    Description

This resource is a member of a series. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) System (MTS). The MTS represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. County subdivisions are the primary divisions of counties and equivalent entities for the reporting of Census Bureau data. They include legally-recognized minor civil divisions (MCDs) and statistical census county divisions (CCDs), and unorganized territories. In MCD states where no MCD exists or is not defined, the Census Bureau creates statistical unorganized territories to complete coverage. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas are covered by county subdivisions. The boundaries of most legal MCDs are as of January 1, 2024, as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). The boundaries of all CCDs are those as reported as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the 2020 Census.

    Description

This is the MnDOT user-accepted version of the state boundary. It is a composite of all of the county boundaries, as accepted by MnDOT for general purpose use. This boundary represents a pre-1947 state boundary as it does not recognize the 1947 states compact signed between Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota, which defined the boundary/boundaries within Lake Superior. This boundary measures approximately 84,365 square miles, and excludes the portion of Lake Superior that is legally defined as part of the state of Minnesota.

This medium-scale (nominally 1:24,000) dataset represents the boundaries of Cities in Minnesota. It is derived from CTU dataset where the feature type is a City (does not include townships or unorganized territories). The Minnesota Geospatial Information Office created the initial CTU dataset by updating a municipal boundary file maintained by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Update information was gathered primarily from annexation and detachment records maintained by the Office of Administrative Hearings, Municipal Boundary Adjustment Unit. MnDOT has maintained the file since 2014.

Jurisdictional crosswalk is a combination of data from federal sources and legacy MnDOT data. It creates a crosswalk or translation between various ID systems for city, township, and unorganized territories within the State of Minnesota.

    Description

There are 87 counties in Minnesota and two county datasets have existed on the commons for many years. One was developed and maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MnDNR), “County Boundaries, Minnesota”, and another by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), “County Boundaries in Minnesota”. For counties encompassing the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, the Metropolitan Council also maintains the “Counties and Cities & Townships 2020, Twin Cities Metropolitan Area” dataset. Thus, the Minnesota State Agency GIS Collaborative’s Authoritative Data Workgroup identified the need to develop a single, authoritative, Minnesota County Dataset.

This dataset represents the standard Minnesota state county boundaries and is intended as a general reference layer. It was developed by the Minnesota Geospatial Informational Office (MnGeo) using existing county boundary datasets from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Metropolitan Council, and International Boundary Commission (United States and Canada). Various county survey records were used to verify and resolve topologic conflicts.
