    Description

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Ohio North Stateplane projection and coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at scales of 1:6000 and 1:12,000.

Coordinates were digitized from U. S. Geological Survey 7.5' topographic maps (paper copies) using a digitizing program developed in-house by the Geological Survey Bureau, Iowa DNR. The digitizing tablet accuracy was 1/50 inch. Section lines from individual quads were combined and edited using PC Arc/Info.

This GIS coverage represents an approximation of the public drainage district boundaries in Iowa. It also represents the infrastructure of the drainage districts, which includes tiles, and ditches. This information was digitized mainly from maps provided by county governments, usually the drainage clerk in that county. The accuracy of this coverage varies widely and should be used mainly as a guide, not exact ground conditions or locations.

This coverage contains points that represent populated places, ie. cities, towns, villages or any other named place where people live. The coverage was developed from the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database for Iowa. There were many errors in the original GNIS data, including missing points or mislocated points. The GNIS points were compared to two reference sources: USGS 100k scale county maps and Iowa DOT county highway maps. Mislocated and missing point were fixed and each town was designated as having been verified from one or the other reference sources or both. Some GNIS points were not verified from either source and are so designated (use these with caution).

This dataset provides the geographic names data for Iowa. All names data products are extracted from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the Federal Government's repository of official geographic names. The GNIS contains the federally recognized name of each feature and defines its location by State, county, USGS topographic map, and geographic coordinates. GNIS also lists variant names, which are non-official names by which a feature is or was known. Other attributes include unique Feature ID and feature class. Feature classes under the purview of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names include natural features, unincorporated populated places, canals, channels, reservoirs, and more.

    Description

This vector tile basemap was created for use by the Iowa DOT with layers maintained by the Cartography team within Systems Planning. This basemap is a general reference set of data that includes information about transportation features (roads, railroads, airports and structures), as well as boundary information (state, county, and municipal boundaries), and surface water features (stream and lake information). The transportation features represent both the primary system as well as the local systems and rail features. The boundaries represent political jurisdictions as well as selected public interest lands. Surface waters include stream and lake locations. Given the nature of the basemap, the sources for this data are derived from many different sources, mainly from authoritative sources from within the Department of Transportation but also from authoritative sources from without. The basemap is scheduled to be updated on a quarterly cycle and the older versions will be archived.

    Description

The bedrock geologic map portrays the current interpretation of the distribution of various bedrock stratigraphic units present at the bedrock surface. The bedrock surface is buried by unconsolidated surficial sediments (mostly Quaternary) over most of its extent, but this surface coincides with the modern land surface in areas of bedrock exposure. The map is consistent with all available data including drill records and well samples, as well as surface bedrock exposures (both natural and man-made) and shallow-to-bedrock soils units (NRCS county soils maps). Mapped stratigraphic intervals are portrayed primarily at the group level (i.e., a grouping of bedrock formations), each characterized by distinctive lithologies (rock types) summarized in the map key and associated metadata. The distribution of bedrock units was mapped to conform to the current map of bedrock topography (elevation of the bedrock surface). The structural configurations of relevant stratigraphic datums were intercepted with the bedrock topographic surface to produce the map contacts. The line style shown on the bedrock geologic map qualitatively reflects both data density and degree of certainty of individual stratigraphic contacts. Detailed line work is possible in areas of modern bedrock exposure, but more generalized line work (smooth and more sweeping forms) is portrayed in areas of sparser data control. The new bedrock map is, in part, a revised and updated compilation of seven multi-county bedrock maps prepared between 1998 and 2004 as part of Iowa's STATEMAP program (funded through U.S. Geological Survey). These maps were further supplemented with other STATEMAP bedrock compilations for portions of northeast and eastern Iowa, although much of the bedrock geology shown for northeast Iowa represents new and previously unpublished information. Bedrock faults are displayed in the map as sharp linear features offsetting mapped stratigraphic units.
