties that have them in the authoritative source data from CDTFA. In the versions where they are included, they remain as a second polygon on cities or counties that have them, with all the same identifiers, and a value in the COASTAL field indicating if it"s an ocean or a bay buffer. If you wish to have a single polygon per jurisdiction that includes the coastal buffers, you can run a Dissolve on the version that has the coastal buffers on all the fields except COASTAL, Area_SqMi, Shape_Area, and Shape_Length to get a version with the correct identifiers.

    Field and Abbreviation Definitions

    • COPRI: county number followed by the 3-digit city primary number used in the Board of Equalization"s 6-digit tax rate area numbering system
    • Place Name: CDTFA incorporated (city) or county name
    • County: CDTFA county name. For counties, this will be the name of the polygon itself. For cities, it is the name of the county the city polygon is within.
    • Legal Place Name: Board on Geographic Names authorized nomenclature for area names published in the Geographic Name Information System
    • GNIS_ID: The numeric identifier from the Board on Geographic Names that can be used to join these boundaries to other datasets utilizing this identifier.
    • GEOID: numeric geographic identifiers from the US Census Bureau Place Type: Board on Geographic Names authorized nomenclature for boundary type published in the Geographic Name Information System
    • Place Abbr: CalTrans Division of Local Assistance abbreviations of incorporated area names
    • CNTY Abbr: CalTrans Division of Local Assistance abbreviations of county names
    • Area_SqMi: The area of the administrative unit (city or county) in square miles, calculated in EPSG 3310 California Teale Albers.
    • COASTAL: Indicates if the polygon is a coastal buffer. Null for land polygons. Additional values include "ocean" and "bay".
    • GlobalID: While all of the layers we provide in this dataset include a GlobalID field with unique values, we do not recommend you make any use of it. The GlobalID field exists to support offline sync, but is not persistent, so data keyed to it will be orphaned at our next update. Use one of the other persistent identifiers, such as GNIS_ID or GEOID instead.

    Accuracy

    CDTFA"s source data notes the following about accuracy:

    City boundary changes and county boundary line adjustments filed with the Board of Equalization per Government Code 54900. This GIS layer contains the boundaries of the unincorporated county and incorporated cities within the state of California. The initial dataset was created in March of 2015 and was based on the State Board of Equalization tax rate area boundaries. As of April 1, 2024, the maintenance of this dataset is provided by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration for the purpose of determining sales and use tax rates. The boundaries are continuously being revised to align with aerial imagery when areas of conflict are discovered between the original boundary provided by the California State Board of Equalization and the boundary made publicly available by local, state, and federal government. Some differences may occur between actual recorded boundaries and the boundaries used for sales and use tax purposes. The boundaries in this map are representations of taxing jurisdictions for the purpose of determining sales and use tax rates and should not be used to determine precise city or county boundary line locations.     Description

    This digital map database represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial geologic units, and related data in the Fonts Point and Seventeen Palms 7.5’ quadrangles, California. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. This investigation delineates the geologic framework of an area of 75 square kilometers (km2) located west of the Salton Sea in southern California. The study area encompasses the south flank of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the eastern part of the Borrego Badlands. In this study area, regionally important stratigraphic and structural elements collectively inform the late Cenozoic geologic evolution of the Anza-Borrego sector of the Salton Trough province.     This feature service includes change areas for city boundaries and county line adjustments filed in accordance with Government Code 54900. The boundaries in this map are based on the State Board of Equalization's tax rate area maps for the assessment roll year specified in the COFILE field. Some differences may occur between actual recorded boundaries and boundary placement in the tax rate area GIS map.     Description

    The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. County subdivisions are the primary divisions of counties and their equivalent entities for the reporting of Census Bureau data. They include legally- recognized minor civil divisions (MCDs) and statistical census county divisions (CCDs), and unorganized territories. For the 2010 Census, the MCDs are the primary governmental and/or administrative divisions of counties in 29 States and Puerto Rico; Tennessee changed from having CCDs for Census 2000 to having MCDs for the 2010 Census. In MCD States where no MCD exists or is not defined, the Census Bureau creates statistical unorganized territories to complete coverage. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas are covered by county subdivisions. The boundaries of most legal MCDs are as of January 1, 2019, as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). The boundaries of all CCDs, delineated in 20 states, are those as reported as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the 2010 Census.

City boundary data are derived from pre-GIS tax maps, digitized at BOE and CDTFA, with adjustments made directly in GIS for new annexations, detachments, and corrections. Boundary accuracy within the dataset varies. While CDTFA strives to correctly include or exclude parcels from jurisdictions for accurate tax assessment, this dataset does not guarantee that a parcel is placed in the correct jurisdiction. When a parcel is in the correct jurisdiction, this dataset cannot guarantee accurate placement of boundary lines within or between parcels or rights of way. This dataset also provides no information on parcel boundaries. For exact jurisdictional or parcel boundary locations, please consult the county assessor's office and a licensed surveyor.CDTFA's data is used as the best available source because BOE and CDTFA receive information about changes in jurisdictions which otherwise need to be collected independently by an agency or company to compile into usable map boundaries. Boundary ProcessingThese data make a structural change from the source data. While the full boundaries provided by CDTFA include coastal buffers of varying sizes, many users need boundaries to end at the shoreline of the ocean or a bay. As a result, after examining existing city and county boundary layers, these datasets provide a coastline cut generally along the ocean facing coastline. For county boundaries in northern California, the cut runs near the Golden Gate Bridge, while for cities, we cut along the bay shoreline and into the edge of the Delta at the boundaries of Solano, Contra Costa, and Sacramento counties.In the services linked above, the versions that include the coastal buffers contain them as a second (or third) polygon for the city or county, with the value in the COASTAL field set to whether it"s a bay or ocean polygon. These can be processed back into a single polygon by dissolving on all the fields you wish to keep, since the attributes, other than the COASTAL field and geometry attributes (like areas) remain the same between the polygons for this purpose.SliversIn cases where a city or county"s boundary ends near a coastline, our coastline data may cross back and forth many times while roughly paralleling the jurisdiction"s boundary, resulting in many polygon slivers. We post-process the data to remove these slivers using a city/county boundary priority algorithm. That is, when the data run parallel to each other, we discard the coastline cut and keep the CDTFA-provided boundary, even if it extends into the ocean a small amount.     Complete accounting of all incorporated cities, including the boundary and name of each individual city. From 2009 to 2022 CAL FIRE maintained this dataset by processing and digitally capturing annexations sent by the state Board of Equalization (BOE). In 2022 CAL FIRE began sourcing data directly from BOE, in order to allow the authoritative department provide data directly.     The 1998 Dress Rehearsal was conducted as a prelude to the United States Census of Population and Housing, 2000, in the following locations: (1) Columbia, South Carolina, and surrounding areas, including the town of Irmo and the counties of Chester, Chesterfield, Darlington, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Marlboro, Newberry, Richland, and Union, (2) Sacramento, California, and (3) Menominee County, Wisconsin, including the Menominee American Indian Reservation. This collection contains map files showing various levels of geography (in the form of Census Tract Outline Maps, Voting District/State Legislative District Outline Maps, and County Block Maps), TIGER/Line digital files, and Corner Point files for the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal sites. The Corner Point data files contain the bounding latitude and longitude coordinates for each individual map sheet of the 1998 Dress Rehearsal Public Law (P.L.) 94-171 map products. These files include a sheet identifier, minimum and maximum longitude, minimum and maximum latitude, and the map scale (integer value) for each map sheet. The latitude and longitude coordinates are in decimal degrees and expressed as integer values with six implied decimal places. There is a separate Corner Point File for each of the three map types: County Block Map, Census Tract Outline Map, and Voting District/State Legislative District Outline Map. Each of the three map file types is provided in two formats: Portable Document Format (PDF), for viewing, and Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language (HP-GL) format, for plotting. The County Block Maps show the greatest detail and the most complete set of geographic information of all the maps. These large-scale maps depict the smallest geographic entities for which the Census Bureau presents data -- the census blocks -- by displaying the features that delineate them and the numbers that identify them. These maps show the boundaries, names, and codes for American Indian/Alaska Native areas, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, and, for this series, the geographic entities that the states delineated in Phase 2, Voting District Project, of the Redistricting Data Program. The HP-GL version of the County Block Maps is broken down into index maps and map sheets. The map sheets cover a small area, and the index maps are composed of multiple map sheets, showing the entire area. The intent of the County Block Map series is to provide a map for each county on the smallest possible number of map sheets at the maximum practical scale, dependent on the area size of the county and the density of the block pattern. The latter affects the display of block numbers and feature identifiers. The Census Tract Outline Maps show the boundaries and numbers of census tracts, and name the features underlying the boundaries. These maps also show the boundaries and names of counties, county subdivisions, and places. They identify census tracts in relation to governmental unit boundaries. The mapping unit is the county. These large-format maps are produced to support the P.L. 94-171 program and all other 1998 Dress Rehearsal data tabulations. The Voting District/State Legislative District Outline Maps show the boundaries and codes for voting districts as delineated by the states in Phase 2, Voting District Project, of the Redistricting Data Program. The features underlying the voting district boundaries are shown, as well as the names of these features. Additionally, for states that submit the information, these maps show the boundaries and codes for state legislative districts and their underlying features. These maps also show the boundaries of and names of American Indian/Alaska Native areas, counties, county subdivisions, and places. The scale of the district maps is optimized to keep the number of map sheets for each area to a minimum, but the scale and number of map sheets will vary by the area size of the county and the voting districts and state legislative districts delineated by the states. The Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal TIGER/Line Files consist of line segments representing physical features and governmental and statistical boundaries. The files contain information distributed over a series of record types for the spatial objects of a county.     This digital dataset is comprised of three separate data files that contain total dissolved solids, well construction, and well identifying information for 3,546 water wells used to map salinity in and around 31 southern and central California oil fields. Salinity mapping was done for 27 fields located in the southern San Joaquin Valley of Kern County (North Belridge, South Belridge, Canfield Ranch, North Coles Levee, South Coles Levee, Cymric, Edison, Elk Hills, Fruitvale, Greely, Jasmin, Kern Bluff, Kern Front, Kern River, Lost Hills, Mount Poso, Mountain View, Poso Creek, Rio Bravo, Rosedale, Rosedale Ranch, Round Mountain, San Emidio Nose, Tejon, Ten Section, Wheeler Ridge, and Yowlumne), 3 fields in the LA Basin of Los Angeles County (Montebello, Santa Fe Springs, and Wilmington), and 1 field in the central coast area of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties (Santa Maria Valley). Unlike petroleum wells, water wells both within and adjacent to oil fields of interest were used for salinity mapping. Water wells within an area (buffer) of 2-miles from the administrative field boundaries, with the exception of the Wilmington oil field with a buffer of 1-mile, were used for salinity mapping. Water wells located within overlapping buffer areas of adjacent oil fields were assigned to multiple fields for the purpose of being able to map salinity on a field-by-field basis. The dataset includes total dissolved solids (TDS) analyses from 1927 to 2016. Many of the analyses represent TDS concentrations that were calculated, as part of the salinity mapping, from specific conductance (SC) in lieu of reported TDS concentrations. Approximately 30 percent of the mapped water wells are wholly or partially derived from SC. In addition, approximately 50 percent of the water wells have TDS or SC analyses from more than one unique sample date. For wells having multiple analyses TDS represents the median value for the entire period of record, irrespective of whether it is from reported, calculated, or a combination of both TDS types. This dataset also includes ancillary data in the form of bottom perforation depth, well depth, or hole depth, land-surface elevation at the well head, and well location and identifier information. Bottom perforation depth was missing for about 65 percent of all water wells used for salinity mapping and were assigned a alternative value for plotting purposes. Where available, well depth or hole depth were used in lieu of bottom perforation depth. For water wells lacking bottom perforation, well depth, or hole depth (40 percent), the bottom perforation was estimated based on screen length when available (5 percent), or when the median bottom perforation or median well depth for all wells associated with an individual field is provided as an approximation for the purpose of vertical plotting (35 percent). Summary data about each well used for salinity mapping is contained in the file called Water_Wells_Summary_Data. Detailed information about all individual TDS values including those used for determining median TDS values, are contained in the file called Water_Wells_All_Data. Data used for the development of linear regression equations for calculating TDS from specific conductance in lieu of reported TDS values are contained in the file called Water_Wells_Regress_Data.

    • We expect to update this layer roughly in line with CDTFA at some point, but will increase the update cadence over time as we are able to automate the final pieces of the process.
    This dataset is continuously updated as the source data from CDTFA is updated, as often as many times a month. If you require unchanging point-in-time data, export a copy for your own use rather than using the service directly in your applications.

    Purpose

    County and incorporated place (city) boundaries along with third party identifiers used to join in external data. Boundaries are from the authoritative source the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA), altered to show the counties as one polygon. This layer displays the city polygons on top of the County polygons so the area isn"t interrupted. The GEOID attribute information is added from the US Census. GEOID is based on merged State and County FIPS codes for the Counties. Abbreviations for Counties and Cities were added from Caltrans Division of Local Assistance (DLA) data. Place Type was populated with information extracted from the Census. Names and IDs from the US Board on Geographic Names (BGN), the authoritative source of place names as published in the Geographic Name Information System (GNIS), are attached as well. Finally, coastal buffers are removed, leaving the land-based portions of jurisdictions. This feature layer is for public use.

    The dataset you are currently viewing includes the coastal buffers for cities and counties that have them in the authoritative source data from CDTFA. In the versions where they are included, they remain as a second polygon on cities or counties that have them, with all the same identifiers, and a value in the COASTAL field indicating if it"s an ocean or a bay buffer. If you wish to have a single polygon per jurisdiction that includes the coastal buffers, you can run a Dissolve on the version that has the coastal buffers on all the fields except COASTAL, Area_SqMi, Shape_Area, and Shape_Length to get a version with the correct identifiers.

    Accuracy

    CDTFA"s source data notes the following about accuracy:

    City boundary changes and county boundary line adjustments filed with the Board of Equalization per Government Code 54900. This GIS layer contains the boundaries of the unincorporated county and incorporated cities within the state of California. The initial dataset was created in March of 2015 and was based on the State Board of Equalization tax rate area boundaries. As of April 1, 2024, the maintenance of this dataset is provided by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration for the purpose of determining sales and use tax rates. The boundaries are continuously being revised to align with aerial imagery when areas of conflict are discovered between the original boundary provided by the California State Board of Equalization and the boundary made publicly available by local, state, and federal government. Some differences may occur between actual recorded boundaries and the boundaries used for sales and use tax purposes. The boundaries in this map are representations of taxing jurisdictions for the purpose of determining sales and use tax rates and should not be used to determine precise city or county boundary line locations.     Description

    In 2012, the CPUC ordered the development of a statewide map that is designed specifically for the purpose of identifying areas where there is an increased risk for utility associated wildfires. The development of the CPUC -sponsored fire-threat map, herein "CPUC Fire-Threat Map," started in R.08-11-005 and continued in R.15-05-006.

    A multistep process was used to develop the statewide CPUC Fire-Threat Map. The first step was to develop Fire Map 1 (FM 1), an agnostic map which depicts areas of California where there is an elevated hazard for the ignition and rapid spread of powerline fires due to strong winds, abundant dry vegetation, and other environmental conditions. These are the environmental conditions associated with the catastrophic powerline fires that burned 334 square miles of Southern California in October 2007. FM 1 was developed by CAL FIRE and adopted by the CPUC in Decision 16-05-036.

    FM 1 served as the foundation for the development of the final CPUC Fire-Threat Map. The CPUC Fire-Threat Map delineates, in part, the boundaries of a new High Fire-Threat District (HFTD) where utility infrastructure and operations will be subject to stricter fire‑safety regulations. Importantly, the CPUC Fire-Threat Map (1) incorporates the fire hazards associated with historical powerline wildfires besides the October 2007 fires in Southern California (e.g., the Butte Fire that burned 71,000 acres in Amador and Calaveras Counties in September 2015), and (2) ranks fire-threat areas based on the risks that utility-associated wildfires pose to people and property.

    Primary responsibility for the development of the CPUC Fire-Threat Map was delegated to a group of utility mapping experts known as the Peer Development Panel (PDP), with oversight from a team of independent experts known as the Independent Review Team (IRT). The members of the IRT were selected by CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE served as the Chair of the IRT. The development of CPUC Fire-Threat Map includes input from many stakeholders, including investor-owned and publicly owned electric utilities, communications infrastructure providers, public interest groups, and local public safety agencies.

    The PDP served a draft statewide CPUC Fire-Threat Map on July 31, 2017, which was subsequently reviewed by the IRT. On October 2 and October 5, 2017, the PDP filed an Initial CPUC Fire-Threat Map that reflected the results of the IRT's review through September 25, 2017. The final IRT-approved CPUC Fire-Threat Map was filed on November 17, 2017. On November 21, 2017, SED filed on behalf of the IRT a summary report detailing the production of the CPUC Fire-Threat Map(referenced at the time as Fire Map 2). Interested parties were provided opportunity to submit alternate maps, written comments on the IRT-approved map and alternate maps (if any), and motions for Evidentiary Hearings. No motions for Evidentiary Hearings or alternate map proposals were received. As such, on January 19, 2018 the CPUC adopted, via Safety and Enforcement Division's (SED) disposition of a Tier 1 Advice Letter, the final CPUC Fire-Threat Map.

    Description

    The Yucaipa 7.5' quadrangle is located at the southeastern margin of the San Bernardino Basin, an extensional region situated within a right-step-over zone between the San Jacinto and San Andreas Fault zones. The quadrangle is traversed by several faults of the San Andreas system, including (from oldest to youngest) the Banning Fault and the Wilson Creek, Mission Creek, Mill Creek, and San Bernardino Strands of the San Andreas Fault. The Mill Creek Strand of the San Andreas Fault is the easternmost strand of the San Andreas in the Yucaipa quadrangle. It separates granitic and metamorphic rocks of the San Bernardino Mountains block from a thin slice of similar rocks on Yucaipa Ridge, and thus has only a small amount of strike-slip displacement. The Wilson Creek Strand traverses Yucaipa Ridge and converges toward the Mlll Creek Strand in the Santa Ana river Canyon. The fault has juxtaposed an igneous and metamorphic complex (Wilson Creek block) and overlying nonmarine sedimentary rocks (Mill Creek Formation of Gibson, 1971) against rocks of San Bernardino Mountains-type, and thus has significant strike-slip displacement. The Mission Creek Strand is inferred to lie beneath Quaternary surficial deposits along the southwestern base of the San Bernardino Mountains. This fault is the major strand of the San Andreas Fault zone, and has juxtaposed crystalline rocks of San Gabriel Mountains-type (including Pelona Schist overlain by the Vincent Thrust and associated upper-plate crystalline rocks) against the Wilson Creek block and the San Bernardino Mountains. The San Bernardino Strand defines the modern trace of the San Andreas Fault. The strand forms primary fault features in all but the youngest Quaternary surficial units, and is thought to have evolved in the last 125,000 years or so based on regional fault relations. Complications within the San Andreas Fault system over the last several hundred thousand years have created a landscape setting in which Quaternary surficial materials of the Yucaipa quadrangle have accumulated. Crustal extension throughout the San Bernardino Basin region led to uplift of the Crafton Hills block and down-dropping of the Yucaipa Valley region on faults of the Crafton Hills and Chicken Hill complex. Subsequent middle and late Quaternary streamflows deposited several generations of axial-valley and alluvial-fan sediment in the down-dropped lowlands. These deposits and the older San Timoteo beds they overlie record the history of Quaternary fault movements, and form reservoirs for ground water in the Yucaipa quadrangle. Digital Data: The geologic database of the Yucaipa 1:24,000-scale 7.5' quadrangle, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, California, was prepared by the Southern California Areal Mapping Project (SCAMP), a regional geologic-mapping project sponsored jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey.     Description

    The California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) contracted with the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) and Aerial Information Systems (AIS) to produce an alliance-level, vegetation classification and map of Western Riverside County, California. The resulting classification and map products will be used to help establish a monitoring basis for the vegetation and habitats of the Western Riverside County Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP). The plan aims to conserve over 500,000 acres of land out of the 1.26 million acre total. This area is the largest MSHCP ever attempted and is an integral piece of the network of Southern California Habitat Conservation Plans and Natural Community Conservation Planning (Dudek 2001, Dudek 2003). Riverside County is one of the fastest growing counties in California, as well as one of the most biodiverse counties in the United States. A wide array of habitats are found within the non-developed lands in Western Riverside County, including coastal sage scrub, vernal pools, montane coniferous forest, chaparral, foothill woodland, annual grassland, and desert. In the CNPS contract, vegetation resources were assessed quantitatively through field surveys, data analysis, and final vegetation classification. Field survey data were analyzed statistically to come up with a floristically-based classification. Each vegetation type sampled was classified according to the National Vegetation Classification System to the alliance level (and association level if possible). The vegetation alliances were described floristically and environmentally in standard descriptions, and a final key was produced to differentiate among 101 alliances, 169 associations, and 3 unique stands (for final report, see http://maps.dfg.ca.gov/references/ds170 ).     Description

    This geologic map database for the El Mirage Lake area describes geologic materials for the dry lake, parts of the adjacent Shadow Mountains and Adobe Mountain, and much of the piedmont extending south from the lake upward toward the San Gabriel Mountains. This area lies within the western Mojave Desert of San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties, southern California. The area is traversed by a few paved highways that service the community of El Mirage, and by numerous dirt roads that lead to outlying properties. An off-highway vehicle area established by the Bureau of Land Management encompasses the dry lake and much of the land north and east of the lake. The physiography of the area consists of the dry lake, flanking mud and sand flats and alluvial piedmonts, and a few sharp craggy mountains. This digital geologic map database, intended for use at 1:24,000- scale, describes and portrays the rock units and surficial deposits of the El Mirage Lake area. It was prepared as part of a water-resource assessments of the area, describing and interpreting surface geology that provides information to help understand distribution and extent of deeper groundwater-bearing units. The area mapped covers the Shadow Mountains SE and parts of the Shadow Mountains, Adobe Mountain, and El Mirage 7.5-minute quadrangles. The map database includes detailed geology of surface and bedrock deposits, which represent a significant update from previous bedrock geologic maps by Dibblee (1960) and Troxel and Gunderson (1970), and the surficial geologic map of Ponti and Burke (1980); it incorporates a fringe of the detailed bedrock mapping in the Shadow Mountains by Martin (1992).

    Description

    In 2012, the CPUC ordered the development of a statewide map that is designed specifically for the purpose of identifying areas where there is an increased risk for utility associated wildfires. The development of the CPUC -sponsored fire-threat map, herein "CPUC Fire-Threat Map," started in R.08-11-005 and continued in R.15-05-006.

    A multistep process was used to develop the statewide CPUC Fire-Threat Map. The first step was to develop Fire Map 1 (FM 1), an agnostic map which depicts areas of California where there is an elevated hazard for the ignition and rapid spread of powerline fires due to strong winds, abundant dry vegetation, and other environmental conditions. These are the environmental conditions associated with the catastrophic powerline fires that burned 334 square miles of Southern California in October 2007. FM 1 was developed by CAL FIRE and adopted by the CPUC in Decision 16-05-036.

    FM 1 served as the foundation for the development of the final CPUC Fire-Threat Map. The CPUC Fire-Threat Map delineates, in part, the boundaries of a new High Fire-Threat District (HFTD) where utility infrastructure and operations will be subject to stricter fire‑safety regulations. Importantly, the CPUC Fire-Threat Map (1) incorporates the fire hazards associated with historical powerline wildfires besides the October 2007 fires in Southern California (e.g., the Butte Fire that burned 71,000 acres in Amador and Calaveras Counties in September 2015), and (2) ranks fire-threat areas based on the risks that utility-associated wildfires pose to people and property.

    Primary responsibility for the development of the CPUC Fire-Threat Map was delegated to a group of utility mapping experts known as the Peer Development Panel (PDP), with oversight from a team of independent experts known as the Independent Review Team (IRT). The members of the IRT were selected by CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE served as the Chair of the IRT. The development of CPUC Fire-Threat Map includes input from many stakeholders, including investor-owned and publicly owned electric utilities, communications infrastructure providers, public interest groups, and local public safety agencies.

    The PDP served a draft statewide CPUC Fire-Threat Map on July 31, 2017, which was subsequently reviewed by the IRT. On October 2 and October 5, 2017, the PDP filed an Initial CPUC Fire-Threat Map that reflected the results of the IRT's review through September 25, 2017. The final IRT-approved CPUC Fire-Threat Map was filed on November 17, 2017. On November 21, 2017, SED filed on behalf of the IRT a summary report detailing the production of the CPUC Fire-Threat Map(referenced at the time as Fire Map 2). Interested parties were provided opportunity to submit alternate maps, written comments on the IRT-approved map and alternate maps (if any), and motions for Evidentiary Hearings. No motions for Evidentiary Hearings or alternate map proposals were received. As such, on January 19, 2018 the CPUC adopted, via Safety and Enforcement Division's (SED) disposition of a Tier 1 Advice Letter, the final CPUC Fire-Threat Map.

    The ultimate goal of this project is to create an updated fine‐scale vegetation map for about 58,000 acres of Orange County, consisting of the 37,000‐acre Orange County Central and Coastal Subregions Natural Community Conservation Plan (NCCP)/Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) Habitat Reserve System; approximately 9,500 acres of associated NCCP/HCP Special Linkages, Existing Use Areas, and Non‐Reserve Open Space; and approximately 11,000 acres of adjoining conserved open space (study area). The project consisted of three phases.Phase 1: To update vegetation mapping, the Natural Reserve of Orange County (NROC) proposes to use Manual of California Vegetation (MCV) methods (2009), which will be implemented in two stages: Stage 1 – Development of a vegetation classification system for the Central and Coastal Subregions of Orange County that is consistent with the MCV. Stage 2 – Application of the vegetation classification system to create a vegetation map through photointerpretation of available aerial imagery and ground reconnaissance. The MCV methods were developed by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program in collaboration with the California Native Plant Society (CNPS). This approach relies on the collection of quantifiable environmental data to identify and classify biological associations that repeat across the landscape. For areas where documentation is lacking to effectively define all of the vegetation patterns found in California, CDFG and CNPS developed the Vegetation Rapid Assessment Protocol. This protocol guides data collection and analysis to refine vegetation classifications that are consistent with CDFG and MCV standards. Based on an earlier classification by Gray and Bramlet (1992), Orange County is expected to have vegetation types not yet described in the MCV. Using the MCV approach, Rapid Assessment (RA) data was collected throughout the study area and analyzed to characterize these new vegetation types or show concurrence with existing MCV types.Phase 2: Aerial Information Systems, Inc. (AIS) was contracted by the Nature Reserve of Orange County (NROC) to create an updated fine-scale regional vegetation map consistent with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) classification methodology and mapping standards. The mapping area covers approximately 86,000 acres of open space and adjacent urban and agricultural lands including habitat located in both the Central and Coastal Subregions of Orange County. The map was prepared over a baseline digital image created in 2012 by the US Department of Agriculture – Farm Service Agency’s National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP). Vegetation units were mapped using the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS) to the Alliance level as depicted in the second edition of the Manual of California Vegetation (MCV2). One of the most important data layers used to guide the conservation planning process for the 1996 Orange County Central & Coastal Subregion Natural Community Conservation Plan/Habitat Conservation Plan (NCCP/HCP) was the regional vegetation map created in the early 1990s by Dave Bramlett & Jones & Stokes Associates, Inc. (Jones & Stokes Associates, Inc. 1993). Up until now, this same map continues to be used to direct monitoring and management efforts in the NCCP/HCP Habitat Reserve. An updated map is necessary in order to address changes in vegetation makeup due to widespread and multiple burns in the mapping area, urban expansion, and broadly occurring vegetation succession that has occurred over the past 20 years since the original map was created. This update is further necessary in order to conform to the current NVCS, which is supported by the extensive acquisition of ground based field data and subsequent analysis that has ensued in those same 20 years over the region and adjacent similar habitats in the coastal and mountain foothills of Southern California. Vegetative and cartographic comparisons between the newly created 2012 image-based map and the original 1990s era vegetation map are documented in a separate report produced by the California Native Plant Society at the end of 2014.Phase 3: The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Vegetation Program conducted an independent accuracy assessment of a new vegetation map completed for the natural lands of Orange County in collaboration with Aerial Information Systems (AIS), the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), and the Nature Reserve of Orange County (NROC). This report provides a summary of the accuracy assessment allocation, field sampling methods, and analysis results; it also provides an in-depth crosswalk and comparison between the new map and the existing 1992 vegetation map. California state standards (CDFW 2007) require that a vegetation map should achieve an overall accuracy of 80%. After final scoring, the new Orange County vegetation map received an overall user’s accuracy of 87%. The new fine-scale vegetation map and supporting field survey data provide baseline information for long-term land management and conservation within the remaining natural lands of Orange County.Data made available in the OC Data Portal in partnership with UCI Libraries.     description: The Redlands 7.5' quadrangle is located in the southeastern margin of the San Bernardino Basin, an extensional region situated in a right-step-over zone within the San Andreas Fault system. The quadrangle is traversed by several important fault zones, including: (1) northwest-trending right-lateral strike-slip faults of the San Andreas system (Banning Fault, the Mission Creek and San Bernardino Strands of the San Andreas Fault, the San Jacinto Fault); (2) northeast-trending normal dip-slip faults that have downdropped the San Bernardino Basin; (3) east-trending contractional faults of the San Timoteo Canyon Fault zone. Some of these faults bound distinctive packages of crystalline basement rock. Northwest of the Mission Creek Strand of the San Andreas Fault lies an igneous and metamorphic complex characterized by textural and compositional heterogeneity. This terrane, the Wilson Creek block, is strongly gneissose but includes foliated to massive granitoid rocks intimately intermingled with the gneisses. Thin slices of the gneissose complex have been displaced a few kilometers by the San Bernardino Strand of the San Andreas, the modern trace of the San Andreas Fault in the Redlands quadrangle and elsewhere along the southwest margin of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Mission Creek strand is inferred to lie beneath Quaternary surficial deposits along the southwestern base of the San Bernardino Mountains. This fault is the major strand of the San Andreas Fault zone, has about 100 km of right-slip, and has juxtaposed distinctive crystalline rocks of San Gabriel Mountains-type against the Wilson Creek block and the San Bernardino Mountains. The Banning Fault probably demarcates an important boundary between rocks of San Gabriel Mountains-type to the north and rocks of Peninsular Ranges-type to the south. This hypothesis is difficult to test because outcrops of the two terranes are several miles apart and between them the trace of the Banning Fault must be inferred beneath surficial deposits and beneath the San Timoteo beds of Frick (1921). The rocks of Peninsular Range-type are very different from those of San Gabriel Mountains-type, and consist of massive to foliated granitoids of monzogranitic, granodioritic, and tonalitic composition. Much of the Redlands quadrangle is covered with unconsolidated Quaternary surficial deposits of sand and gravel that have accumulated over the last 600,000 years or so. These are thickest on the modern and ancestral flood plains of the Santa Ana River. In the south part of the quadrangle within the San Timoteo and Reche Canyon drainage systems, Quaternary surficial deposits are less extensive and have distribution patterns determined by displacements on the San Timoteo Canyon Fault zone (reverse faulting) and the San Jacinto Fault (strike-slip faulting). In this region, folded and faulted deposits of the San Timoteo beds of Frick, (1921) formed upwarps and downwarps that influenced the evolution of the landscape and its sedimentary deposits.
