Among countries in Africa, Lesotho presented the highest share of young people neither in employment nor in education and training (NEET) as of 2020. According to the source estimates, roughly 44 percent of individuals aged 15-24 years in Lesotho were disengaged from both education and the labor market. The share reached nearly 40 percent in Botswana, Chad, Eswatini, and Benin. On the other hand, Rwanda registered the lowest rate, at 6.3 percent, followed by Madagascar and Burundi, each with a share of around seven percent of NEET youth.

The share of youth in Norway between 15 and 29 years who were neither in education, employment, nor training (NEET) was constantly higher among foreign-born youth than among Norwegian-born youth between 2012 and 2022. However, the share of foreigners who were NEET dropped sharply from 2015 to 2017, from nearly 14 percent to nine percent. Since, the NEET rate among foreign-born youth in the country has been around 10 percent, compared to around six percent of Norwegian youth.
