COVID-19 tests, cases, and associated deaths that have been reported among Connecticut residents. All data in this report are preliminary; data for previous dates will be updated as new reports are received and data errors are corrected. Hospitalization data were collected by the Connecticut Hospital Association and reflect the number of patients currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19. Deaths reported to the either the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) or Department of Public Health (DPH) are included in the daily COVID-19 update.

Data on Connecticut deaths were obtained from the Connecticut Deaths Registry maintained by the DPH Office of Vital Records. Cause of death was determined by a death certifier (e.g., physician, APRN, medical examiner) using their best clinical judgment. Additionally, all COVID-19 deaths, including suspected or related, are required to be reported to OCME. On April 4, 2020, CT DPH and OCME released a joint memo to providers and facilities within Connecticut providing guidelines for certifying deaths due to COVID-19 that were consistent with the CDC’s guidelines and a reminder of the required reporting to OCME.25,26 As of July 1, 2021, OCME had reviewed every case reported and performed additional investigation on about one-third of reported deaths to better ascertain if COVID-19 did or did not cause or contribute to the death. Some of these investigations resulted in the OCME performing postmortem swabs for PCR testing on individuals whose deaths were suspected to be due to COVID-19, but antemortem diagnosis was unable to be made.31 The OCME issued or re-issued about 10% of COVID-19 death certificates and, when appropriate, removed COVID-19 from the death certificate. For standardization and tabulation of mortality statistics, written cause of death statements made by the certifiers on death certificates are sent to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the CDC which assigns cause of death codes according to the International Causes of Disease 10th Revision (ICD-10) classification system.25,26 COVID-19 deaths in this report are defined as those for which the death certificate has an ICD-10 code of U07.1 as either a primary (underlying) or a contributing cause of death. Starting April 4, 2022, negative rapid antigen and rapid PCR test results for SARS-CoV-2 are no longer required to be reported to the Connecticut Department of Public Health as of April 4. Negative test results from laboratory based molecular (PCR/NAAT) results are still required to be reported as are all positive test results from both molecular (PCR/NAAT) and antigen tests.

On 5/16/2022, 8,622 historical cases were included in the data. The date range for these cases were from August 2021 – April 2022.”

This public use dataset has 11 data elements reflecting COVID-19 community levels for all available counties. This dataset contains the same values used to display information available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/community-levels-county-map.html. CDC looks at the combination of three metrics — new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days, the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, and total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days — to determine the COVID-19 community level. The COVID-19 community level is determined by the higher of the new admissions and inpatient beds metrics, based on the current level of new cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days. New COVID-19 admissions and the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied represent the current potential for strain on the health system. Data on new cases acts as an early warning indicator of potential increases in health system strain in the event of a COVID-19 surge. Using these data, the COVID-19 community level is classified as low, medium , or high. COVID-19 Community Levels can help communities and individuals make decisions based on their local context and their unique needs. DPH note about change from 7-day to 14-day metrics: As of 10/15/2020, this dataset is no longer being updated. Starting on 10/15/2020, these metrics will be calculated using a 14-day average rather than a 7-day average. CT DPH has decided to shift to 14-day rates because these are more stable, particularly at the town level, as compared to 7-day rates. In addition, since the school indicators were initially published by DPH last summer, CDC has recommended 14-day rates and other states (e.g., Massachusetts) have started to implement 14-day metrics for monitoring COVID transmission as well. With respect to geography, we also have learned that many people are looking at the town-level data to inform decision making, despite emphasis on the county-level metrics in the published addenda. This is understandable as there has been variation within counties in COVID-19 activity (for example, rates that are higher in one town than in most other towns in the county). This dataset includes a weekly count and weekly rate per 100,000 population for COVID-19 cases, a weekly count of COVID-19 PCR diagnostic tests, and a weekly percent positivity rate for tests among people living in community settings. Dates are based on date of specimen collection (cases and positivity). A person is considered a new case only upon their first COVID-19 testing result because a case is defined as an instance or bout of illness. If they are tested again subsequently and are still positive, it still counts toward the test positivity metric but they are not considered another case. These case and test counts do not include cases or tests among people residing in congregate settings, such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or correctional facilities. These data are updated weekly; the previous week period for each dataset is the previous Sunday-Saturday, known as an MMWR week (https://wwwn.cdc.gov/nndss/document/MMWR_week_overview.pdf). The date listed is the date the dataset was last updated and corresponds to a reporting period of the previous MMWR week. For instance, the data for 8/20/2020 corresponds to a reporting period of 8/9/2020-8/15/2020. The following data show the number of COVID-19 cases and associated deaths per 100,000 population by race and ethnicity. Crude rates represent the total cases or deaths per 100,000 people. Age-adjusted rates consider the age of the person at diagnosis or death when estimating the rate and use a standardized population to provide a fair comparison between population groups with different age distributions. Age-adjustment is important in Connecticut as the median age of among the non-Hispanic white population is 47 years, whereas it is 34 years among non-Hispanic blacks, and 29 years among Hispanics. Because most non-Hispanic white residents who died were over 75 years of age, the age-adjusted rates are lower than the unadjusted rates. In contrast, Hispanic residents who died tend to be younger than 75 years of age which results in higher age-adjusted rates.

The population data used to calculate rates is based on the CT DPH population statistics for 2019, which is available online here: https://portal.ct.gov/DPH/Health-Information-Systems--Reporting/Population/Population-Statistics. Prior to 5/10/2021, the population estimates from 2018 were used.

Rates are standardized to the 2000 US Millions Standard population (data available here: https://seer.cancer.gov/stdpopulations/). Standardization was done using 19 age groups (0, 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, ..., 80-84, 85 years and older). Categories are mutually exclusive. The category “multiracial” includes people who answered ‘yes’ to more than one race category. Counts of COVID-19 Cases in CT Schools by County As of 6/24/2021, COVID-19 school-based surveillance activities for the 2020 – 2021 academic year has ended. The Connecticut Department of Public Health along with the Connecticut State Department of Education are planning to resume these activities at the start of the 2021 – 2022 academic year.

This report summarizes data on COVID-19 cases and COVID-19 associated deaths by race/ethnicity for the state of Connecticut and the 10 largest Connecticut towns. Data on race/ethnicity are missing on almost half (47%) of reported COVID-19 cases. CT DPH has urged healthcare providers and laboratories to complete information on race/ethnicity for all COVID-19 cases. All data in this report are preliminary; data will be updated as new COVID-19 case reports are received and data errors are corrected. Data on COVID-19 cases and COVID-19-associated deaths were last updated on April 20, 2020 at 3 PM. Information about the race/ethnicity of COVID-19-associated deaths also are collected by the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and shared with DPH. Race/ethnicity categories used in this report are mutually exclusive. People answering ‘yes’ to more than one race category are counted as ‘other’.

***This COVID-19 dataset consists of Non-COVID and COVID cases of both X-ray and CT images. The associated dataset is augmented with different augmentation techniques to generate about 17099 X-ray and CT images. The dataset contains two main folders, one for the X-ray images, which includes two separate sub-folders of 5500 Non-COVID images and 4044 COVID images. The other folder contains the CT images. It includes two separate sub-folders of 2628 Non-COVID images and 5427 COVID images.

The dataset includes COVID-19 tests, cases, and associated deaths that have been reported among Connecticut residents by age groups

As of 6/1/2023, this data set is no longer being updated. Connecticut nursing homes are required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to report on the impact of COVID-19 on their residents and staff through CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This reporting is intended to reflect recent COVID-19 activity in nursing homes. Data presented here from NHSN reflect resident and staff COVID-19 cases and COVID-related deaths reported for Connecticut nursing homes for the previous week, Thursday–Wednesday. All nursing homes follow NHSN definitions and instructions when reporting to the NHSN COVID-19 module, ensuring data are reported in a systematic way. These data do not show where the resident or staff got infected. This dataset provides the number of weekly COVID-19 cases for staff and students in CT public and private PK-12 schools. As of 6/24/2021, COVID-19 school-based surveillance activities for the 2020 – 2021 academic year has ended. The Connecticut Department of Public Health along with the Connecticut State Department of Education are planning to resume these activities at the start of the 2021 – 2022 academic year. Laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 that have been reported among Connecticut residents, broken out by age group. All data in this report are preliminary; data for previous dates will be updated as new reports are received and data errors are corrected. Hospitalization data were collected by the Connecticut Hospital Association. Deaths reported to the either the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) or Department of Public Health (DPH) are included in the daily COVID-19 update.

All data in this report are preliminary; data for previous dates will be updated as new reports are received and data errors are corrected. Since February 2021, cases of COVID-19 among fully vaccinated persons (e.g., vaccine breakthrough cases) were identified based on a medical provider report to DPH identifying such cases. Recently, DPH developed a process that matches COVID-19 case data with the vaccine registry to determine which cases meet the definition of being fully vaccinated and are also vaccine breakthrough cases. A case of COVID-19 in a fully vaccinated person (e.g., vaccine breakthrough case) is defined as a person who has a positive PCR/NAAT or antigen test in a respiratory specimen collected ≥14 days after completing the final dose of an FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine series and who did not have a previously positive COVID-19 test <45 days prior to the positive test currently under investigation. This newer process provides more accurate and complete data on the vaccine status of persons who have tested positive for COVID-19.
