Data Processing Notes: Boundaries come from the US Census Bureau TIGER geodatabases. Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census Bureau. These are Census Bureau boundaries with water and/or coastlines clipped for cartographic purposes. For census tracts, the water cutouts are derived from a subset of the 2010 AWATER (Area Water) boundaries offered by TIGER. For state and county boundaries, the water and coastlines are derived from the coastlines of the 500k TIGER Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles. The original AWATER and ALAND fields are still available as attributes within the data table (units are square meters). The States layer contains 56 records - all US states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Island Areas Blank values represent industries where there either were no businesses in that industry and that geography OR industries where the data had to be withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual companies. Users should visit data.census.gov or Census Business Builder for more details on these withheld records.

    Description

    ZIP Code Business Patterns (ZBP)

County Business Patterns (CBP) is an annual series that provides subnational economic data by industry. This series includes the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll. This data is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for other statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Businesses use the data for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, setting sales quotas, and developing budgets. Government agencies use the data for administration and planning.

County Business Patterns (CBP) is an annual series that provides economic data by industry at the U.S., State, County and Metropolitan Area levels. This series includes the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll. CBP provides statistics for businesses with paid employees for the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas. Census Bureau staff identified a processing error that affects selected data from the 2014 County Business Patterns (CBP). As a result, we suppressed 2014 employment and payroll totals in the Health Care and Social Assistance sector (Sector 62) for the following geographies: U.S.; Michigan; Battle Creek, MI metro area; Calhoun County, MI; and the 3rd congressional district of Michigan. This processing error did not affect other sectors. While suppressed values can be derived by subtraction, we do not recommend using the derived values in any analyses. The Census Bureau plans to release revised statistics at a later date.

    Description

This dataset was created from County Business Pattern data ranging from 1962 to 1969 excluding data from 1963. The investigators of these data did their best to infer structure and meaning from the individual datasets to create this dataset. The 1962 data do not contain all counties. The investigators observed that multiple counties were combined together into single observations for the states with the most counties, so as to save storage space.

This layer shows data on the number of establishments, total employment during the week of March 12th 2021, and total annual payroll for the 2-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Sector codes (excluding 11 and 99) and for NAICS 00, All Sectors (including 11 and 99). This is shown by county and state boundaries. This program is updated annually to contain the most currently released CBP data, and contains estimates and measure of reliability. There are also additional calculated attributes related to this topic, which can be mapped or used within analysis. Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census Bureau. The geographic reference for CBP 2021 is the 2017 vintage. The States layer contains 56 records - all US states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico and Island Areas. Blank values represent industries where there either were no businesses in that industry and that geography OR industries where the data had to be withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual companies. Users should refer to the Methodology page on the County Business Patterns website for additional information.Data shown in thousands of dollars are indicated by '($1000)' in the field aliasing. Average and Totals include NAICS 11 and 99.

    Description

County Business Patterns provides data covering most of the economic divisions of the economy, i.e., agricultural services, mining, construction, manufacturing, transportation, public utilities, wholesale trade, retail trade, finance, insurance, real estate, and services. Summary data are provided on number of employees for the mid-March pay period, first-quarter total payroll, total annual payroll, number of establishments, and the number of establishments by employment-size class. Data are tabulated by detailed industry based on the 1987 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) manual. The file provides data on total number of establishments, mid-March employment, first quarter and annual payroll, and number of establishments by employment-size classes. Whereas data in County Business Patterns reports are not shown for SIC's with fewer than 50 employees in a given area, there is no such restriction on the data files. This series excludes governmental establishments classified in the covered industries except for liquor stores and wholesale liquor establishments operated by State and local governments. All government hospitals are included beginning with 1989 data. Note to Users: This CD is part of a collection located in the Data Archive of the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection is located in Room 10, Manning Hall. Users may check out the CDs, subscribing to the honor system. Items can be checked out for a period of two weeks. Loan forms are located adjacent to the collection.
