As of 2020, South Africa had 407 airports, making it the leading country in Africa in terms of airport ownership. The nation ranked 20th globally. Moreover, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya followed with a total of 198 and 197 airports, respectively.

During the period from 2013 to 2019, Germany was the country with the highest number of airports in Europe. Among a total of 539 airports in the country, 318 had paved runways, while 221 had unpaved runways.

As of 2023, there were 17 international airports in Indonesia, the highest number of international airports among the selected Southeast Asian countries. Indonesia also had the biggest number of domestic airports in ASEAN countries that year.

In 2023, the number of domestic airports in Indonesia amounted to 233, the highest number among Southeast Asian countries. In comparison, Cambodia had five domestic airports as of 2023. Indonesia also had the highest number of international airports in ASEAN countries that year.

The United States had the largest commercial air travel market in 2021, with just over 666 million passengers boarding planes registered to American and international air carriers. The next largest market was China, with more than 440 million passengers, while the Eurozone ranked in third place, with almost 252 million passengers.

Erasing two decades of growth in global air travel Regardless of how passenger numbers are measured, global air travel increased rapidly over the last decade. However, this was not the case in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic erased two decades of global passenger traffic growth, cutting the number of air passengers to only 1.8 billion and the number of flights globally to 16.9 million. Looking at this period, the Middle East region was affected the most, with seat capacity down 63 percent compared to 2019.

With nearly 26.7 million passengers in 2023, the leading airport in the Nordic countries was Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. In general, the main airports of the Nordic capital cities had the highest volume of passenger traffic. Only one airport from Finland and Iceland each is among the leading 15 Nordic airports. Ranking is topped by Norwegian and Danish airports The overall ranking is dominated by Norwegian and Swedish airports. The leading Danish airport was Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. Together with the other two Danish airports on the list, Billund and Aalborg, the passenger number amounted to roughly 32.04 million in 2023. Next to Oslo Airport, five other Norwegian airports ranked among the fifteen busiest airports in the Nordics. This included Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Tromsø, and Sandefjord Torp. In total, the Norwegian airports in this ranking accounted for 43.11 million passengers. COVID-19 pandemic decimates airport passenger numbers The ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including lockdowns and travel restrictions, meant that passenger numbers at Nordic airports remained low in 2021. The leading airport in the Nordics, Oslo Airport, only had approximately a third of the passengers in 2021 that it had pre-pandemic in 2019. The number of passengers in Keflavík Airport in Iceland, which operates as a transatlantic aviation hub, began to recover in 2021, after falling from 9.8 million passengers in 2019 to 1.4 million passengers in 2020. However, the number of passengers at Keflavík Airport was still more than two thirds below that of 2019.
